  1. I mean, add people who used to be in the Ellington band and you basically have it.
  2. Oh. I think I have read that one. A useful book although I think I sold it on after reading.
  3. What is the Soul Jazz book to which people are referring? Is that recommended. I'd also love a book on the Mainstream Swing side of things. Who is the author of this new one? Has he written anything else?
  4. Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey And His Inter-Reformers Band
  5. I bought my four year old some sort of toy shawm on the weekend, because I enjoy misery. The six year old picked it up this morning and started to play "you know, the song that Roscoe Mitchell played again and again in front of those people". I have no memory of telling him that story but I presume that I did last time I spun it, back when I posted this record and, of all the things, it seems to have sunk in. Not sure why the three times table isn't... All grist for the therapist in later life.
  6. Bebop or free or even swing. Basically an extended jazz quality solo, produced by puckered human lips.
  7. Are there any examples of bebop whistling solos? I mean mouth whistling, not a penny whistle or slide whistle etc. Seems like the kind of thing that Slim Gaillard or the AEC might have done. But I can't think of any examples. Specifically solos.
  8. I went to see Cannibal Corpse yesterday. They were a man down as Eric Rutan had needed to return to Florida because his house had been destroyed in the Hurricane. Terrible stuff.
  9. Nice choice from Ms TTK. I assume I saw him later that day, then. It was a great gig, maybe my favourite at Ronnie's for a while, but he was the weaker link. He definitely looked the part, and played up to it, down to the shades and the toothpick hanging out of the corner of his mouth. I missed parallel universe. I'll give that a go too.
  10. That's interesting. I've seen him live with Kahil El'Zabar and I wasn't so too impressed, but I'm happy to hear that he is moving in a more interesting direction. I'll give this a go.
  11. Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy - Sempre Amore
  12. Franck Dervieux – Dimension 'M'
  13. Anthony Braxton – Seven Compositions 1978
  14. Another Coltrane thing: No cheesecake. Not ever. And only one abstract artwork (Coltrane plays the blues).
  15. Yeah. Agreed. This one stands out as the Coltrane record with a photo on the front where they did at least try to style it. I like the strange colouring too.
  16. George Adams / Don Pullen – All That Funk
  17. Sven Hessle – Grekisk Rapsodi / Novotek
  18. I thought that too. I am not a huge fan but it seemed very on point at the time.
  19. One of my favourites, mainly due to Carter. I came around a little late for Golia, and his stuff is not easily accessible online, so I never quite got to grips with his discography and who he was. Same for other players of the era like Chapin and Erhlich.
  20. Arthur Blythe – Lenox Avenue Breakdown
  21. David Murray - Flowers for Albert
  22. Vinny Golia – Spirits In Fellowship
