At the bottom of this article about Kerry Joseph it says that the Bombers have released Jason Armstead. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1167693/

Procter & Gamble (Gillette) has purchased The Art of Shaving. AOS sells only one item which is highly regarded on the internet, its hard shaving soap, which is widely believed to be made by Valobra in Italy. Here's hoping that P&G doesn't decide to discontinue it. http://www.reuters.com/article/mergersNews...036942020090603

The list of the top 50 standards played by musicians.
GA Russell replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Musician's Forum
I question Sophisticated Lady. I don't think that it's as popular as the other 49 songs. Many of them were written earlier than I had thought. -
New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
GA Russell replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
Lala got this Hubbard album in today. I'll plan to listen to it soon. -
A few years ago I saw a tabloid at the supermarket that had a picture of Einstein on the cover, and said "Are you a genius? Take this test to find out!" I thought to myself that it probably said on the inside, "If you bought this magazine, you're not a genius!"

All packages were mailed today. I'm really quite surprised that no one has scarfed up the five Clifford Browns.

As you can see, I have again changed the thread title to reflect that the season is upon us. ***** David Naylor discusses the state of coaching in the league this year. "Aside from B.C. Lions boss Wally Buono, who will likely become the league's career leader in wins this season, none of the league's other seven head coaches have more than a single year at the helm of a CFL team. For the second season in a row, half of the league's teams have installed first-year head coaches – meaning never have so many had so much to prove." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1162252/ ***** The Globe and Mail gives capsules of the teams, of the sort one usually finds the day before Opening Night. Happy Birthday 2009 Durium! And keep swinging!

The Regina Leader Post is publishing this week a series of pre-season analyses of the Riders by position. First up are the linebackers. http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Saskatche...4096/story.html ***** The Lions re-priced their tickets in the off-season. As a result, ticket sales are down 10%, but revenue is up. http://www.theprovince.com/sports/football...1567/story.html

Quite a story about last night's game between Texas and BC. One relief pitcher pitched 12 innings of no-hit ball after pitching the previous day. The other pitched 9 innings and allowed only three hits. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/base...article1161984/

Groovadelphia back in stock!
GA Russell replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I finally got around to opening up Groovadelphia on Jim's birthday Monday, and it is so much better than I expected! I think that DownBeat missed out by giving it only three stars. I would give it four stars. The three star rating gave me the impression that it was a standard organ trio date like This Is the Place, but it's not. Joe's guitar has the spotlight for most of the album, and his playing gives the cd a unique sound. Congrats guys! -
I listened to this last night on Lala. I like it too. I think it's more of a Pat Metheny album than a Gary Burton album.

There is a link in the article VBII linked to, here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/archie...article1155671/ It says that the marriage will take place after the gang graduates from college. I've been out of touch with Archie for not quite fifty years, but are they really college students now? Don't they still have Miss Grumby as a teacher? I remember when Dobie and Maynard went to college, and Mr. Pomfred went with them as their professor. Maybe Miss Grumby did the same thing.

I was thinking just the other day that I can't remember the last time I saw comic books for sale at a drug store or elsewhere. I've seen real books at Borders, if you know what I mean. I've also seen "Archie Digest" by the supermarket cash register, but regular old comics of Donald Duck or Archie I can't remember.

Julie Coryell, Jazz-Rock Historian, Dies at 61
GA Russell replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thanks for posting that! I've never heard of the book, and I'd be interested in reading it. I remember her from the album covers. -
Thanks for posting that! My copy of Thelonious In Action had a cartoon drawing of Monk flying in the air (as I recall with a cape, etc.) like Superman. I believe that it was issued after Riverside went under, before ABC bought the catalogue. It was stolen when shipped UPS, and I've never seen another copy of it.

Mike Vanderjagt has requested and received his release. His feeling at this time is that he doesn't want to play this year, but he did not officially retire because he realizes that he may change his mind. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Tor...9601576-cp.html

Jazz artists with remarkable careers but never really composed much.
GA Russell replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
My first thought was Cal Tjader.
