Those crazy Portuguese are invading the streets of Paris. The large Portuguese population here is on its way to invade the Champs-Elysees avenue to celebrate. They have good reasons to be happy!
-
Some of the better BN recordings come from the post-47W63rd era. I am thinking of the Eric Dolphy 'Out To Lunch' and the first Andrew Hill releases. These came with the simple New York labels. The sound of these ones (and a lot of others) from the same era is outstanding. Specially on the mono issues!

Portugal goes go the final with a 2-1 victory. Very well done! The Dutch team did not have the dynamics of the winners. Hope Portugal will face the Czech Republic team in the final. That would be one to watch!
-
Lend also an ear to the Royal Roost sides (with Kenny Dorham, Al Haig, etc...). They should be easily available and the Bird is in full flight on those!
-
A deserved 1-0 lead for Portugal at halftime. Beautiful goal by Ronaldo. Nice first half!

I'm paying attention because I have been enjoying Joe Venuti tremendously these past few years. I don't have the two you're looking for. I'm traveling the Chronogical Classics way on Venuti and happy with this!

There were some jazz records still on sale in one of the Paris shops. Nothing much really. Except they had a number of Miles Davis At Montreux boxes, selling at €99. Wish I had waited till today to buy this one. They also had a still sealed copy of the Mosaic Four Freshmen box at €79. It was at the bottom of my Mosaic Want list but I figured I could not let this one get away. It's also one of the rare recent Mosaic sets where most of the material is new to me. I'll listen to this - slowly - over the weekend!

Looking forward to enjoy the first semifinal match Portugal vs. Holland later this evening. This really should be a good one! I'm favoring the Portuguese team because they're playing on home ground but I wouldn't mind the Dutch team going into the final (against the Czech!!

This is happening a bit too often Hope the problem is going to be fixed... Anything we can do from our end? -
OK Woody Herman was not an outstanding singer but I always had a soft spot for the Columbia album 'Music For Tired Lovers' he recorded in 1954 with Errol Garner and his trio. Too bad it was not recorded in the timespan of the Mosaic Herman sides. Herman's vocalising on this one was really off but the end result was a fun album!

The sound on the Phontastic 'Mostly Miles' is just a bit harsh but very acceptable. The CBS/Sony was just a bit better but the Phontastic had those marvellous sides by the Lee Konitz trio (with Henry Grimes!) and that Horace Silver 'Tippin'. I kept it and am glad I did.

The same Dolphy-Booker Little frontline is also on Dolphy's 'Far Cry' (originally on New Jazz) with a rhythm section of Jaki Byard, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes. Then there was a replica of the Five Spot album 'Eric Dolphy & Booker Little Remembered Live At Sweet Basil' (originally on Paddle Wheel LP). This one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A3nfexqugldke with Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison replacing Little and Dolphy with the original rhythm section (Waldron, Davis, Blackwell), all playing three tunes that were originally recorded at the Five Spot date.

Not aware that there were any doubts about the Horace Silver lineup at the Newport festival. Silver introduces his musicians (Smith, Cook, Taylor and Hayes) at the end of their interpretation of 'Tippin'. By the way these Phontastic Newport albums are really fontastic!

I think this the only jazz board on which musicians are identified by their hairlines. That's why I love it here. Cheers! Deus, I work in photos all day long. You'ld be surprised at the details that are being used for various identifications

Next time you hold that album, get it. It's the music that makes the album excellent! And Marion Brown is a master saxophonist. What a shame he is so often overlooked!
-
Tend to agree about the piano solos albums not being Sun Ra's forte. There is one album I really like, not a solo but the two musicians are so compatible; 'Visions' the SteepleChase album by Walt Dickerson with Sun Ra on piano. A very good duo date.

Dmitry, it's very hard to see if the saxplayer has a goatee on your original photo. The hairline seems to point to Harriott. I stand by my first impression B)

This one does not look like it is going to be sold outside the USA. There is enough new material to warrant a purchase from Mosaic direct! I was hoping for at least an alternate take of 'Four Brothers'. I won't believe it was recorded right the first time around!

The Savoys are good but the Dials are best! Complete Bird recordings from the two labels are currently available in single boxes. Edit: Ubu beat me to the box

Double birthdays, cool! Hope you're having a great day

These were originall released on the French Trema label, a label which issued recordings made by the Europe 1 radio station. The Clarke-Boland music dates from October 1969. These albums have been reissued on various labels. They all have the same music. Some labels issue these as double CDs, others as single CDs. The music is great.

Having caught the BN fever nearly half a century ago (first purchase was The Amazing Bud Powell, vol. 1) I have a number of these early beauties. I even have a few LPs with the Lexington Avenue adress (including the Herbie Nichols Trio and the Kenny Dorham Round Mignight at Cafe Bohemia and - but that one is in less than mint condition - Lee Morgan Indeed). Among the 47W63rd favorites include Coltrane's Blue Train, Adderley's Somethin' Else and Sonny Clark's Sonny's Crib. I am still amazed at the sound coming out of these treasures.

audio of Billie Holiday talking about her life?
brownie replied to ghost of miles's topic in Artists
It's very loose and quite interesting as I remember it. She talks about the music being rehearsed and reminisces about various periods of her life.
