  1. Wish I could attend that one! From the Beirut Daily Star:
  2. yeah, but you told me to leave the stoopid music out... That means the end of the Party hey you radical! whatever happened to your openmindedness?! (It's time someone started a brawl at this party to spice things up, this is all way too tame*) (* probably folks have been using Marty's illegal substances and are now all disinterested or chasing butterflies that only exist in their heads. Either that or they got on a "food-kick" and are putting down peanutbutter pure by the spoonload) I may be liberal about a lot of things but when it comes no music, my policy is Take No Quarter. That goes for several types of music. Stoopid music included :rsmile:

  4. One absolutely essential Teddy Wilson album is the 'Pres And Teddy' session with Lester Young!
  5. stoopid music???
  6. Not sure this does not belong in the Politics Forum...
  7. I always thought this Board was The Party
  8. Weizen, confirm that these are Venus LP releases. I have seen these at the Paris Virgin store at €33 and some each (around $40).

    Albert Ayler

Indeed, wish he was still around... The photo of Ayler in uniform was taken one year before he and I both took part in the Bastille Day parade on the Champs-Elysees avenue on July 14, 1960. When I met Ayler in New Yorfk in 1965 he recalled that parade. I could not remember a US regiment taking part in the parade but his memory must have been better than mine. There were still a number of US Army regiments stationed throughout France. All I remember about that parade was that our infantry regiment had to be ready in the middle of the night and we had to wait for hours on end before marching down the Champs-Elysees. Luckily none of us marchers made fools of ourselves when we went past the presidential tribune with General de Gaulle at its center. To celebrate that historic march I will go to the Bastille Day reception at the Elysee Palace tomorrow and will play some of Ayler's tunes in my head - including the Marseillaise part of 'Spirits Rejoice'. It will be better than the music that is played at these outdoor receptions. As a distinguished member of the French media, I have been attending many of those for the past two decades. The music is usually provided by the band from the Garde Republicaine and the closest these people come to jazz is a version of 'In The Mood'. Well, I'll sure miss Ayler tomorrow...
  10. Spinning a couple of Roscoe Mitchell LPs: 'Congliptious' by the RM Art Ensemble is first. Second release from the Nessa label. To be followed by the RM Quartet (with Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis and Spencer Barefield) on Sackville.
  11. Berigan, the only Quintones I am familiar with is the vocal group that recorded two sides with a small unit from the Duke Ellington band in June 1939. The unit was led by Barney Bigard and included Rex Stewart, Juan Tizol, Bigard, Harry Carney, the Duke, Fred Guy, Billy Talor and Sonny Greer. The Tom Lord discography lists also a September 1939 with a Buck Ram group that included Buck Clayton, George Koenig, Walter Page and Jo Jones. And then again a February 194O session with a group that included Buck Clayton again, Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins. Some of those tracks from that third session were included in the Chronogical Classics Benny Carter 1939-1940 disc.
  12. Forgot about the earlier posting of the Coltrane interview. Was not equipped for audio plug-in at that time. and could not listen to it then. This has been redressed in the meantime
  13. I get the same message. They're probably taking the whole thing back to the drawing board
  14. Larry, this may not be the appropriate thread but since you mention the book, I have it on pre-order from Amazon France: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/0300...6601586-1404105
  15. Never was a great fan of the old AMG but now that I have seen the new version, I already miss it. Some things don't change. Went to check Albert Ayler's file (it's Ayler's birthday today) and learned that Tommy Vig was listed as one of Ayler's followers. I must have missed something B)
  16. Christern, with all due respect, permit me to correct. Blue Mitchell's 'Smooth As The Wind' was a Riverside release. As for Judson, I have two of those albums, both by Kenny Drew (with the great Wilbur Ware on bass): 'The Harold Arlen Showcase' and 'The Harry Warren Showcase'. Both play like regular LPs, from the edge to the label.
  17. Wolff, many thanks for providing this link. Very interesting interview. I note that this was taped in 1958 and Trane mentions Wayne Shorter who had yet to make his first record appearance. I also notice that the Slought Foundation lists an upcoming 'Sun Ra Meets Napoleon' program. That should be interesting too!
  18. Never heard that one and can't remember ever running into a copy. Obviously because I gave up on the Freddie Hubbard Columbia albums after listening to the first couple ones
  19. Al Cohn 'The Natural Seven' (RCA) with Joe Newman, Frank Rehak, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson.
  20. Is THE LAST SET material that's different from TRIO? I was under the impression that TRIO contained all of the work that Twardzik had recorded for PJ as a leader. Both Twardzik Pacific Jazz LPs had the same titles except 'Just One of Those Things' was missing from PJ 1212.
  21. OK but how was the music???
  22. Opening notes of those two do it for me: Duke Jordan's JorDu Kenny Dorham's Blue Bossa
  23. Some Orrin Keepnews reminiscences and impressions of various people including Bill Grauer. Interview by Don Heckman: http://www.grammy-awards.org/features/foun...9_keepnews.aspx His take on Bill Grauer varies from what Christiern posted. I'll tend to believe Christiern once more...
  24. I guess that's the Jimmy Rowles Liberty album that will be part of the Mosaic Select. Rowles had only a couple of sides under his name out of the Pacific Jazz sessions he took part in. Always liked that 'Rare - But Well Done' LP. The copy I have is a secondhand one with a number of small scratches. Will look for that Select if this session is there. Nice versions of 'Remember Me' and 'Chloe' in the eleven tracks that made up the LP.
  25. AMAZING
