  1. I can not determine the source of the Dutch cd, it has at least "Hey Pete, Let's Eat More Meat" that is not on the Jazzdisco.org track list for the Chester concert. The Hindsight discs have not just good but excellent stereo sound, better than a lot of the studio recordings from 1957. Seems that there exist some more live recordings other than the Newport and Chester / PA sets.
  2. Jazzdisco.org lists two live sessions of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in 1957: The Newport concert of July 6 (released on Verve), and the concert in Chester PA of June 14. The latter produced 23 selections, 13 of them released on Jazz Unlimited (Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra "Live", Chester, Pennsylvania, June 14, 1957), the remaining 10 on Jazz Hour (Dizzy Gillespie Big Band Live In Stereo At Chester PA ). The two Hindsight cd (HCD 282, HCD 283) combine 20 tracks overall. The following selections, listed by Jazzdisco.org, are missing on the Hindsight discs: My Reverie, Yesterdays, I Love You Too Much, Wonder Why. The following selections on the Hindsight discs are missing on the Jazzdisco.org list: Tin Tin Deo, Groovin' For Nate, That's All, Tour De Force, Manteca. These differencies suggest that the Jazz Unlimited and Jazz Hour releases on the one side and the Hindsight releases on the other side cover different live sessions. This would mean that there exists a live session by the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band not covered by Jazzdisco.org. Otherwise, i.e. the recordings on the Hindsight discs stem from the Chester concert, one would have to assume, that the respective listing on Jazzdisco.org is incomplete. So there is room for further conjecture, or rather inquiries.
  3. Here are the timings of the respective tracks on the two Hindsight releases: A Night In Tunisia 9:38 Doodlin' 4:23 Autumn Leaves 3:09 Dizzy's Business 4:22 I Remember Clifford 3:54 Jordu 3:45 Whisper Not 4:56 Birk's Works 4:59 Jessica's Day 4:41 Left Hand Corner 2:33 Cool Breeze 8:19 My Reverie and Yesterdays are not on the two Hindsight cd. Some tracks are very close in timing others are significantly different, so the definitive answer is left open ...
  4. "Birk's Works" is superb, a classic on par with the best of Ellington, Basie, Herman et al. If you like "Birk's Works", i strongly recommend the following releases: "A Night In Tunisia" Hindsight HCD 283 1. Groovin' For Nate 2. Left Hand Corner 3. Doodlin' 4. Annie's Dance 5. That's All 6. A Night In Tunisia 7. Whisper Not 8. Tour De Force 9. Dizzy's Blues 10. Manteca "Cool Breeze" Hindsight HCD 282 1. Jordu 2. Groovin' High 3. Jessica's Day 4. Tin Tin Deo 5. Dizzy's Business 6. I Remember Clifford 7. Autumn Leaves 8. Begin The Beguine 9. Birk's Works 10. Cool Breeze The liner notes (by John Jungklaus, never heard of him) provide no information on the exact recording date(s), recording venue(s) and personnel. According to Jungklaus the original live recordings were made by Wally Heider, the digital remastering by Joe Sidore. These are exciting live performances by the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in peak form; sound is nothing short of sensational, even better, I dare to say, than the Verve studio recordings of 1956 and the Verve Newport recording of 1957. Wally Heider was one of the best in the business. Both cd are available at www.worldsrecords.com for $10 each. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band of 1957 in best possible sound quality. Highly recommended!
  5. In the meantime I found time to have a listen. These are exciting live performances by the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in great form; sound is nothing short of sensational, even better, I dare to say, than the Verve studio recordings of 1956 and the Verve Newport recording of 1957. Wally Heider was one of the best in the business. Both cd are available at www.worldsrecords.com for $10 each. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band of 1957 in best possible sound quality. Highly recommended!
  6. Might be the same concert. A track by track comparison could clarify, but that would demand me to buy the Jazz Unlimited release, what I am not willing to do, risking that I have the identical recordings twice.
  7. I purchased two 2007 Hindsight releases by the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band online from Worldsrecords: "A Night In Tunisia - Big Band 'Live' 1957" and "Cool Breeze - Big Band 'Live' 1957". The liner notes (by John Jungklaus, never heard of him) provide no information on the exact recording date(s), recording venue(s) and personnel. According to Jungklaus the original live recordings were made by Wally Heider, the digital remastering by Joe Sidore. The track lists are as follows (the usual repertoire one also finds on the Verve twofer "Birk's Works"): "A Night In Tunisia" 1. Groovin' For Nate 2. Left Hand Corner 3. Doodlin' 4. Annie's Dance 5. That's All 6. A Night In Tunisia 7. Whisper Not 8. Tour De Force 9. Dizzy's Blues 10. Manteca "Cool Breeze" 1. Jordu 2. Groovin' High 3. Jessica's Day 4. Tin Tin Deo 5. Dizzy's Business 6. I Remember Clifford 7. Autumn Leaves 8. Begin The Beguine 9. Birk's Works 10. Cool Breeze Does anyone have any idea, when and where these recordings were made and what the exact personnel was (possibly the same as on the Newport Set)? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.
