Iron Man has so MEAN clarinet playing by Braxton. Woody is the man, of course.

Brooks' "Free Slave" is essential. Joyful and funky masterpiece. You can just see the musicians smiling, and on the last track there is at the moment when Woody Shaw eneters (after Coleman's solo) - and I imagine him jumping on stage in impatience: "Now I am gonna show you something!". When I was studying I used to put this one on while getting ready to go out in night (because it has THE GROOVE) - and I would invariably be 30 minutes late, because I just HAD to finish listening the disc till the end. I also used to do my ritual morning dance to the last track, but I'll spare you of details. Play your thing, Roy!

Ornette Coleman at the Carnegie Hall this Sunday.
Д.Д. replied to Dmitry's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
How tall is Ornette? I always thought he was 1m90 at least - but it does not look so... -
John, I lived in NYC. NYC is expensive, but definitely not because of the music. Concert at Tonic normally costs $10-20. CBGB marathon jam sessions (I remember one during which I saw - and I came when it all already long started and left well before the end - Daniel Carter trio, John Abercrombie quartet, Dom Minisi trio, Roy Campvell/Dave Douglas band) $10.
-
Tony, read this DMG excerpt on Visions festival. Now thinking how I can move to NYC.

Friends, got some info on upcoming Braxton " 23 Standards" 4-CD set on Leo: Braxton - reeds Kevin O'Neal - guitar Kevin Norton - percussion Andy Eulau - bass Recorded live in 2003. Limited edition of 1000 copies.
-
Yes, that was him. ------------------------------------------- John, I didn't know you have THAT much Brötzmann. So you say März Combo is nice? I am intrigued because it has two guitarists (including Caspar Brötzmann - very talented guy). I think there is also a DLAD disc with Roy Campbell instead of Kondo, but IMO Campbell is much less interesting than Kondo, so I am not in a hurry to get thiis one. -------------------------------------------- Tony, our delightfully unpredictable themusicresource should have many FMP releases relatively cheap.

An M.V.P., I'd say. Mentor in Violence Prevention? Hmmm....
-
Well, Tony, you expected it when you started the thread, didn't you?
-
Music-wise this is a great great disc, but some of the spoken words sections are extremely annoying IMO.
-
Just sound, you know. Just any sound in itself in the right time, even without any specific context can be beautiful. At least that's the way I am interested in seeing it now.

Riding the eai wave, listened to nperign / Günter Müller release "More Gloom, More Light" (on Rossbin Records). Good stuff. nperign is Greg kelley on trumpet and Bhob Riney on saxophones; Müller handles percussion and electronics. nperign guys mostly create breathing/clicking sounds of various level of unglyness, and Müller mostly plays with drone sounds. Might sound like something not particularly exciting, but you do get drawn in since it all has amazing focus -everything is where itis supposed to be when it is supposed to be, and in the light of my recent interest in pure sound, I find the whole listening very rewarding.

ubu is sending me a copy. Looking forward!

I don't, but it seems some think her intonation sucks. NOT ME THOUGH! Don't you mistake me for "some"! Or you will be immediately de-capitated by my royal troops! ubu I am deifinitely this very some. Sheila Jordan ruins this Rudd disc for me (and I am not a vocal-hater in general, as other some here). I will listen to it again (I bumped upon this CD recently, so why not listen to it - who knows when I find it next time?).
-
I don't. Since the box is early '90s remastering, I thought I would get individual albums in better-sounding versions. The only Atalantic Ornette disc I have is This is Our Music (reissued on Sepiatone a couple of years ago; very nice sound... where is Sepiatone btw - they started off strong reissuing Ornette and Alice Coltrane Warner sides two years ago, but don't seem to have done anythng since then) and shitty-sounding Swiss reissue of Free Jazz.

It's OK, we can easily replace it - I haven't lost any enthusiasm for Italian jazz. As I said, we can always ask Marco, and he will come back with five pages of essential Italian improv recordings for beginners. I rememebr he insistently recommended Giorgio Pacorig "My Mind Is on the Table". I haven't heard it, but I trust Marco's judgement. Tony, you also have We Did It set, as far as I remember? What's your opinion? I feel it has some weak moments (the "rock" medley, and I think TOnoni's drums are a bit too prominent (well, he is a leader), but there are a lot of moments of total brilliance.
-
Well, the thread Tony is referring to was severely circumsized after the AAJ board crash, so Marco's recommendations were lost. But it's OK, you can send him an e-mail (Marco runs the jazzos.com website) and he will give you all the recommendations you need and more.

I'll take Pavone, Leo Smith and Emanem in case these are not promos or cut-outs, and if OBIs are there.

He-he, here is some more for you John (and others of course): European Wrner has been reissuing Atlantic sides recently. Among them Ornette Coleman's "Ornette!" (I think this one was available as strange two-fer on Collectibles only) and "Twins" (this one seems to have been not avialable on CD) and a lot of other stuff (MFQ, Mingus, Coltrane, etc.). All available at budget prices from amazon.fr and amazon.de (this one for example: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...5460409-9124811 ). These are in jewel cases (not in digipacks as mid-'90s "swiss" remasters with horrendous sound). I am getting a first batch soon, and will report on the sound quality... Hey, looked through the board and found a thread on these Warner reissues: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5000 ... confuding stuff... in any case, I am getting some of those soon, so I might be able to clarify something...

You know what, I thik I will order some more Italian jazz as well. Just as a sign of my solidarity with you.
-
Does Rhames really sound very much like Train (a comment I've repeatedly read eleswhere)?
-
and most of it is quite expensive to obtain over here. I have never heard of Negri. Any album in particular that you recommend? If you like clever funk, go for So Funky!, if you want an excellent duo with a drumer go for Squarci (sells for €6.20 at jazzos).
-
Good thing about the Festival disc is that it it is not really and IIO (except for a couple of pieces), but different combinations of musicians form the Orchestra - solos (Eugenio Colombo is the man!!), duos, trios, etc., allowing individual musicians to display their talents and concepts better than within IIO framework. Oh, and I remember one more that absolutelys has to be obtained by evrybody on The Rat: Stefano Maltese (reeds) Evan Parker (honorable Italian, reeds) Keith Tippett (equally honorable Italian, piano) Antonio Moncada (percussion) Double Mirror (Splasc(H)).
-
Hey, so you are not such a neophyte in Italian music! In any case, check out Mauro Negri, my favorite clarinetist (together with John Carter), who also plays some mean alto. The only "problem" with Italian music is that once you start with it, you need to get more - and there is A LOT of good stuff. It's an absolute shame that even among the conosseurs of improv music Italian musicians are totally unknown.
