  1. About track 2 I guess that the virtuoso clarinet player on the second track could be Al Gallodoro, but I don't recognize the tune. If it is Al Gallodoro it icould be the Paul Whiteman Orchestra (or one of its smaller groups) somewhere in the late 1930s About track 4 Sleepy Time Gal by Paul Whiteman's Sax Soctette. Although I can't find this tune recorded by the Sax Soctette it could be a (radio) transcription.

  3. Hi all, Let's do a guess ... track 1 - In the mood - Edgar Hayes and his Orchestra? January 1938. The piano solo could be his.
  4. Thank you Rhanson, I know the release date. I am seeking for the recording date. It is strange, that most "poppy' jazz CDs never have recording dates. BTW: Welcome to the list. You like Peyroux's voice? It remembers me to Billie Holiday

(APCD-6011). Most bands on this compilation are well known jazz-influenced dance bands from the late 1920s and early 1930s; bands with famous bandleaders like Ben Pollack, Jean Goldkette, Paul Whiteman, Roger Wolfe Kahn, Red Nichols and Ted Weems. The musicians weren’t often satisfied about the results, Richard Sudhalter says in his book “Lost Chords”, because the record supervisors decreed what titles and arrangement were commercially interested. The recordings “never showed more than a fraction of what we could do ” and “they never let us record our best arrangement ”. Nowadays, 75 years later, we still can enjoy these white band recordings, all made for Victor, and we shall have to live with the knowledge that the bands sounded live “hotter” as musicians later claimed. For the fanatical collector the recordings don’t bring surprises, besides the perfect sound quality. Nearly all recordings have been reissued on (now rare) LPs; some are to find on CDs. This compilation gives, together with volume one, a balanced view on the recordings Victor offered the US during this period. Don’t forget to find a copy !! Keep swinging Hans Koert

    Roberta Gambarini

I agree with all the foregoing messages. It is very strange that she never recorded an album. I do have the Swiss recordings too. I saw her performing a year ago, 16 Nov. 2003 with her quartet (Roberta vocal, David Gazarov p, Jimmy Woode b and Steve Williams om drums) at the Porgy & Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (The Netherlands) (near the Belgian border). In fact it's a bit like Madeleine Peyroux. We had to wait too long for her second album, didn't we? Finally it has been released. Great !! For images find the Porgy & Bess webstie and click on < Agenda > < Overzicht 1988 - heden > < 2003 > and find the Roberta concert 16 Nov. 2003

  20. The Complete Hit of the week Recordings - volume 1 (1930); Announcement Archeophone Records: Release date: November 30, 2004 They sold on newsstands during the Great Depression for 15 cents and quickly became the best-selling records of the early 1930s: the laminated flexible cardboard records known as "Hit of the Week." Featuring the top songs of the day, performed by some of the most noted jazz and dance musicians (often under pseudonyms), Hit of the Week records provided just that--one hit, once a week--to an American public with hardly a dime to spare but hungry for great music by great artists. Today, you'll find a number of these records all curled up and unplayable at garage sales down the street, but for the first time ever, Archeophone is presenting the complete output of the Durium Company, makers of Hit of the Week records, during its short lifespan. In collaboration with producer and engineer Doug Benson, and with a great helping hand from the world's top Hit of the Week scholar, Hans Koert, Archeophone's Volume 1 of the Complete Hit of the Week Recordings issues 46 songs on two CDs from that magical year of pop music, 1930. In addition to the regular weekly issues by Hit of the Week from February through October of 1930, this collection presents several extremely rare non-standard-issue advertising and promotional records from the Durium company. So collectors take note! You may have some of these records, but you probably don't have all of them in the pristine shape found here along with the excruciatingly uncommon issues such as "Back in Your Own Back Yard" or "Get Happy" or even "Mysterious Mose." They're all here! Those of you who like the classic dance songs of the early electric era with some of America's most memorable lyrics will want to take note too, because you'll find here songs such as "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips," "Little White Lies," "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes," and much, much more. And, with detailed liner notes and attractive illustrations, the 24-page accompanying booklet is worth the price of admission alone. This is the CD you'll be taking to all your Christmas and New Year's parties.
