  1. Hey all, I'm off to London (UK not Ontario) on business for a few days next month and I'm wondering if there are any hip cd / record shops that anyone could recommend. Thanks in advance
  2. Two tunes really stick out for me: "Perception" and the Terumasa Hino tune "Alone, Alone and Alone"
  3. Actually the only software you need is iTunes which you can use to manage all of your mp3 or AAC files. Once you burn your files to your hard drive you just drag them to the iPod icon that is docked on the left side of the interface (similar to windows explorer) and the file transfer, which requires firewire is so fast and seamless it's amazing. The iRiver sounds nice but the only thing I don't like about what I've read here is that it uses USB rather than firewire which is a much slower data transfer. Anyone here that has one know if it also takes firewire?

    Hank Mobley

I am amazed at how many of you really don't care for his playing on the Blackhawk recordings. I know there is a lot in print that fuel this notion but I think he sounds great on those sides! His tone is really crisp and he plays such tasty, melodic, lyrical lines throughout. I mean these were made during his so called peak right? I've always wondered if most people would feel the same way about these recordings if influential sources like the Troupe/Miles book and the Penguin guide haven't been so widely read. When I listen to Mobley I'm not interested in how prodigious his technique is or how he compares to Coltrane, Dex or Sonny Rollins. I'm purely interested in his conception and music. Maybe I have tin ears or something but I'm very impressed with his work on these recordings and I would love to overturn the collective opinion that he wasn't "happening" with Davis's group. It's time for everyone to reassess these recordings? Screw what Miles and Richard Cook say!!!
  5. Recieved mine tonight, #25. Funny I received #24 tonight. Do I hear 23 or 26???
  6. Anyone going tonight? I'm gonna try to catch the second set.
  7. yeah I thought it odd as well but hey, I'm not complaining. I was bummed when this one disappeared the way it did with no warning.
  8. Picked this up at the Jazz Record Center today. All four discs and the booklet but no box. Can't wait to dig into this set!
  9. One of mine would also be seeing Kenny Garrett live for the first time. I caught him at Sweet Basil's about 4 years ago and it was just an amazing experience. He did a bunch of Trane tunes and a killer version of "One Finger Snap". I stayed for both sets that night and I catch him every time he comes to New York. As far as recordings go there are so many but a few that stick out are: -- Art Pepper's version of Summertime on Modern Art. It's an incredibly emotional performance. -- Coltrane's soprano solos on Afro Blue from Live at Birdland and Spiritual (I think the first night) from the Villiage Vanguard recordings. -- Stan Getz / Jimmy Raney Live at Storyville recordings. That is one smoking band. -- Joe Henderson's solo on "If" from Unity. -- Tony Williams' performance on "Air Raid" from Grachan Moncur III's Evolution This could go on forever so I'm gonna stop.
  10. I agree with you there DrJ. The reason that came to mind for me was primarily his playing on the Standards CD and in particular his version of "I Cover The Waterfront". It's so elegant and the perfect foil for Miles during that period.
  11. Now I don't know if any of you have ever thought about this but have you ever wondered or wished Sonny Clark had played w/ Miles Davis? I wonder if Miles was even aware of Sonny at the time? I think a dream session would be Miles, Trane, Clark, PC and Philly Joe! And heck even Mobley for Trane would still be gorgeous! All I can do is dream I guess...
  12. I love all things Sonny Clark! This one is a particular favorite of mine.
  13. Your eyes do not deceive you. And let me tell ya, it's a struggle everyday but you gotta believe. Between last year's ALCS and the A-Rod trade it's been one slap in the face after another.
  14. It's definitely Bach. I think the tune is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" anyone?
  15. wow that's like Charles Ives on steroids
  16. The one I end up going back to over and over is No Room For Squares. The title track, Three Way Split, Me' N You and Carolyn are really great tunes and the band plays great.
  17. If anyone has a copy lying around I have a few things I'm willing to trade: Curtis Amy -- Katanga Cooper / Shank -- Blowing Country Kenny Dorham -- @ The Cafe Bohemia Vol. 1 (japanese mini lp cover version) Lee Morgan -- Leeway (japanese mini lp cover version)
  18. Prestige Atlantic Impuse! Complete Quartet & Village Vanguard Pablo European Live recordings and Legacy I think. Love 'em all
  19. Edward and Uncle Skid, I urge both of you to really listen to "Air Raid". It's truly some of the most amazing ensemble playing on record that these ears have heard. Tony Williams' dialogue w/ each soloist is nothing short of stunning. The way he adjusts his approach to Moncur, McLean, Morgan and Hutcherson just blows me away every time. He plays all these subtle rhythmic and melodic things that really push each player into some very inspired playing. I hear a lot of records where the players are playing for themselves and/or at each other but rarely have I heard playing that is so communicative. That kind of listening to one another is true mastery. Hard to believe Tony was 17 or 18 years old to boot! Anyway sorry to get so over enthusiastic about this track but I think if you isolate this one and give it a few listens you'll find some beautiful things going on.
  20. Yeah I'm wondering those things myself. At the very least the jacket inside could give credit to the original source. It's got my curiosity. I'll have to swing back by the store and check it out.
  21. Anyone see the cover for this book? I was walking by a Barnes and Noble and there it was in the window on display. I wonder if the contents of the book are as cool as the cover?
  22. Thanks for all the support and recommendations. I've listened to Discs 1 & 2 and I really love it so far. The small group stuff w/ Barney Kessel and Tal Farlow is really outstanding!
  23. So I came into some birthday money (thanks btw for the bday mention in the misc. forum for those that did) and I decided to take a chance and go for the Anita O'Day box. Now I'm probably like a lot of you on here and not a huge jazz vocal lover but I've been reading some very nice reviews of her records from that period and I've liked the bit of stuff that I've heard. Anway, I'm looking for some support from you people here. BTW, for insurance I picked up the Shank/Cooper and Curtis Amy Selects.
