Max Haymer Whirlwind: Live at Sam First Impacting October 15th, 2020 Format(s): Jazz Artist Title Time Max Haymer So in Love 06:17 Max Haymer Whirlwind 08:06 Max Haymer Proof of Evil 05:32 Max Haymer Speak Low 09:21 Max Haymer Gold Plated Dime 08:36 Max Haymer Welcoming 05:44 Max Haymer Killing Time 01:09 Max Haymer Passed Time 11:00 Max Haymer Love for Sale 06:26 Pianist and composer MAX HAYMER’s newest release as a leader, WHIRLWIND, is a testament to his muscular, inventive playing style and his gift for creating sophisticated, dramatic compositions. WHIRLWIND follows his 2008 release Pickpocket Witness, a production of all original tunes which flew under the radar. It has taken 12 years for Haymer to release this new project because he’s been so busy touring as a long-time member of Arturo Sandoval’s band as well as leading his own popular trio and acting as West Coast accompanist for singer Jane Monheit. Haymer was born and raised in Los Angeles. He began studying classical piano when he was seven years old and was introduced to jazz piano at the age of 14. He studied with the renowned Los Angeles-based pianist Tamir Hendelman through high school and went on to continue his music education at UC Irvine, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree. At Irvine, Haymer studied Jazz Performance with Kei Akagi, who is perhaps best known for his work as a member of the Miles Davis band in the late 1980's. Haymer says, ”Kei was an important influence on both my playing and composing. He used to say that the best melodies are the ones that fight gravity. It’s an image that has stuck with me through the years.” Haymer also studied with top Los Angeles musicians Darek Oles, Bobby Rodriguez, and the late Sherman Ferguson. Haymer won 2nd place honors at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition and the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, Florida. He was also a finalist in the Horace Silver Piano Competition and UWF Phillips Jazz Piano Competition. He has worked on both coasts playing with the likes of Mike Stern, Cindy Blackman Santana, Joel Frahm, Denise Donatelli, Gregory Hutchinson, Brian Lynch, Bill Holman, Sara Gazarek, among countless others. Haymer is an athlete and attended UC Irvine on a soccer scholarship, where he spent four years playing Division 1 soccer. His approach to the piano reflects his athleticism. “I find that the physical act of playing the piano has a lot in common with sports,” says Haymer. “They both require stamina, and you have to physically train to perform at your fullest potential. They both also require your composure under pressure while being fully aware of what your teammates or bandmates are doing as well.” While Haymer’s approach to playing the piano embodies his innate physicality, his aesthetics have been largely influenced by his years with Arturo Sandoval. Haymer has been part of the band since 2014, when he got a call from a friend while Haymer was at the gym. His friend told him that Sandoval’s piano player ditched a rehearsal, and if he wanted the gig, he should come immediately. Haymer rushed to the rehearsal, still in his workout clothes, worked through the tunes, and found himself onstage at Disney Hall the very next day. He has been with Sandoval ever since, and many of Haymer’s compositions are tinged with Latin colors. His playing can be heard on Sandoval’s score for Clint Eastwood’s motion pictures “Richard Jewell” and “The Mule.” WHIRLWIND was recorded live, before the pandemic shut down live shows, at Sam First. The club, which is just a short walk from the LA airport, is known for world-class modern and straight-ahead jazz. Haymer and his trio have performed there many times over the years, and he thought it was the perfect place to capture the energy of a live performance. Joining Haymer are his two longtime bandmates, bass player DAVE ROBAIRE and drummer DAN SCHNELLE. Robaire has played with Larry Goldings, Billy Childs, Ben Wendel, and Josh Nelson. He currently tours with singer Jane Monheit. Schnelle is a first-call drummer who has worked with Billy Childs, Anthony Wilson, Larry Goldings, Alan Ferber, Sara Gazarek, Laurence Hobgood, John Daversa, Larry Koonse, David Benoit, Karrin Allyson and many more. WHIRLWIND is a high energy album that befits its title. The album comprises six original tunes by Haymer and three standards. Haymer opens and closes the album with two Cole Porter tunes, “So in Love” and “Love for Sale.” Haymer felt “So in Love” lends itself to a Latin jazz feel, and his years with Sandoval can be heard especially towards the middle of the tune, where he injects a mambo break. “Love for Sale” is a compelling barnburner with which Haymer often closes his sets. “Speak Low,” the Kurt Weill standard, is a bolero with the slowest tempo of any tune on the album, but has a contained energy, like a tightly coiled spring that Haymer