  1. I just received a mosaic order and there was a little card advertising this new company making shirts w/ Blue Note artists on them. Stuff looks ok not as cool as that other company (the name escapes me). I hadn't seen mention of this on the board so I just wanted to pass it along. Here is the link
  2. I can confirm this. I just saw the same guy myself. Some good titles there!
  3. This set is no nonsense small group jazz at it's finest (save for the first disc). I would highly recommend this set. Sonny mixes it up playing both tenor and alto and his improvisations / lines are exquisite. Sure there are all the Stitt clichés but he plays with such precision you are taken aback with every listen. While not much of a writer, Stitt's mastery of the blues and standard tunes is of the highest order and each solo is a master class in itself. Don't hesitate on this one.
  4. Does anyone here have this? If so are they willing to part with it??? Wishful thinking I know. If not would anyone be so kind as to list what's contained in this set? Thanks in advance.
  5. Ok well I saw the show last night (2nd set). They played four tunes (Giant Steps, Chief Blackwater, Body & Soul and some generic funk tune). The show was about 1 1/2 hours. The line up was: Garrett, Sanders, Dave Kikoski, Nat Reeves, and Jeff "Tain" Watts. Garrett was absolutely incredible as always. They opened with Giant Steps and his solo was stunning. His command of the changes and his ability to build up intensity sent a shiver down my spine. I've seen him a number of times and it just gets better and better. Kikoski was incredible as well. I had not really checked him out before. I was very impressed. He was not only technically commanding but he gave the rhythm section, along with Watts, an elasticity that I've not seen with Garrett's regular working groups. Think Miles' Plugged Nickel material. I have to say Sanders was the weak link among the band. While his tone was beautiful and he has excellent technique, his grasp of Giant Steps and it's possibilities as an improvisational vehicle were rather limited. He just played fast and glided over the changes with no real harmonic or rhythmic command. It was just a flurry of notes with no real thought process going on. Sanders sat out for the second tune, Chief Blackwater which is a Garrett tune from his last record. The tune in structure is like a 16 bar blues. At least that's what it sounds like to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong someone. Anyway, I couldn't understand why he didn't want to blow on a tune like that. It swung like mad and I would have loved to hear what he had to say on a tune with a less demanding harmonic structure. Body & Soul was for the most part a feature for Sanders and he really sounded great on this one. I really can't say enough about his tone. Very warm. The last tune was great but again Sanders seemed out of his element. His solo seemed lazy and he just appeared to be uninterested. I don't know, perhaps I just caught him on an off night. At any rate it was worth checking out and I recommend seeing this group if they hit your town.
  6. Anyone going to this? Should be pretty interesting. I think I'm going to go tomorrow night. Here's the info
  7. We may never see a comeback like that in our lifetime again. I'm speechless.
  8. Well said Dan. Last nights win was so important. At the very least just to not get swept by the Yankees at Fenway. I can't think of anything more humiliating. While visiting family this summer in Maine I saw the best Sox shirt. It went something like this: "I support two teams. The Boston Red Sox and whoever beats the New York Yankees." There's still a glimmer of hope but I think I'll be rooting for the Cards or Astros very soon.
  9. Well I'll be in the bleachers somewhere. I've never been out there so it will no doubt be an experience. Needless to say I won't be flaunting my sox cap. I'd rather not get pummeled with beer, fists and hot dogs. Regarding Mariano, I have to say that I think it's a bit tasteless on the Yankees part to ask this guy to come back. Let the guy mourn his family members for god sake. I don't know, maybe he wants to get back but something tells me Burns and Smithers (Steinbrenner and Cashman) have something to do with it.
  10. Somehow someway I managed to snag tix for games 1 and 2!
  11. Hey, Harold, I got it: "Moose and Leiber And the rest pitch like Weaver" Dan I like your optimism. Personally I'm very nervous. Head to head I feel like the Sox can take them. But the Yankees pull out dramatic wins that not even a Hollywood script could come up with. It's sickening to see over and over. And it worries me that they will have the last at bat for potentially four games. I'm still not over last year's ALCS. I felt like I was in mourning for days after that defeat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and the Maalox right near me for the next week and 1/2.
