  1. Ah, Ingrid is now teaching part time at the University of Michigan. Heard Organissimo last night at The Alley Door Club in Muskegon. Good crowd, great music. Randy's new drum set and Joe's new guitar are, as Nessa said last night, "Shiny."

Try the new Benny Golson Jazz'tet; new solo Martial Solal at the Village Vanguard; new one by trumpeter Vinnie Cutro, I believe; Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic; the Blue Note 7; Vince Mendoza's Blauklang; a Gary Smulyan disc arranged by Mark Masters called The Jazz Heart (Soul?) of Frankie Laine. Many new ones. Been playing them lately on Jazz From Blue Lake around our retrospective survey of Ray Charles great instrumentalists...Fathead, tonight Hank Crawford, Friday Marcus Belgrave, who also has a new one with his friend Charlie Gabriel including a swinging version of "Bill for Bennie."

  19. And, of course, there are many other Cherokee solos to compare it to. I mean Diz on "Koko" with Bird live...who is ever going to top that? Brownie's solo with the Max Roach quintet, a staple of young musicians. There comes a point where there are the classics and then there's everything else, which approach the classics yet rarely surpass them. And for what it is worth I heard Bowie playing a full evening of standards after a Chicago Jazz Festival appearance with the Brass Fantasy. He was on for two full sets at the Southend Music Works. Everyone was playing changes. His creativity in that setting -- he was still Bowie, all in -- encompassed more of the the totality of the trumpet tradition than just about anyone I've heard since. Not sequentially a la homage, but creatively, emotionally, melodically and without much self consciousness. As they used to say, he was natural.
  20. During a recent Jeremy Pelt "Before and After" he pointed to Clark Terry's solo on "In A Mist" from the "Happy Horns of Clark Terry" as being one of the key places Wynton comes from. When the WM Quartet played Grand Rapids right after that Blue Note Quartet album was issued, the one with "Free to Be" on it, he played "Cherokee" and used a long verbatim quotation of Clifford Brown's solo on "Cherokee" as the "head" on the end of the tune.
  21. I was on that cruise. Had a chance to interview Clifford Jordan who left us soon after. Also recorded interviews with Milt Hinton, Doc Cheatham, Leonard Feather, Jackie McLean, Charlie Persip and Randy Weston. That was a bittersweat sail.

  23. Herbie Hancock Statement On The Passing Of Freddie Hubbard Freddie Hubbard was, I believe, the greatest jazz trumpet stylists of my generation. His influence is still being felt in the sound of many young trumpeters today. His warm tone and formidable technique will be considered marvels well into the future. Personally, I was so fortunate in that Freddie played on my very first album as a leader "Takin' Off". He was exactly the person I wanted and his contribution was groundbreaking. On a tune called "One Finger Snap" on a subsequent album of mine, his beginning improvised solo line worked so seamlessly that it became a kind of generic "melody" that most musicians still believe was the composed melody, when in fact it was not. He and I crossed paths musically in several albums. In the group VSOP he was a founding member who's artistry helped propel that project, which began as a one time tour, to a decade of memorable musical inspirational moments for me. His legacy is secure in that he played a seminal role of the shaping of the evolution of America's foremost contribution to the musical arts, jazz. Herbie Hancock
