  1. Milt Jackson 'Second Nature' (Savoy/Arista) the 1956 sessions with Lucky Thompson
  2. You should not fail to explore more of the early Andrew Hill Blue Notes Smokestack, Judgment!, Compulsion to really absorb the width of Hill's musicianship. Don't forget to check his Arista/Freedom volumes Spiral and Live at Montreux if you can find them! They're worth the search!
  3. The full content of the Lucky Thompson-Milt Jackson Savoy 1956 reunions came out on the Savoy/Arista LP two-fer 'Milt Jackson Second Nature', with excellent notes by Doug Ramsey If not Mosaic, wish Savoy which reissued a number of their best dates on CD with additional material (any alternates available on those Bags/Lucky?) would have taken care of these outstanding sessions.
  4. My only complaint with Venus Records is that there are pretty expensive to purchase. Those I have acquired are honey to my ears! And the covers are honey to my eyes! Most of them at least! The Venus website!
  5. From the Boston Globe. There should be several interesting items in that donation!
  6. Chet Baker in Paris 'The Complete 1955-1956 Paris Sessions' (Barclay, discs 3 and 4)
  7. Don't think the cover had anything to do with BN design. It was typical of Don Schlitten design. He took the photo and designed the cover. Like quite a number of Prestige releases/reissues in the late 60s/early '70s. That KD Prestige reissue added one track (Mack the Knife) to the original New Jazz LP.
  8. This was the cover of the original Savoy LP release Never saw that vinyl!
  9. Keno Duke/Contemporaries 'Sense of Values' (Strata-East) with George Coleman, Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern and Lisle Atkinson
  10. The best Lady Day biography I know 'Wishing on the Moon' by Donald Clark does not refer to a specific incident. Clark mentions: 'In early 1951, Lady met Lester Young in Philadelphia, and thereafter did not see him for three years, as she wallowed in drugs and he withdrew in alcohol, each seeking release from several kinds of pain.'. As for the Newport 1954 reunion, Lester Young 'had refused to play with her. Gerry Mulligan did and that made Lester mad. According to Donald Clark: Down Beat magazine hinted that Mulligan's baritone sax had stung Lester into taking his rightful place: 'He shuffled on stage and once again was part of a Billie presentation. They later embraced in the dressing room and the feud was over''.
  11. Happy  Birthday  , Conrad!
  12. I did not say I would not buy an iPad. I said I was not sure I would consider buying one. I may change my mind (or not) when I have a chance to check one when it becomes available to the general public. And check all its possibilities with my head in the clouds (or not!). Even with its shortcomings, I am pretty happy right now with my iPhone
  13. is there an explanation somewhere on why Norman Granz never had Billie Holiday and Lester Young together - a natural combination - in a recording studio, specially after their 'reconciliation' at the Newport 1954 festival? Both were signed to the label (Lady Day until 1957). Granz had marvelous saxophonists including Benny Carter, Willie Smith, Flip Phillips, Ben Webster, Budd Johnson, Paul Quinichette on those sessions but no Prez! An oversight?
  14. Benny Carter 'Additions to Further Definitions' (Impulse, mono)
  15. I failed to get really excited about the launching of the iPad. Not sure I'll be looking for to purchase the new gadget... From The New York Times
  16. The Billie Holiday Verve box. Making my way through the sessions with Ben Webster!
  17. Ha ! Have got that one - Remember reading somewhere that the photo was shot in the back room of Dobell's Record Shop? If so, Sandy must have frozen his nuts off Mon Dieu! Did not realize - was I too young or too naive? - there were such things going on at Dobell's. Was this at the Charing Cross adress?
  18. Cookin' and Relaxin'] originals carried the 5Oth Street adress. Workin' and Steamin' had the Bergenfield adress. All yellow labels.
  19. Willie 'The Lion' Smith/Jo 'The Tiger' Jones 'The Lion and the Tiger' (Jazz Odyssey)
