  1. The fake stereo for my ears is not disturbing at all, the remastering produced a very clean and listenable sound. I like it, but this sure is a matter of personal taste.
  2. Small-group material (up to 10). These are essential small group swing recordings, comparable to the Teddy Wilson / Billie Holiday sessions or the Benny Goodman Sextet and Septet recordings. Lionel Hampton assembled all star groups in the studio gathering the top soloists from the top swing orchestras (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway a.o.) that happened to be in town at the time. One of the highlights is the session that featured a reed section of Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Chu Berry (!), another session brought together Benny Carter (on trumpet), Coleman Hawkins and Edmond Hall, just to give you an idea.
  3. The sound on "100% Proof" is poor to say the least. The music though is great.
  4. Does anybody here know Kasper Villaume and/or Carsten Dahl, two young Danish pianists? If yes, how would you describe their playing and are there any recommended records?
  5. Hm. Both volumes for a tenner here in uk - straight from avid via amazon. Hm. Or in fact straight from Avid: http://www.avidgroup.co.uk/acatalog/index.html Edited to add: HMMMMMMMMMM What are you waiting for?
  6. As for Roger Kellaway, I have the following records and they are all great: - Art Of Interconnectedness (Challenge): Piano solo - Alone Together (Dragon): Duo with Red Mitchell on bass - Live At Maybeck Recital Hall (Concord): Piano solo - Life's A Take (Concord): Duo with Red Mitchell - I Was There (IPO): Piano solo - Heroes (IPO): Trio with Bruce Forman and Brad Lutz I have him also on : - Inside & Out (Concord): Duo with Ruby Braff - The Happy Horns Of Clark Terry (Impulse): With Phil Woods, Ben Webster - The Power Of Positive Swinging (Mainstream): With Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer - More Blues & The Abstract Truth (Impulse) by Oliver Nelson - Cookin' On All Burners (Stash) by Sherrie Maricle / John Mastroianni all are recommended
  7. I have the two 2 CD sets by Avid (UK) All Star Sessions Vol. 1 and All Star Sessions Vol. 2, containing altogether 100 tracks, covering the RCA Victor recordings from 1937 to 1941. Great sound, rudimentary liner notes, complete track, date and personnel listing. Superb playing by all involved.
  8. Stefano Bollani / Jesper Bodilsen / Morten Lund - Mi Ritorni In Mente (Stunt) Stefano Bollani Trio - I'm In The Mood For Love (Venus) Roger Kellaway - At Maybeck Recital Hall (Concord) I am looking forward to listening to these discs.
  9. Thank you very much for the recommendations. I wil check them out and report back.
  10. There are two cd's by the Tom Kubis Big Band entirely dedicated to Steve Allen compositions, Keep Swingin' and Fast Cars And Fascinating Women, both on Seabreeze. These are somewhat conventional big band recordings, but Tom Kubis' charts are uplifting and swinging, and benefit from the presence of top-notch soloists and section players (the usual "west coast studio suspects" like Wayne Bergeron, George Graham, Ron Stout, Andy Martin, Bill Liston, Rusty Higgins, Ray Brinker, and as a guest Jack Sheldon).
  11. At present I am very much into European pianists. Here are some favourite recordings of mine: - Bengt Hallberg: The Hallberg Touch (Phontastic) A solo effort of the fairly original two-handed Swedish pianist with hints of stride and Garner - Enrico Pieranunzi: Live In Paris (Challenge) Absolutely superb piano trio (with Heyn van der Geyn and André Ceccarelli) - Enrico Pieranunzi: Alone Together (Challenge) Featuring Philip Catherine, fine effort, not that adventurous as other Pieranunzi recordings - Enrico Pieranunzi / Dado Moroni: Live Conversations (ABeat) Sparkling with energy and a wealth of ideas, swinging like mad, state of the art piano duo, highly recommended live recording - Michel Petrucciani: Piano Solo - The Complete Concert In Germany (Dreyfus) Overwhelming - Michel Petrucciani: Conversations (Dreyfus) Delightful and highly entertaining duets with his father Tony Petrucciani on guitar Michel Petrucciani / Eddy Louiss: Conférence De Presse Vol. 1 & 2 (Dreyfus) The pairing of just organ and piano proves, in the hands of these two virtuosos, to be very satisfying - Jan Lundgren: Cooking At The Jazz Bakery (Fresh Sound) Swingin' be-bop piano with the superb rhythm team of Chuck Berghofer and Joe LaBarbera - Jan Lundgren: Les Parapluies De Cherbourg (Marshmallow) This is piano trio jazz at its best, Lundgren plays film music themes, accompanied by the great Danes Jesper Lundgaard on bass and Alex Riel on drums - David Newton: In Good Company (Candid) A fine mainstream trio effort of the english pianist - Brian Lemon: My Shining Hour (Zephyr) No surprises, nothing adventurous, just swinging and tasteful mainstream piano trio jazz (with Dave Green and the redoubtable Allan Ganley) - Raymond Fol: Echoes Of Harlem (Gitanes) Highly recommended solo recording (lots of Ellington) - René Urtreger / Daniel Humair / Pierre Michelot: HUM (Stretch) Another unsung