We Swedish-Americans even speak English funny, so I am sure you're correct, Hans! My goodness - what a lot of commends about the great Roberta Gambarini-Roy Hargrove concert in "Ternoezen", as Roy always says ..... ... and I feel a bit jealousy .......... such famous musicians in a small place like Terneuzen, with its great Porgy en Bess Jazz club . I recognize the fact that people living in the Randstad, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague think that jazz is only played in that region and outside these places you can only find some local brass bands, ukulele ensembles and accordion clubs. Sorry, but there is a lot more to enjoy between Groningen and Terneuzen, I'm sure. Have a look at my concert log what concerts I joined during the last ten years. Click on the years 2000 up to 2009 and search for the Porgy en Bess logo and ............. become jealous. Keep swinging durium

ROBERTA GAMBARINI Quartet ( + ROY HARGROVE) in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club - Terneuzen ( The Netherlands) In the last weekend of March 2009, a Mini Jazz Festival, titled Summertime, to label this opportunity, was organized at the cozy Huiskamer Van De Jazz, the Living Room of Jazz in the Noordstraat in Terneuzen. On Sunday the Italian-American vocalist Roberta Gambarini was scheduled with her quartet and, thanks to a lucky coincidence, also Roy Hargrove could be present with his quintet at both days. So, enough elements for a hot and swinging weekend in Porgy en Bess Roberta Gambarini and Roy Hargrove Live in Porgy en Bess Keep swinging Durium

Jeff Aug has successfully set the world record "most concerts performed in different countries in 24 hours" by performing 6 x concerts in 6 x different European countries on the 13th and 14th of March 2009. He started at 7 pm in Vaduz, Liechtenstein on 13.March and ended at 6 pm in Heerlen, Netherlands on 14.March 2009. According to Jeff, the "Wounded Fingers World Record Tour" was incredibly exhilarating. The audience in Vaduz, Liechtenstein was thin, but enthusiastic. In St. Gallen, Switzerland, the touring party ended up driving to the wrong address (the promoter´s home instead of the club), but then quickly worked out the right address and parked right in front of the venue, jumped out of the van, and Jeff performed show number 2. Show number 3 was in front of a Friday night theater audience in Dornbirn, Austria. The drive to Immenstadt, Germany took the band through the Bregenzerwald (Bregenz Forest) over the Alps through heavy fog. These first 4 shows were back-to-back from van to stage to van to the next venue, topping off with an incredible concert in front of a massive crowd at the Rainbow in Immenstadt, Germany. The tour crew then set off on a 7.5 hour drive to Belgium through the night. On 14.March, Jeff woke up with a stiff arm. The record was set in Verviers, Belgium (5 concerts was needed to set the record), and then signed, sealed, and delivered a hair-raising performance at show number 6 in Heerlen, Netherlands which Jeff performed with a bandaged arm. ELIANE ELIAS Bossa Nova Stories This great record has been released some months ago and contains 14 well known Bossa Nova tunes, traditionals like Jobim's The Girl From Ipanema, Chega de Saudade of course and Desafinado and tunes like Marvelous For Words, The More I See You and Day By Day that have become standards in jazz. A special one is Superwoman, a Stevie Wonder composition with our own Toots Thielemans on his Muziekske, his harmonica. The tunes, no suprise, are all well known - some with a large orchestra, using strings, rather common for this kind of music and a quartet featuring Oscar Castro-Neves on the guitar, Marc Johnson on bass and Paulo Braga on drums. I grew up in Sao Paulo in the 1960s, hearing the Bossa Nova which was all around us. It was the popular music of our day, with its infectious rhythm and poetic lyrics. It was romantic, cool, jazzy, sensious. I lived and reather this music. It's in my DNA. (Eliane Elias) Bossa Nova Stories Keep swinging Durium

ANDRE EKYAN It is within French jazz that one finds some of the earliest evidence of European voices establishing themselves on the saxophone. The contributions which André Ekyan (1907-1972) and Alix Combelle (1912-1978) made to the musical genius Django Reinhardt in the late 1930s are clearly informed by their literate enthusiasm for such American masters as Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter and - above all - Coleman Hawkins. In their recordings one finds altoist Ekyan and tenorist Combelle preparing cultured pathways for the elegancy and bite of their American confreres. JEFF AUG Within a few weeks, on the 13th of March 2009, Jeff Aug will release his fourth solo guitar album, titled Living Room Sessions. Jeff Aug is an acoustic instrumental fingerstyle guitar player with a tremendous technique. To promote a new album artist organise tours along venues, to show their fans the music of their latest album. So does Jeff Aug. But for this album he didn't chose for an old stand-by-run-of-the-mill number. No, you won't find Jeff in a weary fortnight tour along a dozen venues, but in a full European tour, labeled as the Wounded Fingers Tour 2009, in one day (!), which means 6 concerts in six countries within 24 hours. These are the countries scheduled for this attempt on a record for the famous Guinness Book of World Records in the category: Most concerts Performed in Different Countries in 24 hours: On the 13th of March (Jeff's birthday) he’ll perform at 7.00 am in Liechtenstein, at 9.00 am in Switzerland, two hours later in Austria and at 1.00 p.m. in Germany. In the afternoon Jeff Aug will perform in Verviers in Belgium (at 2.00 am) and this short, but intensive tour, will be concluded in De Nieuwe Nor in Heerlen (The Netherlands). MAT MATHEWS On the 12th of February, 2009 the Dutch accordion player Mathieu Schwartz passed away in Rotterdam aged 84 years old. He became famous in the 1950s as Mat Mathews in the New York jazz scene. This fact passed by almost unnoticed by the jazz scene and the news media. A shame !! Mat Mathews, accordion player.
