  1. Mike Westbrook Concert Band - Marching Song, sides 3&4 (Deram) 1969 The Ventures - Walk Don't Run (Dolton mono) 1960 The Lounge Lizards (Editions EG) 1980 The Best of Wes Montgomery (ABC Riverside) The Ventures' first two albums were their best IMO. They introduced a lot of kids to musicianship.
  2. You're welcome, Mark! Has anyone seen any PJ titles that look interesting?
  3. For a few years I was a big fan, with the Mosaic box, a Capitol LP, cassette and CD, a Concord double CD and a Mack Avenue CD. But then suddenly I became somewhat tired of him. I still listen to everything I have of him at least once a year.
  4. MG, I always liked the Skyes except the Armando Perraza. I don't believe that I recall the one you mention by Chuck Rainey. I would compare Skye to Verve. Production values were excellent. I never heard anything that would turn people off, so maybe you would consider them all to be "lackadaisical", but I believe that almost everyone here on this board would like them when in a mellow mood. They're solid jazz. At the prices dccblowout.com is offering, how can you go wrong? edit for typo
  5. I have read that it was Milt Jackson who first put the motor on a very slow setting. MG, my favorite Tjader album has always been Plugs In. Although as I recall Armando Peraza is on congas, it does not have the Latin feel that most of Tjader's albums had. I think you would like it. See my post above from last week about my ordering a CD copy of it. As I stated, there is a $25 minimum order, so you might as well get all three of his Skye albums (like I did) while you are at it.
  6. Thanks for that story Lush Life! Flutie played for the Argos just two years, '96 and '97; and led the team to Grey Cup wins both years. So I guess the Argos were justified in keeping him happy! edit to correct years
  7. Robert Wyatt - I'm a Believer (4 track 12" 45rpm EP on Br. Virgin) 1974, 75, 77 Mike Westbrook Concert Band - Marching Song, sides 1&2 (Deram) 1969
  8. There is a post at AAJ today which says that http://www.ejazzlines.com is selling their entire stock of Toshiba Blue Notes for $10.00 each. I'm not the Blue Note devotee that many of you are, but that's a good deal, isn't it? Here's the link: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=20396
  9. OK, you guys have convinced me. I've added it to my Your Music queue.
  10. Danny McManus retired today. He stayed a few years too long, but he was one of the greats. I'll never forget the 1994 Western Final in which he led BC to a last play win over Calgary. He's going to be an analyst for TSN. There are only eight teams in the league now, and he played for Winnipeg, BC, Edmonton, Hamilton and Calgary. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home
  11. EMI is Blue Note and most of the British Invasion. Now we'll have to see if they are willing to devote the resources to reissuing recordings not on CD.
  12. My order arrived today. That was quick! I haven't seen these albums since they were LPs, and looking at them today in their shrunken state gives me the same feeling I had when CDs were just coming out twenty years ago.
  13. The Kenny Rankin Album (Little David) 1977 Georgie Fame - History of British Pop Vol. 5 (Br. Columbia) Charlie Parker - The Cole Porter Songbook (Verve) 1985 compilation
  14. Here's a link to an article about six current and former NFL players who invested in a hedge fund apparently operated by a fraud. The players claim that the NFL and NFLPA perform services advising the players regarding investments, and that they have retained companies which should have known that the hedge fund manager was a fraud. They say that collectively they lost $20 million. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home
  15. Does anyone know for sure how to pronounce Lajoie?
  16. Jan Shapiro has been the Chair of the Berklee voice department since 1997. (With 750 voice students, only the guitar department there is larger.) She has been a teacher there since 1985. Her students have included Tierney Sutton, Luciana Souza and Paula Cole. She has a new self-produced album out on her own label called Back To Basics which is available at CDBaby for $12.99. She also has two other albums there which were recorded in the mid-90s. Back To Basics has 8 songs, totalling only 31 minutes. Seven of the songs are standards, and the eighth is Horace Silver's jazz standard Sister Sadie. The standards include Change Partners, Squeeze Me, Our Love is Here to Stay, Beautiful Friendship and S'Wonderful. All four members of the quartet backing her are Berklee colleagues. I am familiar with only drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. Perhaps some of you know one or more of the others: Tim Ray on piano, John Baboian on guitar and John Repucci on bass. Their solos are token. This is Shapiro's album all the way. Shapiro has a baby doll voice, but shows remarkable similarity to Linda Purl. She is 57 years old, but still has perfect pitch. This is a great little album. Even at this late stage of her career, I can see a label signing her. I'll be playing this one often. Those of you with high speed internet service may want to look at her website at http://www.janshapiro.com My dial-up service can't handle it. 4 stars edit for typo
  17. Thanks for that link, Mike. It looks like he is busy now with Creedence Clearwater Revival with all the unreleased indications, but maybe he hasn't done anything with them since the German albums came out.
  18. Mike, I think that Media Mail rates are available only to US addresses. Did I read a couple of weeks ago here in that thread about remastering that Steve Hoffman owned a piece of DCC? That's what I recall, but I may be wrong. Isn't DCC closed down for good? What has Hoffman done lately?
  19. dccblowout.com has been mentioned in a number of threads, so rather than start a new thread about it, I thought I would relate my experience here. I went there Monday the 26th and placed an order for five CDs. There is a minimum order of $25.00, excluding shipping. I picked four Skye/DCC albums (all of which I believe but I'm not sure were remastered by Steve Hoffman): Cal Tjader - Solar Heat Cal Tjader - Plugs In Cal Tjader - Sounds Out Burt Bacharach Gary McFarland - America the Beautiful I also picked a Charles Brown album called Since I Fell for You. The sub-total came to only $26.96. The website automatically set me at the least expensive shipping rate in its system, which was FedEx ground service for $11.98. However, reading the small print on a link they suggest you read if you are a first time customer, I found that they will send it Media Mail rate if you type in the words "Media Mail" in the comment box. They will manually reset the shipping charge for half the stated rate. The following day I received an email with an attached invoice stating that the order had been shipped, and that the shipping charge had been reduced to $5.00. Delivery was promised in 7 to 14 days. I'm not in a hurry for these, so that is fine, and I save $7.00 shipping. So the grand total came to $31.96 for 5 CDs, or $6.39 each.
  20. Hatfield and the North - The Rotters' Club (Jap. Virgin) 1975 Shorty featuring Georgie Fame (Epic) 1969?
  21. I received my Legrand and Tjader order today. I guess ten days isn't too bad. That's three days more than what my Your Music orders usually take. The Tjader has a b&w cover. Its tray card is also b&w. It appears to have been in their inventory since 1998. I would definitely prefer color, but at the price I can't complain. CD Universe has the album for six dollars more - $10.65 plus shipping. edit for typo
  22. Happy Birthday jl!
  23. Red Garland - Red in Bluesville (Prestige OJC) I like this much more than At the Prelude.
