  1. They are all on my list (see post #45). Al Cohn was a very busy arranger in the 50's, contributing great charts to the book of Terry Gibbs' Dream Band and the Birdland Dream Band of Maynard Ferguson, the same is true for Manny Albam. Ernie Wilkins wrote memorable charts for Count Basie, Harry James and Clark Terry as well as for his own orchestras and the Almost Big Band.
  2. You mentioned the one thing that is even more annoying than the scanty covers, namely the sound. Most of the Pablos have very poor sound - all this great performers would have deserved better recording / sound engineering. There are a lot of 50's records with way higher audio quality than a great part of the Pablo albums (e.g. Contemporary, Riverside, Prestige).
  3. Charlie Parker: A Studio Chronicle 1940-1948 (JSP, 5 cd box set)
  4. That looks like some more stuff I should get. Would you mind posting the details of all three please? MG Milt Jackson Quartet Milt Jackson (vib) Monty Alexander (p) Ray Brown (b) Mickey Roker (d) "Ronnie Scott's Club", London, England, April 23 & 24, 1982 Impressions Pablo 2310-932 Flamingo - Eleuthera - Good Bait - F.S.R. - Medley: Reggae / Later - Close Enough For Love - Captain Bill - Three Little Words Pablo 2310-944 Used To Be Jackson - The Summer Knows - Main Stem - Caravan - Take The "A" Train - Things Ain't What They Used To Be - Come Sunday - Just Squeeze Me (But Don't Tease Me) - * Milt Jackson - A London Bridge (Pablo 2310-932) * Milt Jackson - Mostly Duke (Pablo 2310-944; Fantasy OJCCD 968-2) Milt Jackson Quartet same personnel "Ronnie Scott's Club", London, England, April 28, 1982 Straight, No Chaser Pablo Live 2308-235 Blue Monk - 'Round About Midnight - In Walked Bud - Django - Think Positive - Blues For Groundhog - * Milt Jackson - Memories Of Thelonious Sphere Monk (Pablo Live 2308-235; Fantasy OJCCD 851-2) All three albums are great: terrifically swinging stuff with inspired playing by all. Milt Jackson did some more fine recordings on Pablo, I warmly recommend "Soul Fusion" (1977 with Monty Alexander), "Soul Route" (1983, with Gene Harris) and "It Don't Mean A Thing If You Can't Tap Your Foot To It" (1984, with Cedar Walton) as well as the two discs with the Count Basie Big Band. "Basie & Zoot" is superb; you actually cannot go wrong with any Zoot Sims on Pablo, IMO he did some of his best work for Pablo (check "If I'm Lucky", "For Lady Day", "Warm Tenor", "The Swinger", "I Wish I Were Twins", "Suddenly It's Spring"). Ray Bryant's Pablo albums are nice too, I have "Potpourri" and "All Blues" (both in the trio format) as well as the solo effort "Montreux '77" and do like all of them. Benny Carter's "The King" (with Milt Jackson and Tommy Flanagan) is recommended, as is the afore-mentioned "Live And Well In Japan". Tommy Flanagan's "Tokyo Recital" is a particular favorite of mine. Phineas Newborn did "Look Out! - Phineas Is Back" and "Back Home" (both recorded 1976), I like them both very much. Oscar Peterson recorded prolifically for Pablo, perhaps the best of the bunch is "The London Concert" (1978, with John Heard and Louis Bellson). Finally there are the "Solo Masterpieces" by Art Tatum, I think there is no need to introduce these recordings to the members of this forum.

  10. I am ordering from caiman through amazon.com quite often and never had any problems. The one exception was an order for a 4-disc box set of Benny Goodman V-disc recordings, which they were not able to fulfill within the given time limit. I canceled the order and got an e-mail confirmation within a few hours saying that they have canceled the order and are processing a refund.

  12. This is a great site, I am ordering more and more from them (among others "Tentatives" by René Urtreger just about a week ago).
  13. Nice list, Peter. I have 18 of the cd you listed. But then, you can produce endless lists of "overlooked recordings worth listening to", depending on what your personal preferences are and how you define "overlooked".
