because the tastes of the people on this thread seem generally to be rooted in Euro free improv, or US artists following in their footsteps, and what the Tokyo crew do is a decidedly different thing. I like what Tokyo crew is doing.

talking about exceptional vocalists, have you heard Sainkho Namchulak?

Jon, it was solo and duo the same night. Solo was indeed mainly the same wave with very little variation (and even that could have stemmed from my head movements ). Let me quote myself:

well, there are a few categories, sometimes it's just that I know they could have been even better if the musicians had taken my suggestions (Bits, Bots and Signs, the Dorner/Drumm), sometimes it just didn't work as "magically" as I'd hoped, and then there are some of the earliest ones before I really established an aesthetic. there's nothing in the catalog I'm even slightly embarrassed about, though, especially considering I had pretty much no contacts in this world when I started in 1998, I was just a hardcore fan like pretty much everyone reading this now. but if I had to go back and retroactively delete a couple of titles, I'd probably go with the Earl Howard/Denman Maroney and the Dean Roberts/Werner Dafeldecker. not that either of them is bad, and Earl ended up being my mastering engineer and a key part of my label, but that one has solo tracks as well as duos, I haven't put out anything solo since (that was the first disc I commissioned), and the Dean/Werner disc was their first meeting, we all got a little too excited and we should have waited a year or so for them to gel, I think. also, I try to keep Erst a bit broader than my own taste, specifically with the Marcus Schmickler records and a couple of others. those aren't really my personal faves, but for some people, they're the best part of the catalog. Thanks for candid response - I appreciate your being not too bound by the internal politics of the tight imporvised music world. And well, Lehn/Schmickler's "Bart" is one of my favorite Erstwhile releases, of course ... here, perfect example, I love schnee_live and am not so crazy about the Fuhler/Prins disc. I'd say file under S. There are some sounds I just like, nearly regardless of the context. Fuhler/Prins disc is full of these sounds - all these low-end blips and clicks and hiss. And, well, I do like the ideas as well. Fuhler/Prins "The Flirts" and Drumm/Tétreault "Particles and Smears" have some of my favorite sounds in Erstwhile catalog. At the same time, there are sounds I just cannot appreciate, to the point that I don't care whether there are any profound ideas undelying - Sachiko M's sine waves would be one example (although, having seen her live, I frankly somewhat doubt the ideas component either).

of course, most of any genre is crap. I'd like to hear your specifics regarding Erstwhile, though. jon, would be curious to hear what your least-favorite Erstwhile releases are ("insider" diplomacy permitting...) As for my recent Erstwhile exporations, I enjoyed immencesly Cor Fuhler / Gert Jan-Princ "The Flirts", while Burkhard Stangl / Christof Kurzmann "schnee_live" I found boring (and I liked "Schnee"). Where shold I file the schnee discs - in K or S, btw?

I have two SOFA releases. I listened only once to each, but both left very positive impression: Ingar Zach - "Percussion Music" No Spaghetti Edition - "Real Time Satellite Data" I would really need to listen to them at least one more time to add anythng more specific.
  7. Bleu Regard is issuing a '84 concert recording of Charles Tyler soon. I assume we'll see a complete ESP recordings Charles Tyler set at some point.

This is my second-favorite CD if Gebbia (after you-know-what) - and I have a lot of Gebbia, as you might guess. I think the trio shows some impressive interplay, Gebbia is the most melodic (I don't think he plays soprano much on other records - and he is excellent on soprano), and the samples/electronics is hilarious, really adding a lot to the overall slightly absurd feeling. The melody of the first track is mesmerizing. I think this CD is OOP now, so I would recommend getting it asap (it was a available at 50% discout at jazzos.com for a long time - possibly still is).

Got a Leo press release. Five new releases (all look interesting), including a double CD of Joelle Leandre. I am particularly intrigued by the Frank Gratkowsky (clarinets) – Thomas Lehn (analogue synthesizer) – Melvyn Poore (tuba, euphonium) release.