  8. I came across this one several times but never took a closer look, dismissing it as a compilation. Of the three Verve albums compiled here, I know the Harry Edison/Buck Clayton, an excellent session (I have it on vinyl). What is your comment on the other two?
  9. Sonny Clark - Dial "S" For Sonny (Blue Note)
  10. "Mr. Allen" seems to be part of the Prestige compilation "The Hot Trumpets Of Joe Newman & Henry 'Red' Allen", available on cd. Amazon.com lists four dealers with new copies in stock.
  11. I came across this thread looking for some Lucky Thompson recommendations, since I recently noticed, that I have not one recording by him as a leader (shame on me!). I do have the wonderful recordings he did with Milt Jackson in 1956 on Savoy. Further I would like to point to two sideman dates not yet mentioned in this thread: Jo Jones - The Essential Jo Jones (Vanguard) Lucky is part of an all star cast also including Emmett Berry, Lawrence Brown, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green and of course Jo Jones; a great set of swinging mainstream jazz Jack Teagarden - Personal Choice (King) An excellent 1954 set of Teagarden warhorses with Ruby Braff, Big T, Lucky, Sol Yaged, Kenny Kersey, Sidney Gross, Milt Hinton and Denzil Best
  12. Dizzy Gillespie - Birks Works, The Verve Big Band Sessions (Verve)
  13. HEY!!!! i just noticed that your avatar is a chiaroscuro cd!!! Yes it is. I very much like the artwork of Leo Meiersdorff, who did a lot of Chiaroscuro covers.
  14. My copy of "Les Trésors Du Jazz 1956" arrived yesterday. Looking forward to listening to it. I love this series!
  15. Let us know what you think. I've had my eye on that box as well. I will comment on the set as soon as I have found time to listen to it.
  16. My favorite record shop has been displaying several copies of the Trésors 1956 sets for the past few days Just be patient and you'll be 51 years younger very soon Yesterday I got notification from amazon.fr that my copy of "Les Trésors du Jazz 1956" has been shipped. I am looking forward to it.
  17. Fats Navarro - The Fats Navarro Story (Proper, 4 cd box)
  18. Ahmad Jamal - The Legendary Okeh & Epic Recordings (Epic) Dizzy Gillespie - At Newport (Verve) Kenny Dorham - Quiet Kenny (New Jazz) Horace Silver - Horace-Scope (Blue Note) Art Blakey - A Night At Birdland (Dreyfus Reference)
  19. Hope Amazon France doesn't need weeks to get hold of it and send it to me ... : Thanks for the news. On the "my account" page of Amazon France it says regarding my order of Les Trésors du Jazz 1956: "Date de livraison estimée : 12 novembre 2007 - 16 novembre 2007".
  20. Just now I am listening to "A Night At Birdland" by the Art Blakey Quintet featuring Clifford Brown on Dreyfus Reference. This is timeless music, Clifford is absolutely great, Lou Donaldson is in fine from too and Art Blakey swings like mad; sound, as usual on Dreyfus Reference, is exceptional. The Dreyfus edition of the famous concert consists of the following tracks: 1. Split Kick 2. Once In A While 3. Quicksilver 4. A Night In Tunisia 5. Mayreh 6. Wee Dot 7. If I Had You 8. Now's The time 9. Confirmation This is not the complete set covered by the three volumes on Blue Note. Thanks to all of you who recommended this set, it is a winner!
  21. I especially like: Bobby Hackett - Live At The Roosevelt Grill Vol. 1 - 4 Ruby Braff / Ellis Larkins - Grand Reunion Ruby Braff / George Barnes - Live At The New School Buck Clayton - Jam Session #1 and #2 Bob Wilber / Kenny Davern - Soprano Summit Earl Hines - At The New School Bob Wilber With The Scott Hamilton Quartet Bob Wilber / Kenny Davern - Summit Reunion / Yellow Dog Blues Urbie Green - Sea Jam Blues Kenny Davern / Flip Philips - Spanish Eyes Kenny Davern / Joe Temperley - Live At The Floating Jazz Festival Mike Jones - Stretches Out Mike Jones - Live At The Green Mill Bill Charlap - Along With Me
  22. I finally purchased the twofer "Fats Waller Complete Victor Piano Solos" on Definitive (I know, I know ...). This is the most complete compilation of Waller's Victor solo sessions on cd so far, spanning the period from 1927 to 1941 (52 selections overall, 8 of them alternate takes), omitting only the two solo recordings from 1922 and adding the six-part London Suite as well as 6 radio transcription recordings from 1939. Sound, to my ears, is good (I have nothing to compare) and the music is marvelous: stride piano at its best by one of the pioneers of the genre. Highly recommended to fans of Fats.
  23. Added Look Out - Phineas Is Back! to my collection: a wonderful album. Now I am searching for a decently priced copy of Back Home.
  24. I am currently listening through the "Piano Jazz" 10 cd box set (just finished disc 4). Messrs Francis and Schwarz again did a great job in compiling and remastering the pearls of recorded piano jazz from 1906(!) through 1952 (mostly solo performances, some trio, few with orchestra accompaniment). This is a treasure chest for lovers of ragtime, stride, boogie woogie, swing and be bop piano. Highly recommended!
