  1. Just finished this fascinating new biography of director Michael Cimino. Here’s a writeup about it from the New Yorker: A new biography of Michael Cimino is as fascinating and melancholy as the filmmaker himself
  2. Man, thanks so much for mentioning this collection. I ordered a copy after seeing your post and am nearly through disc 1, enjoying it a great deal. I like Billy Vera's concept in the liner notes of listening to the set as a late 1940s/early 50s jukebox.
  3. Wow, I just came here to post the very same album! Must be in the air… Verve Elite was such a great series.
  4. Disc 1 of this lovely set from Rhino’s Handmade series—purchase inspired by a recent discussion here on the board:
  5. Lovely remembrance and photo that remind me of my own childhood. Speaking of childhood, listening right now to this classic from my youth:
  6. Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions, and yeah, that's a good point of reference. Another good musical point of comparison IMO, though not a Mosaic set, is Rhino's Central Avenue Sounds box set from the 1990s. There may even be several Black & White releases in that collection.
  7. We re-aired How Professor Bop Paid His Dues: Babs Gonzales this past week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  8. Nice version of Hank Mobley’s “Funk In Deep Freeze” on this.
  9. Had the very same reaction, Joe. Certainly fits right in with the mythos that surrounds him. An extraordinary artist.
  10. Actually working on a sort of sequel to this show that will focus on Columbia’s mid/late 1970s jazz roster, with some commentary from Michael Cuscuna.
  11. Savor the first taste of a historic find "The rare cachet of the songbook albums is one way to make sense of the unusual decision to present Ella in a split program of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin repertory at the Hollywood Bowl, on Aug. 16, 1958. She performed with an elaborate congress of musicians billed as the Hollywood Bowl Pops Orchestra, conducted by Paul Weston, who'd also conducted and arranged the orchestra on the Berlin songbook album."
  12. Sigh--no CD reissue, apparently. I'll keep hunting for the old one, in that case.
