That's John Dennis, of course! Not Kenny the drummer...

This was originally released on BN, the BN Classic vinyls, in 1980. With liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. Got my own...

This is the New York Times story on the W. Eugene Smith documentation for people who would shy away from subscribing (yes, it's free!) Several of the Loft photos that W. Eugene Smith took at the time were displayed at a Smith retrospective in Paris a few years ago. Incredible stuff! Some people (I'm one of them) consider Smith one of the very best - if not THE best - photographer ever. I have been an admirer of his work ever since I became interested in photography. Smith was present when Albert Ayler recorded the 'Spirits Rejoice' album for ESP in 1965. None of the photos he took that day has showed up yet! I was there too, a very novice amateur photographer. Went up to him to tell him how much I admired his work. Something I rarely do. Smith could not be more welcoming and helpful.

Paris Jazz Festival (France, not Texas)
brownie replied to bertrand's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
The Paris Jazz Festival is held at the Parc Floral de Vincennes. Some details: http://www.whatsontheplanet.com/wow/ptnr/h...&event_id=48485 The other festival that is held in the heart of Paris usually takes place outside or inside the beautiful palaces of the Marais district. Usually pretty convivial. -

In that case, you might try your luck next June 21 when the whole city celebrates music on the annual Fete de la Musique where wouldbe, amateur and professional musicians invade the streets of Paris. There is music at every street corner and squares that day (mostly in the evening). -
A documentary on the late musician and photographer Milt Hinton will be featured on PBS next month. From Playbill:

I remember hearing that band augmented by Eddie Gale and Alan Silva in early '66 (Pittsburgh, PA)... I was allowed to attend rehearsals of that Unit (with Alan Silva on bass, not Grimes) for a full three weeks when they traveled to Paris in 1966. I had a daily concert of my own!

Dizzy, the Paris Jazz festival usually runs every weekends from mid June to late July. That's happening at the Parc Floral in Vincennes, just outside (East) Paris. Then there is another festival going on in the heart of Paris in July. No idea yet on who is lined up for these! -

Not a live date. Even if the session was to get the mood of a live date, this was recorded at Nola Penthouse Sound studio in New York.

Very sad to hear this. He was an excellent musician!

C'mon brownie, why didn't you tell me last year ?!?! Mike, I didn't tell you because you were in Paris in the summer (like couw). Berthillon is closed in the summer. The link to the shop does not say but the place closes on each school holidays and there are a number of holidays here! The shop has been a family affair since grandpa Berthillon's days and the whole family leaves its Paris island residency whenever there is a school holiday! As for Dizzyspell's concern about the place being an obesity joint, if you stick to sherbets you're safe. And those sherbets are deeelicioooous!

Love them all! Or almost. Voted for 'Music of my Mind' which was full of great songs and which is so often overlooked! Been a fan of SW back when he was still Little! 'I Was Made to Love Her' is a very old favorite! Have not listened to Stevie for quite some time. Will be spinning a couple of albums later...

Jean-Philippe Allard is one of the top producers at Universal/Polygram France. He works with Daniel Richard, another top producer. Don't know Allard personally but I used to know Daniel Richard, one of the most knowledgeable person in the jazz producing field! Have also heard good things about Allard whose record (if I may say so) speak for itself

wow! I have two of them on CD (missing the Ellington, if memory serves right). Why are all these great Weston French Universal discs OOP, so much great music there, "Marrakesh...", "Saga" (the only one not OOP, I think), than the beautiful disc with Teddy Edwards... Do the albums included all the tracks the CDs have? Running 50+ minutes? ubu Ubu, yes the three vinyls have everything that was on the CDs! By the way those Polydor/Verve vinyl issues were pressed in Holland!

Randy Weston: - Portraits of Duke Ellington - Portraits of Thelonious Monk - Self Portraits all three vinyls in perfect condition for the price of a single CD!

I have been several times to Tel Aviv. Hope you're not offended if I tell you I'ld rather stay in Paris! But your sun will be very accepted over here. It's still a grey day. I do miss the sun!

Ice cream. I live within walking distance of the best place for ice creams in Paris. http://www.free-definition.com/Berthillon.html And Paris is the center of the world for good ice creams