and the band slowly release in an exothermic process. Haymer’s original compositions include the album’s title “Whirlwind,” a jazz waltz. Haymer came up with the name because he said the triplet meter reminded him of a “whimsical tornado.” The title “Proof of Evil” is a mashup of Herbie Hancock’s “Actual Proof” and Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil,” and tidbits of both can be heard in this composition. Haymer had in mind the podcast called Serial when he wrote “Gold Plated Dime.” The podcast features a tragic nonfiction story over multiple episodes, where the protagonist tried to pawn off gold plated dimes as real gold. “Welcoming” is about the birth of his first daughter and the dreamy feeling of love he experienced when he woke for her 3:45 am feeding. “Killing Time” is the prelude to “Passed Time,” tunes which he composed in his hotel room while on a tour with Sandoval. He wrote them when they had a couple of days off but were in the middle of nowhere with not much to do. For Haymer, music is a dramatic art, where conflict and passion are expressed in a narrative framework. WHIRLWIND is a series of stories brought to life by three A-list musicians. Take it from Jackie Myers; there’s nothing quite like the warmth of a crowd. The vocalist, pianist, and musical director of nationally syndicated NPR program 12th Street Jump has the hard evidence of two live jazz albums made in the venues of her adopted home of Kansas City with her instrumental outfit The Myers Swingset and the recently released Clementine under her own name. Recorded at Black Dolphin, Clementine features a sweet crop of accompanists ranging from the Grammy nominated to local legends and the added bonus of Myers’ soulful and earthy vocals front and center. Leaping right to it, album opener “I Get High” is a pick-me-up piece that puts everything into place from the first crack of the snare. Myers may sing that the “blues don’t stick out anymore,” but the colorful horns of Trent Austin on trumpet and Brad Gregory on saxophone sure do. The solid slow jam “The Sentence” offers a signature mixture of Myers’ soul, jazz and modern R&B influences. Performed with beautiful balance, singing and soloing talent are not exclusive when she makes the segue on her piano midway through the song, followed by a few mesmerizing measures from guitarist Rod Fleeman. Originally written as lyrics for a composition by collaborator Matt Hopper, Myers repurposed “Wait” into the bluesy build up heard here on Clementine. “There are several songs on this album that I would consider making a studio version of,” says Myers. “However with this tune, even if I were to do take after take and make it absolutely spotless and studio quality - I don't think I would necessarily create a better version in my eyes, or should I say ears? There's a feeling and beauty to this recording that I'm very happy with.” Pairing a pet name with some swing, the title track is framed as a phone call from the road while Austin and Gregory aid in the convincing appeal of the chorus to “get it right.” In this case, the conversation is one-sided apart from keys, trumpet and the fluttering notes of Fleeman’s guitar. Although clocking in as the shortest song on the album, “I’ve Got A Plan” is full of pep and purpose. Hitting a higher register in the chorus, Myers’ ambition must have been emboldened by the evening and the magic of making a live record. On “Girl Next Door” major credit is given to the rhythm section of Ben Tervort on bass and Todd Strait on drums. That starting snapping beat just as quickly crosses an equator of sound and then right back again - a true trip of a tune. “Take The Time” combines sway and soul into a drifting ballad. Myers draws comparisons to Carole King, with Austin and Gregory sweeping in to add some spice to the sentimentality. Perhaps humorously, the band save “The Worst Part” for the end. All jokes aside, the choice closes out the night on an upbeat number about carrying on and serves as a supreme send-off. Clementine was made possible with help from audio engineer Ethan Erisman. Mixing and mastering was completed in Austin, Texas by Charlie Kramsky and Nick Landis. “Jackie Myers becomes even more remarkable the longer she is here. Her new live album, Clementine, charts and celebrates some of that progression. It’s an engaging—even fun—album. (If I were you, I’d get it.)” - Kevin Rabas, JAM Magazine “The intersection of the singer-songwriter style and Kansas City jazz may be unconventional, but Myers’ eclecticism makes Clementine her most convincing and outright enjoyable album.” - Bill Brownlee, Plastic Sax