French piano master, this 3 cd set compiles three different sessions from 1960, 1979 and 1999 by three virtuosos on their respective instruments; this is not piano with bass/drum accompaniment but trio jazz by three instrumentalists with equal rights - Stefano Bollani / Ares Tavolazzi: Italian Mambo (Philology) Fanciful tribute to Dean Martin(!), sometimes with a wink, highly entertaining swinging piano/bass duo (Volare, Buonasera and the likes), recommended - Andrea Pozza: Introducing (Philology) - Andrea Pozza: Sweet Lorraine (Venus) Another fine Italian pianist, slightly more mainstream than Bollani, but great listening - Christian Jacob: Time Lines (Concord) - Christian Jacob: Styne & Mine (WilderJazz) - Christian Jacob: Contradictions (WilderJazz) All three records by this French Pianist with residency in the US are highly recommended, this is brilliantly executed modern piano trio jazz, complex but nevertheless very accessible - Rossano Sportiello: Heart And Soul (Arbors) - Rossano Sportiello: Piano On My Mind (Jazz Connaisseur) Brilliant Italian stride and swing player in the line of Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Dave McKenna, both solo efforts are highly recommended to fans of the genre Any commentary or further recommendations?

  17. While writing this post I am listening to Raymond Fol's solo piano on Echoes of Harlem, vol. 110 of the Jazz in Paris series, originally recorded in 1975. What a wonderful record! This is my introduction to an artist who until now I wasn't aware of. As Alain Tercinet says in his liner notes: "He [Raymond Fol] was a faultless technician, and he'd forged an original style that encompassed all the schools of jazz piano while owing allegiance to none ...". He has a beautiful touch, a strong left hand, complete mastery of the instrument and an elegant style. His discography seems to be very small. Are there any recommenadtions?
  18. It was the 5 Cd London House set I was referring to. I listened to the whole thing through about a month ago, for the first time in several years. It struck me again as it did before - consistenly inventive, swinging, and interesting. Basically the opposite to everything Allen Lowe says about OP's playing. I think it may be overall OP's best playing in disc, partly because the Brown-Thigpen group was the best he ever had, (IMHO). Other personal favorite OP recordings include the London Concert on Pablo with John Heard and Louis Bellson, plus the four CD's recorded at the Blue Note in 1990 with Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Bobby Durham (on Telarc). Top-rate mature Peterson before the devastating stroke a couple of years later which diminished his playing quite significantly. I am a big Oscar Peterson fan and have a large collection of his recordings. I completely agree with John's opinion and recommendations, although I would add Night Train on Verve, The Oscar Peterson Trio in Tokyo 1964 on Pablo (with Brown and Thigpen) and On the Town on Verve with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown.
  19. These are excellent records. The CD with Tissendier features the group Saxomania, an all sax front line. I also would recommend the recent CD with Carl Saunders on Jazzed Media, Play Henry Mancini.
  20. "Preminado" and "Chasin' The Bird", both on OJC, rec. 1960/61 and 1962 respectively are both solid and swingin' be-bop piano trio dates. Highly recommended.
  21. Some records by two great european pianists: René Urtreger - Move (Black & Blue) Daniel Humair, René Urtreger, Pierre Michelot - HUM (3 CD, Sketch) Stefano Bollani - Solo Piano (ECM) Stefano Bollani - Mambo Italiano (Philology)
  22. I very much like his duet recordings with Michel Petrucciani: Conférence de Presse, 2 CD, on Dreyfus, recorded live 1994.
  23. Hello everybody. I, an ardent jazz fan and hobby musician from Switzerland, am new to this board (as a member, not as a guest) and would like to start a new thread as my first contribution to the forum. This is a beautiful record that represents everything that makes jazz such an exceptional art form: Two masters on their respective instruments improvising on nine standards by some of the best songwriters, interplaying on the highest level and swinging like mad (without the help of bass and/or drums). Roger Kellaway, in my humble opinion, simply is one of the most accomplished and interesting, but at the same time under-appreciated jazz pianists with a stunning technique and a powerful left hand, capable of playing convincingly in any style from stride to be-bop and beyond. His playing on this set is no less than masterful, whether accompanying Braff or soloing imaginatively. His playing is full of twists and turns but always keeps a swinging pulse. Ruby Braff displays all his virtues: beautiful tone, sometimes bright sometimes shady, harmonic richness and melodic inventiveness. The interplay between the two musicians is striking. Both are very much steeped in the tradition and at the same time open for modern conceptions. For me this is a most satisfying and exciting recording and therefore highly recommended.
