  1. In the meantime I got the information by way of a PM from a board member.
  2. I recently purchased the Artie Shaw 3-cd Hindsight set "King Of The Clarinet - Live Performances 1938-39". I got the three discs without the box and the companion booklet. Now I am looking for the discographical information (band personnel and recording dates and locations). Internet search so far was not successful.
  3. Thanks, Harold. I already spotted the two Chronological Classics. They are on my want list.
  4. Thanks very much, Augustin. Guarnieri seemed to have recorded more in the 50's, 60's and 70's than I was aware of. Do you know if any of these albums have been reissued on cd?
  5. Johnny Guarnieri was one of the truly great swing piano stylists and one of a handful (or two) of superb stride players. He was part of several first rate swing sessions in the 40's (some of them classics like the recordings with Benny Goodman's Sextet and Septet, the famous quartet recordings of Lester Young on Keynote and the Gramercy Five sessions with Artie Shaw). He was scarcely recorded after the 40's, but did two outstanding solo albums in 1978 ("Fatscinatin'") and 1984 ("Echoes Of Ellington"). Guarnieri, a descendant of the famous italian family of violin builders, had phenomenal technique and a light swinging touch. He was, to my ears, influenced by Fats Waller, Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, a great accompanist and capable of producing interesting and always swinging solos. The two solo sessions already mentioned (issued on the rather obscure labels Caz Jaz and Star Line respectively) are highly recommended for lovers of swing piano; Guarnieri displays his inventive approach and superb technique to great advantage on two tributes to Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. Any other recommendations (solo or trio) and / or oppinions on this unduly neglected pianist?
  6. Braff was a highly consistent player and you generally cannot go wrong with any of his recordings. However my personal favorites are: Ruby Braff - George Barnes Quartet: Live At The New School (Chiaroscuro) Ruby Braff - Ellis Larkins: Grand Reunion (Chiaroscuro) Ruby Braff: Very Sinatra (Red Barron) Ruby Braff: Live At The Regatta Bar (Arbors) Ruby Braff - Dick Hyman: America The Beautiful (Concord) Ruby Braff - Dick Hyman: Play Nice Tunes (Arbors) Ruby Braff - Roger Kellaway: Inside + Out (Concord) Ruby Braff: Being With You (Arbors)

  14. I did hope (and think) so, but still taking a step back I felt stupid about posting that (it's pretty irrelevant anyway...) Did you pass by the store already? You'll have to ask specifically, I assume (the one guy that was there still recognizes me although I usually drop by once a year only, but he always pulls out piles of stuff not displayed... or just say you heard about the Classics from someone... I plan to pass by later this afternoon. They mention the classics on their website and encourage to ask for items not displayed. Will report back...
  15. Is this used store in Zurich? If so, would you mind to disclose the name and location of this store? Thanks. He he, should I? As I won't be able to buy all I want anyway, yes of course! It's Silverdisc (Limmatstrasse, Tramhaltestelle Dammweg, eins vor Escher-Wyss-Platz). Most of the discs are not displayed but the guy there let me check them myself in their backoffice. Cost is 14 CHF per disc - not that cheap, but good enough, considering they're new or almost new (one had some writing in the CD list inside the booklet, though... doesn't bother me too much, but if it bothers you you might want to check thoroughly. The earlier 6 Basie discs are by the way still available from Abeillemusique for 25 euro... just sent in an order there, myself, though I have all of that music already on various CDs and CDRs... now I miss said 1941 volume plus the Neatworks. Just in case: what I remember is: large chunks of Ellington, Calloway, Krupa, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson (I think I'll rather go for the Heps there, if I ever get them all... I have the Billie Holiday box, so I have many of those sides already). It's pure overkill, but you're bound to find some great stuff there, I'm sure! And make sure you also check the displayed discs, some Classics are in there, they just stock up whenever some other discs are sold and the have more space in their display shelves. Thanks very much. I appreciate your unselfish attitude. you'll have to do burns of all the discs I won't be able to get now because you're wealthier than me... that was int eh fine-print in the previous post, didn't you see? The fine-print was too fine-printed, thus it did not appear on my computer screen. Just out of curiosity: Why do you assume that I am wealthier than you? well, I'm a student (though with an ok paying part-time job) and you're 15 years older... but then you have family... stupid thing to post anyway, sorry! -_- Never mind! I took it not that seriously.

  19. There's also The Jo Jones Special on Vanguard with Emmett Berry, Benny Green, Lucky Thompson, Nat Pierce, Freddie Greene, Walter Page and Count Basie as guest star. Thanks Bill, forgot that one. Jo Jones also played on most of the early-to-mid-50's Buck Clayton Jam Sessions.
  20. Here are some more 50's sessions which benefit from Jo Jones' presence: Buck Clayton: The Essential Buck Clayton (Vanguard) Vic Dickenson: The Essential Vic Dickenson (Vanguard) Zoot Sims / Bob Brookmeyer: Morning Fun (Black Lion) Sonny Stitt: New York Jazz (Verve) Nat Pierce: Kansas City Memories (Coral; recently reissued by Fresh Sound on a twofer together with other Nat Pierce sessions) Johnny Hodges: Smooth One (Verve; included in the Mosaic Box Set) Jimmy Rushing: Rushing Lullabies (Columbia)
  21. The Gibbs Contemporary albums are superb big band jazz. I have six, three on vinyl and three on CD. The last, One More Time was issued after the others and consists of tapes discovered in 1994 by Gibbs and is possibly less indispensable than the others. Joe Maini has some solo space on every one of these albums. I very much agree, this indeed is superb big band jazz. The Dream Band was an exciting, hard swinging aggregation with great soloists: among others Conte Candoli, Stu Williamson, Frank Rosolino, Med Flory, Bill Perkins, Bill Holman and of course Terry Gibbs himself. The rhythm section was driven by the one and only Mel 'The Tailor' Lewis. And with arrangements by Bill Holman, Bob Brookmeyer, Al Cohn, Marty Paich and Manny Albam you can't go wrong either. IMHO all five volumes are indispensable.
  22. René Thomas / Bobby Jaspar: Thomas Jaspar Quintet (RCA) Mel Lewis: Got 'Cha (Fresh Sound) Lou Levy Trio: A Most Musical Fella (RCA) Illinois Jacquet: 'The Kid' And 'The Brute' (Verve) Bud Freeman: Chicago / Austin High School Jazz In Hi-Fi (Mosaic) Carl Perkins: Introducing... Carl Perkins (Boplicity) Muggsy Spanier: 1944 (Classics) Martial Solal: The Complete Vogue Recordings Vol. 3 (Vogue) Jess Stacy: 1951 - 1956 (Classics)
  23. Sent you a PM re some of the Jazz Tribune twofers.
  24. Ernie Caceres IMHO is one of the few top baritone players, displaying a beautiful tone and logic and fluent lines when improvising. He can be heard on innumerable Condon sessions of the 40's. I particularly like him on "Jazz Ultimate" by Bobby Hackett / Jack Teagarden (Capitol, 1957). He plays fine on "Complete Live At the Voyager Room" by the Bobby Hackett-Bob Wilber Sextet (a Lonehill twofer) and is part of the All Star cast assembled as "Big 18" for the two RCA albums "Live Echoes Of The Swinging Bands" and "More Live Echoes Of The Swinging Bands", taking a few solos.