In duo, trio, and quintet formation, Rachel performs classics from the Brazilian popular music repertoire. Rosa Passos describes Rachel’s voice as having a “beautiful timbre”. She goes on to say [Rachel’s] vibrato, is used with discretion and at the right moment, without too much exaggeration.” Rachel’s vocal style has also been described as “soaring and silky,” “intense,” “vivacious,” and “dramatic.” Brazz (2020) is Rachel’s third worldly jazz CD. Standard Media’s Chris Saracino calls the album “top-shelf material.” “This is more than just a CD to me. It is the culmination of a journey. I wrote a PhD thesis on Brazilian music. People think you can either make music, or study it. But studying it made me a better musician. I didn’t work on myself in order to do the PhD. I did the PhD to find myself and my music.” says Rachel. “It was so much fun to record Carmen Miranda’s Tico Tico no fubá. Initially arranged for our live shows, it quickly became an audience favourite, so we recorded it. It is fun to play and sing all the leaps in such a fast tempo.” Garry Elliott (guitar) and Rachel perform Antonio Carlos Jobim and Chico Buarque’s “Portrait in White and Black” as a duo. Percussionist Liz Hanson joins them to form a trio on 4 tracks. The remaining 5 songs are performed by Sol da capital, Rachel’s Brazilian jazz group. It includes Angel Araos (percussion), Jasmin Lalande (woodwinds), Sílvio Módolo (electric bass), and Evandro Gracelli (guitars). Brazz was primarily recorded in Ontario at Morning Anthem Studios, by Normand Glaude. Normand did all the mixing and mastering, including the addition of Gracelli’s parts, that were recorded in São Paulo, Brazil. Rachel has two previous worldly jazz albums. Close to My Heart (2002), features veteran Canadian guitarist-composer Roddy Ellias. The Dawning (2009), features Ottawa pianist Yves Laroche and bassist Tom Posner, who is now based in Paris. Rachel is also featured as a conductor and vocalist on Elise Letourneau’s Requiem for Fourteen Roses (2014). Rachel Beausoleil is a French-Canadian worldly jazz chanteuse. She is known for her love of languages, world musics, and her on-stage drama flair. She performs in 6 different languages. Since the late 1980s, Rachel has been part of many vocal groups, jazz and Latin combos, and has performed in both North and South America. Grammy-nominated guitarist Will Bernard knows a thing or ten about holding down the groove with a community of instrumentalists who’ve defined the improv scene of New York City. Bernard’s new album Freelance Subversives shows a dedication to multidimensional and introspective compositions with deep pocket-rhythms at their foundations. Freelance Subversives takes its cue from the album’s title with Bernard’s unflinching adeptness on his six-string that disrupts conventional standards of jazz guitar. Freelance Subversives returns Bernard’s sound to a full band repertoire similar to his Grammy-nominated album Party Hats (2007), which was released on the cusp of the Berkeley, Calif. native’s move to New York City. New York proved to be a welcome change that saw musical opportunities proliferate. Prior to the covid-19 pandemic slamming New York City, Bernard had Freelance Subversives mixed and ready to be released. He had just performed at Winter Jazz Fest (NYC) with Revelator featuring Bill Laswell, Peter Apfelbaum, and Aaron Johnston, and in late 2019 he performed his debut residency at John Zorn’s series at The Stone. He was set with more than a dozen spring concerts surrounding the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, as well as a summer West Coast tour booked to promote Freelance Subversives. Plus, John Medeski’s Mad Skillet with Will and members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band were set to tour and record their second album. But of course, the shows and recording sessions were all cancelled. Special guests on Freelance Subversives include an inimitable horn section of saxophonists Skerik (Garage A Trois, Critters Buggin’) and Jay Rodriguez (Groove Collective, Mark Ribot). John Medeski’s masterful work on organ and Wurlitzer is a natural extension of his collaboration with Bernard for Mad Skillet. The deft rhythm section is comprised of drummer Eric Kalb (Sharon Jones, John Scofield), percussionist Moses Patrou (Amy Helm), keyboardists Eric Finland (Eric Krasno) and Ben Stivers (Lyle Lovett), and bassists Ben Zwerin (Angelique Kidjo) and Jeff Hanley (Morgan James). Along with thousands of other NYC-based artists, Will Bernard keeps his head held high knowing that the power of music prevails and artists will again perform in music venues & festivals. His acclaimed career of collaborating with a Who’s Who of the jazz world and beyond with artists like John Medeski, Stanton Moore, Dr. John, Ben Sidran, Tom Waits, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Greyboy Allstars, Charlie Hunter, Peter Apfelbaum, Steven Bernstein, Bill Laswell, Groundation, and Bernard Purdie will eventually continue. Until then, Will Bernard lends an uplifting soundtrack for us to get down to while staying safe & healthy. www.WillBernard.com Attachments WillBernar..

