  1. Happy Birthday Barak Wishing you all the best
  2. Clifford, I met Marion Brown in the fall of 1965 and he had not recorded a session under his name yet. For personal reasons, I can say that the November 1965 recording date is a no contest affirmation!
  3. Chris, enjoy the trip! Hope you'll like your future destination!
  4. Phil Schaap has questioned this date. According to his notes in the Bird box this session was no earlier than the last week of August 1950. Rosco, was aware of the controversy. The Lord - and other books - stick to the July 5 date. The Bregman/Bukowski/Saks Charlie Parker Discography list the session as 'Late summer 1950'. I just thought that any session that produced such masterpieces as 'Laura', 'East of the Sun', 'I'm In the Mood for Love', etc... should not be left out of this thread... After all this is not the Bible! Thank the Lord
  5. Very interesting and useful new website on the net that enables jazz and film fans to search David Meeker's filmography Jazz on the Screen
  6. 7. Chuck Nessa already recommended the Black Lion releases. Would like to add a Storyville CD 'Don Byas Quartet Feazturing Sir Charles Thompson', a 1967 live date where Byas demonstrates why he was considered a superb technician. The lyrical side of Byas is also on display on the Jazz in Paris CDs under his name, 'Laura' and 'En Ce Temps-La'
  8. Late also reported having the same problem!
  9. Since he was one of the studio musicians in constant demand, I'm sure he took part in a number of dreadful sessions (non-jazz). I'm also sure that he was giving his best at each and every session... I'm ready to bet he took part in more sessions than Ron Carter! Michelot was already a veteran at the time Carter got his start.

I have pulled my copy out too. Will be spinning it tomorrow. Trust the music has aged well... Also: I'm sure you will have plenty to teach those funny rats
  11. Bud Powell 'Inedits 62' (Y) with Pierre Michelot on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums, recorded at the Blue Note in Paris
  12. Great gift! This is a superb machine Kept mine for years. It's gone now . All I have left is a couple of dozen of those large tape reels with lot of mostly classical music (no jazz) that I recorded several decades ago!
  13. Terribly sad news! Michelot was so much part of the Parisian jazz scene and was one of the most reliable musician around. Heard him so many times when he was in the house band at the Club Saint-Germain and at the Blue Note here! One of the very best bass player!

Gaslini has been on the experimental side of the European jazz scene since he started making records back in 1948! One of Gaslini's best albums is 'Nuovi Sentimenti' (New Feelings) suite he recorded in 1966. Musicians taking part in the sessions were Don Cherry, Enrico Rava, Steve Lacy, Gianni Bedori, Gato Barbieri, JF Jenny-Clark, Ken Carter, Franco Tonani and Al (sic!) Romano! An album that should be reissued!
  15. You mean: Off with their President's head!!! I'll have freedom fries on that
  16. Thanks Rosco and Jazztrain for trying to clarify! July 4 seemed like a perfect day for an encounter of this (Monk/Russell) type!
  17. July 4 seems to be the correct date for that Newport Monk/Russell encounter. Concert was held in late afternoon. The Lord says July 4 too. I have also seen that July 3 date but this does not look accurate!
  18. 19. Oui... and it was the same gig, indeed! That image was not flipped The other shot of Marion Brown was taken in front of a giant advertisement poster!
  20. Top Brass Featuring Five Trumpets (Savoy mono) The trumpet players are Joe Wilder, Ernie Royal, Ray Copeland, Idrees Sulieman and Donald Byrd:
  21. Have a great day!
  22. That Cimarron track was being played pretty often after its original release by Wills Conover in his VOA broadcasts. It turned me on to the arranging skills of Johnny Richards. I have the albums that are in the Select and will not purchase it. But I love the music and spin the vinyls pretty often too nowadays!
  23. What you really mean is that I should save my money for the next Uptown/Nessa releases... Right?
  24. At the time of the Coltrane 1965 appearance, all the concerts at the Antibes-Juan les Pins jazz festival were preserved on video. Well-known director Jean-Christophe Averty had a crew on hand at each festival. Unfortunately the film from the 'Love Supreme' concert seems to be missing!
  25. Marty, this was actually a Harold Land Quintet date which was released on the Imperial label, not PJ. July 3: 1941 - Rex Stewart (Lawrence Brown, Ben Webster, Harry Carney, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Blanton, Sonny Greer) record session for Victor ('Subtle Slough', 'Poor Bubber', etc...) 1941 - Johnny Hodges (Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Harry Carney, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Blanton, Sonny Greer) record session for Victor ('Passion Flower', 'Squatty Roo', 'Things Ain't What They Used to Be', etc...) 1957 - Herbie Mann (Jack Sheldon, Jimmy Rowles, Buddy Clark, Mel Lewis) record session for Riverside (Great ideas of Western Mann) 1957 - Woody Herman and his Orchestra (Bill Berry, Bill Harris, Jay Migliori, etc...) record session for Verve (Woody Herman '58) 1957 - Jimmy Smith Trio (Eddie McFadden, Donald Bailey) record session for BN (Cheerokee) 1958 - Dave Brubeck Quartet (Paul Desmond, Joe Benjamin, Joe Morello) at Newport Jazz Festival, released on Columbia (Newport '58) 1961 - Stan Getz Quartet (Steve Kuhn, Scott LaFaro, Roy Haynes) at Newport Jazz Festival, released on Raretone 1972 - Newport All Stars (Harry Edison, Kai Winding, James Moody, Dexter Gordon, Zoot Sims, Flip Philips, Roland Kirk, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, etc...) at Newport jazz festival, released on Cobblestone (Newport in New York) 1985 - Paris Reunion Band (Dizzy Reece, Woody Shaw, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Nathan Davis, Kenny Drew, Jimmy Woode, Billy Brook) record session for Sonet (French Cooking)
