Play ball! 2019 MLB season thread

The point of the additional comment was that it's the first time that it's happened in any sport with a 7-game series, not just baseball. -
Everything on the Berigan Gangbusters CD from Hep comes from Victor releases, Sept 1938-March 1939.

Happy birthday to a great Guy! 🎉 -
I played this on the weekday afternoon show several times after it came out and recall liking it a great deal. I’ve long wanted to do a Night Lights program about Chet’s later-period recordings; prompted by both his upcoming 90th birth anniversary and several of Larry’s recent posts here, I’m going ahead and penciling it in for December. In terms of 1980s sides (which will most likely define the parameters of the show), I have Blues For A Reason, The Last Great Concert V. 1 and 2, the Let’s Get Lost soundtrack, and the Chet In Chicago date that Larry discusses above. What other Baker albums from the 1980s would Larry and other posters here recommend that I delve into for a Baker Night Lights show?

Friend and fellow baseball/jazz fanatic who listens frequently to NYC morning sports talk radio (he’s a Mets fan) just texted this to me and another baseball/jazz devotee: “I just heard this: This WS is first time in history of any sport with 7 game series - NBA, NHL, MLB - in which road team won first 6 games.” -

Astros already back in the driver’s seat after winning game 4, and now Scherzer’s been scratched from his start tonight because of neck spasms. Looking pretty good for Houston and pretty bleak for the Nats right now. -

A little seasoning for my Saturday night: -
My Saturday date with the Duke:

Yes! I came across a used copy of it at Landlocked last week--being a fan of the several other relatively modern Holman big-band albums that I have, I didn't hesitate to snap it up.
-
Just purchased a reasonably-priced copy off Discogs. Glad that I already have volume 2, which does indeed seem to command high prices these days. Jim's suggestion has really ignited my interest in doing such a show, and in finally getting around to reading the Gluck book. (I'm so behind in my reading, partly because I, like many others here, I'm sure, tend to acquire interesting books, not to mention CDs, at a rate far faster than I can read or listen to.)
-
Fortunately I've already got this one, though haven't listened to it in a long time. Thanks for your and Jim's advice... how is the preceding V. 1 of Blue Note material?

Well-agreed on that, but "shit-stupid" is a kind way of putting it. More like Trumpian bluster/arrogance, what with the immediate unsigned statement that attacked the reporter and said the whole story was fabricated (after refusing to talk to said reporter before she even published the story in the first place!) and the whole slew of dumbass without-a-clue responses and incidents that followed, including this one (Astros GM says many people oversaw scathing statement): Luhnow, who was addressing the decision to fire assistant general manager Brandon Taubman for his actions in the locker room after the Astros' victory over the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series game, was asked whether he personally reached out to reporter Stephanie Apstein. “I have not — I’ve been traveling up here,” Luhnow said, according to the MLB Network. “We’ve been — I had to have a pretty tough conversation this morning with someone that’s worked for me for a long time. But, I will as soon as I can.” According to MLB Network’s Hazel Mae, Apstein was sitting at the press conference. I mean f&*%, these guys are just clueless when it comes to anything not involving analytics/winning baseball/making money, which, granted, is what it's all about, right? Obviously what it's all about. No, I have no illusions about the nature of other professional sports organizations, but damn, the Astros have, as I said earlier, really shown their ass to the world this week. Keeping your ass in your pants is a good sign of all sorts of things--restraint, respect for self and others, and better for business too. The past few days have provided little evidence that *any* of that is flourishing in this particular organization. They're coming off as Trumpian dudes (as Jeff Passan of ESPN noted, they have an attack-back-when-attacked mentality, whether they've actually been "attacked" or not... sure sounds familiar to me!) who didn't even bother to check out what went down in the first place until it all blew up in their faces after that initial press release. But here, let an Astros fan and blogger break down how even the announcement of the Taubman firing was laced with a considerable amount of b.s.: The Astros' statement, with thoughts All of that to me points to a deep and systemic, fundamental dishonesty at work within this organization. And yeah, I know that said dishonesty is at work everywhere, but they haven't been able to get it right for nearly a week now, which says to me that they do indeed have some f'd-up issues at play. Per that post on the Astros County blog, this passage resonates as well: " How much of what our society is currently experiencing - and especially to those of you who think that Baseball is: a Respite from What's Actually Happening and not what Baseball actually is: Indicative of What's Actually Happening - could have been avoided if you just, simply, believe the report and the corroborations of the report." The Astros seem *very* indicative of What's Actually Happening, the ongoing shit-storm that we're not allowed to discuss at Organissimo because I guess jazz is supposed to be a "Respite from What's Actually Happening" (regardless of all the jazz artists who have spoken out in the past several years). And the way they handled this whole incident is not some kinda weird, clumsy aberration, but testimony to an ongoing mentality of win-at-all-costs-and-bluster-dishonestly-at-anybody-who-gets-in-your-way. I've had enough of that noise for a lifetime, thanks, which is why I'm still hoping that the Nats smack them down in the World Series. -
Yes indeedy! That's a great idea... if I do it, you shall receive a full and loud credit, sir! Actually working on the 2020 schedule right now... that would be a good fit and light a fire under my butt to finally crack open Bob Gluck's book about that band.

To be fair, this is apparently a longstanding practice for World Series hosting stadiums and would have been carried out if the Astros were up 2-0--for *their* benefit, were they to win it all at DC. There's no chance of that happening, since they're down 2-0, so it looks worse than it really is. Age of everything-captured-on-cellphone and all that. Also agree that canning Taubman, while not resolving the obvious issues that Houston has as an organization, at least most likely gives the clubhouse more of a chance to put it behind them, psychologically speaking. There's still a lot of fight to come in this series, methinks. -
A happy 93rd birthday today to Jimmy Heath. Here's a 2015 Night Lights show about his Riverside years.
-
I have Burton's New Quartet album, the Towner/Burton Matchbook collaboration, and a later Towner; can probably track down a number of the sides recommended in this thread that are currently neither in my or the station library's possession. But I agree that material that represents the seeds of what ECM became is worthy of inclusion.

Very, very bad baseball juju, gents: Nats employees practice onfield trophy presentation Very bad. 🤔 -
Great update! On the phone the other day Scott said they were still trying to figure out how to sequence it and still keep it a 7-CD set, but yeah, it’s definitely steaming ahead!
-
That is a great list, Jim—thanks so much. (And I may well round the show off at 1974... just so much good music to choose from.) I have the Maupin, the Motian and the Corea/Burton, but none of the others.

Hey all, I'm finally getting around to doing a long-contemplated Night Lights show about the first several years of the ECM label. Obvious candidates for inclusion are Mal Waldron's Free At Last and Marion Brown's Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun, Jarrett's Facing You, Circle's Paris Concert, Dave Holland's Conference of the Birds, etc., but what are some of your favorites from the 1969-1973 era? (I think 1973 is as late as I'm going to go, which still leaves me with a ton of material to choose from. Here's an overall list of ECM releases: List of ECM Records albums