Today I finished Don Maynard's autobiography, You Can't Catch Sunshine. AFL fans will enjoy it. Maynard claims to have coined the term "wide receiver" in 1958. He also introduced the v-neck jersey and the mesh jersey to pro football. He was a kick returner for the Giants in 1958. His offensive co-ordinator was Vince Lombardi. Lombardi's replacement in '59 Allie Sherman cut Maynard, and he joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Lombardi had left the Giants to coach Green Bay. He called Maynard to tell him that he had obtained his rights from the Giants, but Maynard turned him down, telling him that he was enjoying playing for the Ticats. https://www.amazon.com/You-Cant-Catch-Sunshine-Maynard/dp/1600783759/

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

New Podcast Tells Story of Thelonious Monk’s 1968 Visit to Palo Alto featuring, T.S. Monk, Danny Scher, and Grandmixer DXT. Verve Presents: Monk Goes To School Verve/Impulse! Records and podcast creative studio PopCult are pleased to announce Verve Presents: Monk Goes To School, an innovative podcast that tells the story of Thelonious Monk’s storied visit, concert, and subsequent recording at Palo Alto High School in 1968. The Podcast is available on all major platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora, and more. Listen to the podcast HERE. The album Palo Alto was released on September 18 and is available here: https://theloniousmonk.lnk.to/paloaltoPR In the fall of 1968, a sixteen-year old high school student named Danny Scher had a dream to invite legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk and his all-star quartet to perform a concert at his local high school in Palo Alto, CA. In a series of twists and turns, against a backdrop of racial tension and political volatility, that concert was recorded by the school’s janitor and finally released in 2020. Verve Presents: Monk Goes To School tells this story in innovative detail, interweaving the voices of Danny Scher, Thelonius Monk’s son T.S. Monk, monk biographer Robin D.G. Kelley and engineer/mixer Grandmixer DXT with narrator Anthony Valadez from KCRW. The podcast is unique in that there is no hosted interview segment – it takes the listener on an immersive journey featuring the voices of the cast, sound design and music clips from the record throughout. PopCult Founder/Creative Director Dennis Scheyer says, “Once we heard the story of how the record came to be we felt that it deserved more than the usual ‘interview-based’ portrayal. It’s the kind of show we created our company to produce, and Verve fully supported us.” Recorded entirely “at home” with high-quality microphones across the United States, this podcast deftly weaves through multiple voices, telling this story of Thelonious Monk, the unexpected concert, and of course, uses the music to illustrate this important part of musical history. EVP of Verve/Impulse! Jamie Krents says, “We’re thrilled to collaborate with PopCult on Monk Goes to School. This podcast brilliantly captures the real story of the Palo Alto recording, and puts it in historical context with brilliant narration from all the key players. Impulse! and Verve Records have such a rich history of music that we’re very excited to continue to illustrate in partnership with PopCult.” PopCult Partner, Strategy and Marketing Lars Murray says, “We were excited to help Verve establish a leadership position among labels by creating a high-quality narrative podcast that integrates their music seamlessly and tells a great story about a landmark release. Verve demonstrated that a label's access to licensed music is a huge advantage in podcasting.” Palo Alto – Thelonious Monk Ruby, My Dear Well, You Needn’t Don’t Blame Me Blue Monk Epistrophy I Love You Sweetheart of All My Dreams About Impulse!