  12. Hi Five to ya Dan!!! What a sweet sweet win! I'm still reeling. Arroyo was brilliant today.
  13. Hey Dan, I got your back man. It ain't easy being a Red Sox fan and that's especially true here in New York. I get so angry every morning riding the subway having to look at the back page of the NY Post and the NY Daily News which always has some stupid catchphrase about the latest Yankee victory. It's time to slay the dragon once and for all and if the Twins can't do it I really think the Sox can. On the other hand... A buddy of mine came up with a great analogy about the Sox saying that 'being a Red Sox fan is like being the child of an alcoholic parent.' They promise you the moon and ultimately let you down. But I think this is a different team with a different attitude. They seem to be having fun out there and there is a swagger that I've not seen in a Sox team save for last year. The bench is so deep and if Francona plays a smart, strategic game there's no reason they can't go to the World Series and, *gulp* win it all! I like your thinking about the pitching rotation. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I've found that when Wakefield pitches on a crisp fall night, the ball dances in ways that makes him unhittable. Maybe it's just my own little two cent observation but I really do think he performs better with that scenario than in a day game. Are there statistics on this??? And yes I think Arroyo will do fine today. He's been a very nice surprise this year. GO SOX!!!
  14. I'm getting very excited. I think the sox are going to sweep the angels in 3 or at the very least take 'em in 4. BTW, have any of you sox fans here read Bill Simmons' colum on ESPN's page 2.
  15. This is a great record. And in my opinion, exemplifies the "Blue Note Sound." It's unfortunate that the first session didn't produce more music but what little we get to hear is incredible. The melody of Quadrangle sounds like Jackie was beginning to stretch his wings (could it be possible that he had heard Ornette's stuff in January of 1959???) and break free. Interesting that he was still tied to using "rhythm changes" for the solos but even here he's starting to stretch out beyond the normal bebop approach. Think I'll listen to this on the commute home tonight!
  16. I have this and it's really great. Dowd resume is just incredible as most of us know. He comes across as a very cool, down to earth guy. He does make one blunder though when he talks about Coltrane off in the corner warming up on his "alto" before a session. An honest mistake I guess considering the amount of hours he's logged in. It's definitely cool to hear him talk about the Ornette stuff. Definitely worth picking up!
  17. 1000's of used jazz records Used jazz LP's, Blue Note, Prestige, Verve, Columbia. call Sharon for more info... 212 769 4495 this is in or around 69th bet Columbus and br. Here's the link I know a lot of you aren't in NYC but perhaps she'll ship stuff. Good luck all!
  18. Hey John, I sent you a pm regarding the Rollins set.
  19. It's a great guitar. I bought it new (in '97) and gigged w/ it for a short while but for the most part it's been safe at home so it's in good condition. I picked up a Howard Roberts Fusion model a few months back which is the reason I'm selling it. I have it listed for $1100 but I would sell it for $1000 to a Board member. Here are some pictures and a bit more info If anyone is interested or you know someone who is looking please contact me. Thanks, Walter
  20. Nah I missed that. I'm sure I can find one used somewhere. Or maybe someone has an extra copy lying around?
  21. Hi I don't know if anyone can help me out with this one. My 13 month old got hold of my Talkin' and Walkin' CD and scuffed it all up. It won't play anymore! The case and booklet are fine. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.
  22. I thought I was going to get by without needing this one. Well guess what? I caved and made the purchase last night. I pulled out the single Thundering Herd disc that Columbia put out a few years back and I was just amazed at the writing and playing and equally horrified at the sound on the disc. I should receive it tomorrow and I can't wait! Anyone have more reviews to share about this set?
  23. Hi Tom, I actually saw them for sale at the Jazz Record Center here in NYC. If you don't see them in your area and would like me to pick one up for you let me know.
