The label was Swing (founded by Charles Delauney). Django and Grappelli recorded together once more before the start of WWII. For Decca in London on August 25, 1939. When the War broke out, Grappelli chose to remain in England while Django travelled back to France!

Lee Konitz was interested in scientology at some point but was wise enough to opt out quite a long time ago! -
Have only a single Bear so far! Won't be the last one! It's 'Blowing the Fuse - 27 r&b Classics That Rocked the Jukebox in 1949'. Was testing the waters with that CD and love it! Lovingly produced compilation of classics by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sticks McGee, Ruth Brown, Wynonie Harris, Dinah Washington, etc...

Dan, no. The CD I have does look like an original issue. As EKE BBB posted earlier, the session is included in The Lord! What I find interesting - beside the music being highly enjoyable - is the fact that it's a Norman Granz-produced date! And that its existence is nowhere to be seen on the Internet... Can't recall seeing the fact that in the last years of his life Granz produced music outside of his Pablo label ever mentioned! And, once more, thanks Michael for the research!

Picked up 'How Long, How Long Blues' by Harry ''Edison'' Six (that's how it's spelled on the digipack and the disc) on the Village label. Session recorded in LA on March 11th & 12th, 1991. Lineup is 'Sweets' and Snooky Young on trumpet, Curtis Peagler on alto, Mike Wofford on piano, Keter Betts on bass, Bobby Durham on drums. This was produced by Norman Granz who also wrote the liner notes (dated Nov. 1992). A very enjoyable date. I had never heard of that label and of Granz producing sessions outside of Pablo in his later years. A google for details on albums from the Village label did not produce anything. Anybody has details on other CDs from the label? The copy I have was made in Germany and comes from the ZYX people.

Michel Legrand -- Le Cinema De Michel Legrand
brownie replied to a topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No idea if this one is good. But Michel Legrand is a clever and inspired arranger/composer. Jazz content on this anthology should be nil but there is bound to be good easylistening music. Thought highly of his score for Agnes Varda's 'Cleo de 5 a 7' where he appeared on screen and was shown composing and playing piano! Trust you have 'Legrand Jazz'! Essential! -

Was not aware of that Aldo Romano album. Never saw it. Good track on the BFT with Franco d'Andrea in brilliant mood! On a related subject: pulled out the La Banda double CD when I was listening to the BFT in the hope of getting one more track identified. Bad luck. But enjoyed relistening to the album. Highly recommended. Love those Italian musicians!

Sound on that Jazz Galore LP volume 1 is no good. Very thin, no dynamics which is a shame for that type of music. Hope that torrent material sounds better! Never saw a volume 2 from Jazz Galore...

Caught the 'Why We Fight' series a few years ago. Thought it was effective as wartime propaganda. Which is why it was produced. You can watch the series if you keep this in mind! Much better was the 'World at War' series. The best WWII overview I have seen so far! Carefully researched and impeccably documented! -

The jazz sections at the FNAC Montparnasse on the Rue de Rennes and at FNAC Ternes are the best ones with some interesting finds to be discovered if you search carefully. The jazz section at the FNAC Opera has been downsized recently. Nearly nothing left of the poems bin. But they still have the New Age section along (same as at Virgin Champs-Elysees). A shame!