  14. Ralph Sutton: At Café Des Copains (Sackville) seems to be difficult to obtain, finally found a used copy at www.priceminister.com
  15. Benny Goodman: V-Disc (Collectors' Choice) 4 cd box
  16. I am a big fan of Wild Bill too. I especially like his work with Condon in the 40's and 50's. He was one of the most convincing and exciting lead players in the Chicago and Dixieland style.
  17. A batch of Fresh Sounds: Ruby Braff: Little Big Horn 1955 session with Billy Byers, Sam Margolis, Marty Napoleon, Milt Hinton, Jo Jones Maynard Ferguson: I Have But Two Horns (2 cd) 1955 octet sessions and 1955/56 small big band sessions, all arrangements by Bill Holman Joe Newman-Billy Byers Sextet: Byers' Guide 1956 album with Gene Quill, Lou Stein, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson Marty Paich: Paich-ence contains three different studio sessions: 1955 septet with Conte Candoli, Bob Enevoldsen, Bob Hardaway, Tony Rizzi, Max Bennett, Stan Levey; 1955 octet with Conte Candoli, Bob Enevoldsen, Harry Klee, Bob Cooper / Jimmy Giuffre, Jack DuLong, Joe Mondragon, Art Mardigan / Frank Capp; 1956 big band session Frank Strazzeri: Nobody Else But Me solo session from 1987
  18. The Boland twofer is highly recommended. Boland's charts are - as we know from the ones he wrote for the CBBB - always a great joy to listen to: inventive and swinging, he is creating different moods and tone colors with the inclusion of flutes, clarinets and french horns in a very effective way. Besides that, the roster of soloists guarantees top notch playing in the solo department: Benny Bailey, Kenny Wheeler, Frank Rosolino, Bobby Burgess, Tony Coe, Ronnie Scott, Sal Nistico, Sahib Shihab. Last but not least you cannot go wrong with the European rhythm team of Jean Warland and Kenny Clare. This is a must for fans of modern big bands.
  19. That is exactly the impression I get when listening to his solo recordings.
  20. The set presents on 3 cd's a compilation of radio broadcasts by the Artie Shaw Orchestra between November 1938 and November 1939. This is first rate big band swing. The accent is on hot numbers, but even the commercial sides are not too sweet thanks to the swinging band and the superb vocals of Helen Forrest. Artie Shaw's clarinet playing is outstanding as is the drumming of Cliff Leeman and George Wettling (interesting coincidence: both would later be best known for their work within dixieland contexts, especially the Condon mob). Trumpeter John Best, trombonist George Arus and tenor-player Tony Pastor provide good solos too (the latter also singing a few novelty songs). The orchestra is well rehearsed, the sections tight, and the whole band irresistibly swinging. Sound on these recordings is superb for the period, there are not many better studio recordings from this time. If you like big band swing, then this set is highly recommended.
  21. Montg.. as you have the Avid could you answer the following.. does it have the complete Honeysuckle Rose with Claytons three choruses, the Carney and Freddie Green solos.? As stated in another thread on this ( elsewhere).. The Schaap Goodman is the only CD I have ever bought that caused me to call the company and complain about it. I have had the Columbia Phil Scchaap release for several years but never have been quite happy with it: too much annoying pops and clicks for my taste. Now I bought the Avid release. Dave Bennett did a great job on this, eliminating the pops and clicks and at the same time preserving the fidelity of the music, every instrument (including the drums) can be heard clearly. This reissue can be highly recommended without any reserve. It has the complete 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, including "Sometimes I'm Happy" and "If Dreams Come True" as well as the full length version (16:41) of the Jam Session on "Honeysuckle Rose" with the complete solo by Buck Clayton and the Harry Carney and Freddie Green solos. The rest of the set contains the following albums (complete): BG In Hi-Fi (Capitol) 1954 Mr. Benny Goodman Plays Selections From 'The Benny Goodman Story' (Capitol) 1955 Date With The King, featuring Rosemary Clooney (Columbia) 1955 The Benny Goodman Story, Soundtrack (Decca) 1955
  22. Benny Goodman: The Complete Famous Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert Plus 1950's Material (Avid, 4 cd) Adam Makowicz: A Tribute To Art Tatum (WWC) Art Pepper: Straight Life (OJC) Dick Hyman / Lou Stein: Genius At Play / Solo (Audiophile) Francy Boland: Blue Flame / Red Hot / White Heat (MPS, 2 cd)
