  1. The physical edition of this set seems to have gone OOP (weirdly enough, I’d pulled mine off the shelf just several hours before news of Taylor’s death broke—it includes Michael Bourne’s old WFIU theme music, Joe Farrell’s “Follow Your Heart”), but used copies are floating around online, and it’s on Spotify. Highly recommended as a CTI overview, along with the expanded CD reissue of California Concert: CTI: The Cool Revolution
  2. Way, way too soon. Heartbreaking.
  3. One more go-around this past week for Caravan: Martial Solal, The Early Years, and up in honor of his 95th birthday.
  4. Nate Chinen’s obit
  5. https://twitter.com/clichedout/status/1561542083134963714?s=20&t=qxtVbrH4APY6RdR9GFXTvQ
  6. Josh Jackson of WRTI is reporting on Facebook that Michael Bourne passed away at the age of 75 last night. The afternoon jazz slot that I host here at WFIU in Bloomington, IN was Michael's from 1972 until 1984, when he left for New York City and ultimately landed at WBGO, making a global name for himself as a DJ. Still much-missed and loved by older listeners here in Bloomington who remember hearing him.
  7. We re-aired Out Of The Shadows: Percy France this past week, and I’m upping the thread today in honor of what would have been his 94th birthday.
  8. This is such a good series:
  9. Yes, I believe so. I’ll check with a colleague who has a scanner and see if he can do them tomorrow.
  10. Do you have Stanley Dance's The World Of Duke Ellington? I was skimming it last night to see if I could find the quote, and there's some interesting commentary from Greer in there on pg 62-69. I can try to scan or photograph and send it to you if you'd like.
  11. I had the same thought. My copy’s at the office, so I’ll try to check later on. I just posted the question to the Duke Ellington Society group on Facebook as well.
  12. It sounds familiar to me, but I can’t think of where I came across it. Are you putting this question to the Jazz Research listserv? Decent chance that someone there might know the answer. I can also post your query to the Ellington Facebook group I’m in, unless you’d for any reason prefer that I not. This quote pops up a lot through Google searching, but I can’t yet find a solid source for attribution. Is it the one of which you’re thinking? "If you have a great band with a mediocre drummer, you have a mediocre band. If you have a mediocre band with a great drummer, you have a great band!"
  13. Revisiting these two albums via a new coupled-together reissue. Man, I sure miss this guy.
  14. Man, I’d forgotten how much I enjoy these Earle Spencer sides (which Chuck Nessa hipped me to many years ago on this site) that make up disc 11. Vera and Wenzel in their notes say that the band in its time was thought of as “the poor man’s Stan Kenton.” How about “the less bombastic man’s Stan Kenton”? (said as one who likes many Kenton recordings from this era as well)
  15. Shameless plug for a Night Lights show about this era: The Second Great Trio: Ahmad Jamal On Impulse
  16. I'll definitely pick this one up if it ever comes out on CD.
  17. We recently re-aired First Fusion: Jazz-Rock Before Bitches Brew, and it remains archived for online listening.
