  1. Count Basie: Clef/Verve 50s Studio Recordings, Discs 3 & 4 (Mosaic) JATP: The First Ten Years (Proper Box) Sonny Rollins: Silver City Peace, Jeff T
  2. So how much is the S&H on the pre-orders and how do you place an order? Jeff T
  3. Mr Paradise by Elmore Leonard. IMO our finest crime novelist toady and one of the best ever, ranking with Hammett and Chandler. The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey. Still not sure about this one 35 pages into it. He writes well, but is style enough to carry it? Who Built America? It's vacation week so I have time to read, thank God! Jeff T aka Blue Trane
  4. Pulled pork, BBQ Chicken, potato salad, cole slaw and whatever side dishes my group of friends bring. What a lovely way to spend an evening. Peace, Jeff T aka Blue Trane
  5. Personally, I avoided John Klemmer and Robin Kenyatta to name two players from opposite ends of the spectrum. Then there was Sonny Sharrock...I also avoid sessions arranged by Claus Ogerman and Don Sebesky if possible-two arrangers who could never seem to let their egos get out of the way of the improvising musicians.
  6. Another fine Smithsonian Collection: Jazz Piano. 4cds with a lovely survey of styles and artists. Of course there are omissions but this is a yeoman's effort. A fine soundtrack to while away what Henry James termed the the two most blessed words in the English language : summer afternoon. Peace, Jeff T aka Blue Trane
  7. There is a great deal obviously of Milestone only that could be reissued as part of the Keepnews Collection. I would suggest McCoy Tyner's Supertrios, Atlantis, or 4x4 as deserving candidates. Jeff T
  8. Sonny Rollins: The Complete Prestige Recordings, Disc 1 Peace, Jeff T
  9. Woody Herman: Woody's Winners. Nice sides on vinyl, esp. at the $.50 I spent for it at a garage sale. Features Bill Chase and Sal Nestico. The band is live and exciting. "Nuff said? Peace, Jeff T
  10. Joshua Rifkin: Piano Rags by Scott Joplin, Volumes 1 & 2. Vinyl for $.50. I had no ragtime to speack of in my collection so this seemed like a worthy addition. There's the occasional annoying "tick", but the Lp is otherwise in good condition. As for the music-I like solo piano and am hoping to gain a greater appreciation of Scott Joplin. Woody Herman: Woody's Winners. Vinyl @$.25 . I've seen reviews that encouraged me to take the plunge. I'm fond of Bill Chase and this album features him prominently. Bruce Springstein and The E-Street Band Live- 3 Cassettes @ $1.00 Bill Cosby: Wonderfulness. Condition: Marginal. Do I care? This is strictly a cheap exercise in nostalgia for some routines that cracked me up when I was a kid. Original Cast: Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris. I have a very beat vinyl copy so this is a welcome replacement via Ebay. Peace, Jeff T
  11. Marty Feldman Lillian Helman Woody Held Peace, Jeff T
  12. Then there's Getz Meets Mulligan in HI-FI. Tunes include :Lets Fall In Love; Anything Goes; Too Close For Comfort, Scrapple From The Apple. Featuring Lou Levy, Ray Brown, Stan Levey. What more could you ask for in a recording from this era? I saw Mulligan with Brubeck and at a jam session for Newport In New York?-(my brain is addled on that score) Obviously a master player and arranger. Put my vote down for the Mulligan-Monk encounter as well. Both discs cited belong in most serious collections-unless you just don't dig Monk or Getz. Peace, Jeff T aka Blue Trane
  13. Um, Um- Lucky Thompson: Lucky Strikes; Paul Chambers: The Whims of Chambers; Earlier this week- We Three-Roy Haynes; Phineas Newborn, Jr; Paul Chambers; St Louis County Library yielded Ella Fitzgerald: The Harold Arlen Songbook Charles Mingus: Cumbia and Jazz Fusion Charles Mingus' Finest Hour Bud Powell: Paris Sessions Wild Bill Moore: Bottom Groove Ray Charles: Ray Sings, Count Basie Swings Yes, I'm home on vacation this week. My Visa is calling my name. Peace, Jeff T aka Blue Trane
  14. Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra Fargo, North Dakota November 7, 1940. A field recording by the young Jack Towers capturing some of the greatest live Ellington ever. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. Peace, Jeff T
  15. Stax 50th Anniversary Celebration. Yes I know all 50 tracks have been reissued several times, however, IMO, the sound is as good as it gets for these often primitive masters. Yes, the improved sound is worth $20 and it comes with a nice booklet, too. Curtis Fuller: New Trombone. I have mixed feelings about this release-it's likely that they could have used some rehearsal time. I'd give it three stars. I like Curtis' Savoy and Blue Note work better. Sonny Clark: Standards. Nice trio work here. I wish we'd been left more trio material. I love his feel on Blues In the Night. Peace, Jeff T. aka Blue Trane
  16. Personally, I find it difficult to pick out her greatest recordings and say this is it, this is all I need. The anthology I return to time and again is Ella Fitzgerald-First lady of Song and also the 3 disc set of the Songbooks. Your turn. Peace, Jeff T
  17. The finest late night album I know is Ben Webster's Atmosphere for Lovers and Thieves. This Turrentine Three Sounds IMO is also an excellent wake up session as you ease into the morning. Peace, Jeff T
  18. Bill Watrous: The Tiger of San Pedro. Great Big Band sounds from the 70s. Peace, Jeff T
  19. Dexter Gordon With the Junior Mance Trio Live At Montreux burns! Great playing from both Junior and Dexter. Easily one of my favorite live jaz recordings. Peace, Jeff T,
  20. Dexter Gordon with The Junior Mance Trio: Live At Montreux performing Fried Bananas Rhythm-A- Ning Sophisticated Lady, Blue Monk, Body and Soul, The Panther Let's see: LTD in '73 making what I believe to be his greatest live date with an absolutely smoking Junior Mance. If you'd never heard Junior before you'd run, not walk, to grab some more. BTW: I'm not sure if this set is in print outside of the Complete Prestige Recordings Box of Dexter's recordings for the label. Peace, Jeff T
  21. The Paul Chambers Mosaic Select Booker Ervin: The Freedom Book More Duke Pearson Peace, Jeff T
  22. After a lifetime of listening to jazz I still don't get it. Help with good entry points will be greatly appreciated. I love Hard bop-especially the Blue Note 60s sessions, if that helps. Thanks in advance. Peace, Jeff T
  23. I'm thinking about the Duke Pearson and/or Paul Chambers box sets fromMosaic Select. Any comments would be helpful. Peace, Jeff T
  24. The best hamburger in St Louis-and the best I've had anywhere- is at an Irish pub called O'Conell's . Not only do they know how to cook medium rare but each burger is a small materpiece. I don't know the how of it but O'Connell 's has never failed to deliver in the 20+ years I've been going there. PS The rib tips are mighty fine, too. Peace, Jeff T
  25. No.Now if his forehead were steak and ice cream-the Duke Ellington favorites that "lubricate the ears" then defintely yes.