Having attended the Ochs - Masaoka - Lee concert that plain sucked all the way, I decided I'll check out this What We Live: "Especially the Traveler Tomorrow" (Metalanguage, 2002) CD. What We Live is Lawrence Ochs on tenor and sopranino saxophones, Lisle Ellis on bass and Donald Robinson on drums. The disc is excellent! Ochs is a monster on both saxophones (tenor, in particular), Ellis and Robinson are a perfect rhythm section (with Robinson really dancing on drums). This is the third What We Live disc I hear, and I think this is their best one. Recorded live, excellent sound.

Another CDBaby find: Daniel Carter, Morgan Craft, Eric Eigner. Samples sound not bad at all.

This does look promising. Do you have many others from 577? I have two - Astonishment - a duo of Carter and Ughi, and it is very good - really opened my eyes on Carter. Sparce playing with a lot of space, occasioanlly quite lyrical. Unfortunately, Ughi chooses to vocalise on a couple of tracks, and it does not contribute much to the music. Still good stuff. You can check the samples out at CD Baby and at 577 records page. Another one is trio Ughi-Carter-Swell. It is more busy, and less original, IMO, but still very strong. Samples.

I wouldn't bother much with critical opinion. Particularly when something is declared an indisputable classics. I like this set too. I also think highly of the duo with Tatsi Aoki recently released on Southside. The Pi discs are OK, I much prefer Mitchell's non-AEoC work these days. (And my opinions are in no way influenced by where I think they stand in comparison to Sound.) I'll go back to this set one day. My first impression was of Mitchell just going through the motions, regardless of the instrument. And with extremely ugly alto sound, IMO. But sure, he can still play. ------------------------------ New release on 577 Records: The Dream Daniel Carter William Parker Federico Ughi I am boycotting everythign with William Parker, but Carter/Ughi is an excellent combination. -------------------------------- Bleu Regard seems to be releasing a Charles Tyler recoridng from 1984. -------------------------------- New VHF (Graham Halliwell (alto saxophone) - Simon H. Fell (double bass) - Simon Vincent (electronics, percussion)) release on Bruce's Fingers. I thought the VHF release on Erstwhile was great, so I will definitely pick this one up as well. -------------------------------- Whoa! Last time I checked the Experimental musical research page they had five or six 3" releaes - now there are 30, including several full-length CDs. Many surely look tasty (Fuchs / Turetzky duo ). --------------------------------- New Foghorn release: Bruise with Derek Bailey Derek Bailey: electric guitar Tony Bevan: bass saxophones Orphy Robinson: steel drum, marimbula, percussion, electronics, trumpet John Edwards: double bass Ashley Wales: soundscapes & electronics Mark Sanders: drums & percussion Recorded live at the 291 Gallery I still don't have any Foghorn releases - waiting for Mr. Bevan to come to senses and decrease the prices on his CDs. -------------------- Jazzland: new Atomic release. -------------------- Might have been mentioned, but worth repeating: new release on Emouvance: Next to you J. McPhee D. Lazro R. Boni C. Tchamitchian Oh yes.

Why, I always listen to music with fresh bananas in my ears. Helps smoothen the rough edges, on CIMP releases, in particular. Shall I try something else? Or other banana brand?

You can say what ever you want about this record (one of the master piece of TAYLOR recordings). But one thing who's sure, it's his incredible sound quality. At least, if you take the bannanas from your ears, you could hear (I hope) the indisputable value that sound quality brings to this record. As mentioned, I do nto have the disc, so cannot add my authoritative and definitive opinion, but could it be that David refers to older edition of the album, not the remaster released last year:

I wouldn't give up a chance to see Roscoe Mitchell live. Especially when he is on stage with Moye and Jarman! Well, I skipped - went to a fashion show instead. The main reason I would go see AEoC is not Mitchell or Jarman. It's Moye. Silly boy. Don't like fashion shows, Chuck? Guess not. Didn't know that was your goal. Chuck, not considering years of your friendship for a minute - you seriously think Mitchell's recent work (like his 3-CD soloset) is on par with what he did 30 (or even 15) years ago? I assume you heard Jarman play recently - casting the glorius past and sentementality aside - would you say this is something worth hearing live?

I would. Especially if the tickets were not too expensive. I hope to catch some of that on the radio later tonight... I guess I could tell you around midnight I saw them live three years ago (with Malachi then), and it was so-so. And Chris Potter is opening... I think I will skip. I'll go see Ochs-Masaoka-Lee tomorrow, though (15-minute ride form my place ).
