No one has mentioned Nat Cole yet. Steve Allen defined a jazz singer to be either one who sings jazz or one who sings in front of a jazz band. I therefore offer for your consideration that his vocals with the King Cole Trio were jazz vocals, though few Americans remember him as a jazz singer.

MILES DAVIS RUBBERBAND OF LIFE FEATURING LEDISI From The Lost 1985 Miles Davis Rubberband Sessions With Newly Recorded Vocals By Ledisi Featured On Rubberband EP Available Digitally Now In 1985, Miles Davis shocked the music world by moving from Columbia Records to Warner Bros. Records and started recording Rubberband. This album marked a radical departure for him, with funk and soul grooves, and was to include vocals by Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan. Produced by Davis, Randy Hall and Zane Giles, the line-up boasted Davis on trumpet and keyboards, keyboardists Adam Holzman, Neil Larsen and Wayne Linsey, percussionist Steve Reid, saxophonist Glen Burris, and Davis’s nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., on drums. Engineered by Reggie Dozier (brother of Lamont Dozier, part of the legendary Motown songwriting team), the Rubberband sessions took place at Ameraycan Studios in Los Angeles from October 1985 to January 1986. The album was subsequently shelved and Davis went on to record Tutu. “It was fat grooves, really funky, Miles talking. It was street and funky and dirty. We didn’t go after writing a great jazz song, Miles wanted the street thing; he wanted the chord changes he wanted to play. The basis was to take it to the street like On The Corner, it was Miles taking more chances,” said Hall. Giles added, “Miles kept saying ‘I don’t wanna do my usual stuff. I wanna do something different.’” 32 years after Rubberband was recorded, the original producers, Hall and Giles, teamed up with Davis’ nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., to finish and update the title track. In September 2017, they invited the 12-time Grammy nominee soulful singer Ledisi, appearing courtesy of Verve Label Group, to guest on vocals at the Village Studios in Los Angeles. The sessions, co-produced by Anthony "Mac Nass" Loffman and Arthur Haynes for SmashSound Syndicate, together with the original title track, were released as a 45rpm vinyl 12” EP on Record Store Day 2018, and are now available as a 5-track digital EP, including a new remix by Amerigo Gazaway. The cover artwork is a painting by Davis, courtesy of Miles Davis Properties L.L.C. For more information on Miles Davis, please visit www.milesdavis.com

It's that time of year again! It's time for the annual Grey Cup contest. Past winners have included Noj (twice), indestructible, Bright Moments, brownie, paul secor, Soulstation1, danasgoodstuff, B. Clugston, ejp626 (twice) and BFrank. Here are the rules: 1) Pick the winning team. 2) Pick the number of total points scored by both teams (aka the tiebreaker). Since approximately half of us will pick the winning team, picking the total points is necessary to win the contest. Your total points prediction must be a number which is a multiple of five (5). The winning tiebreaker will be the one closest to the correct answer. If two are equally close, the winner will be the lower pick. If two people pick the same thing, the first to make the pick will be the winner. THE PRIZE: A $17.00 Mosaic Records Gift Card. The $17.00 represents one CD of a Mosaic box set. Deadline: Sunday Nov. 25, 6:00 pm eastern ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 106th Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Calgary Stampeders face the Eastern champion Ottawa Redblacks. These two teams met two years ago, and the Redblacks won in a huge upset. This will be Ottawa's third Grey Cup game in the past four years. But that's nothing. It will be Calgary's fifth in the past seven years. Calgary's long term success has been due primarily (IMO) to their General Manager John Hufnagel. The Stampeders went undefeated in 1948. One of their players that year was one of the first great black pro football players, Woody Strode. He later became an actor with a significant role in Spartacus. This year, the Stampeders were again the best team in the league, until after they clinched a playoff spot. Their quarterback is Bo Levi Mitchell, who played for Eastern Washington U. He won the Most Outstanding Player Award two years ago, and will likely win it again Thursday night. The Ottawa Redblacks were an expansion team in 2014. They were the best Eastern team this year, but were not consistent. Their quarterback is Trevor Harris, who played his college ball at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Edmonton, which is just up the road from Calgary. Eastern fans always root for the Eastern champion, and Western fans always root for the Western champion. I fully expect the vast majority of the crowd to be cheering on the Stampeders. The game will be carried live in the US on ESPN2, starting at 6:00 pm eastern Sunday. You can listen to the game here: http://www.tsn.ca/radio (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. So you might want to plan ahead if you don't already have it.) You can study articles analyzing the upcoming game as well as articles about the season as it unfolded in the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. Good luck everyone! ***** Here's my pick: I'm going to do you a favor. I expect Calgary to win, and win big. So I'm going to go with the Redblacks. Ottawa - 50

A generous leader, Cyrille gives plenty of room to his cohorts, and all three musicians bring in compositions. In his own pieces Cyrille rarely puts the focus on the drums, preferring to play melodically and interactively, sensitive to pitch and to space - his priority today is an elliptical style in which meter is implied rather than stated. FOR A CD WITH AUTOGRAPHED BOOKLET CLICK HERE Ralph Alessi: trumpet; Florian Weber: piano; Linda May Han Oh: double bass; Nasheet Waits: drums Weber leads a strong cast through a program of compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players. The strong, grounded bass contrasts strikingly with fleet, fluid drumming, setting up new contexts for elegantly inventive trumpet and creative piano playing. © *2018 ECM Records US, A Division of Verve Music Group. Her tone is sumptuous, moaning, throaty, with a catch of ache snagged in the instrument’s midrange. Her phrasing in the Préludes always seems to be worrying away at a nagging question—you can feel urgency in the way she presses up against her own tempo slightly in the Prelude to the D Minor suite. Her Bach is furrowed-brow Bach, crisis-of-faith Bach, toiling Bach. Her instrument has never sounded lovelier or humbler than it does here.” - Jayson Greene, Pitchfork The poetry and radiance of Bach’s cello suites are transfigured in these remarkable interpretations by Kim Kashkashian on viola, offering “a different kind of somberness, a different kind of dazzlement” as annotator Paul Griffiths observes. One of the most compelling performers of classical and new music, Grammy-winning Kashkashian is hailed as "an artist who combines a probing, restless musical intellect with enormous beauty of tone”, and she brings to Bach revelatory commitment and intensity.
