  1. Yes. "prog-rock" I thought you said you were talking about Styx?
  2. STYX! Eeyoowww. So that's the conversation that Chuck, Randy, Eric and I "missed". It was good to meet you, Al.
  3. Jim, I just sent you an e-mail. Bill
  4. I use Firefox browser and Thunderbird for email. I have no problems with pop-ups, worms, virii... And the tab browsing is very addictive.
  5. I'm in and bringing at least one other, not counting Uncle Skid. Well, Uncle Skid can count its just that I wasn't counting him when I said I was bringing at least one other person. I am bringing Uncle Skid but I wasn't counting him when I said I'd be bring at least one other person. Wait, I mean.... nevermind. I will be there, you can count on that.
  6. My name is Bill and I'm a coffee-aholic. My last cup of coffee for the day is at bedtime. Quite often the empty cup spends the night on my bed side stand. The day starts with an expresso followed by a crema on the way to work. Four or five 20 ounce mugs at work. A couple of cremas while making and eating dinner. A cappacino while practicing and one more to mellow out the day with my wife.
  7. I have indeed returned from the Jazz workshop. The shirts did not seem to attract much attention. OTOH I did get to hear and play lots of good music.
  8. Kenny Werner "Unprotected Music" Kenny Werner "Form and Fantasy" Dave Liebman "Return of the Tenor" plus 10 more I saw Dave Liebman perform Coltrane's Africa with some of the faculty at the Jazz Workshop Thursday night. Rufus Reid and Lynn Seaton on bass, Steve Davis and John Reily on drums, David Hazeltine on piano, three saxes (don't remember who), Dave Stryker on banjo. One of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard in my life.
  9. June 28 & 29. 70% off F4OD7
  10. I just tried that last night. Does that make it sound better Bill or use less space? I never got round to understading the reason for it? Any light shined here in would suffice . The other thing was which vbr to use as there are many! VBR, or variable bitrate, adjusts the bitrate to what is needed. Some passages will not need a very high bitrate to produce good results. Others do. You can adjust the minimum and maximum bitrates allowed. It's to reduce file size. Haven't got a clue what the different VBR settings in CDex do, must be different algorhithms. I use the default one, as I'm a lazy bastard. I should have read all the way to the end before I answered. You beat me to it.

The other thing was which vbr to use as there are many! The theory is that the musically "dense" sections get recorded at a higher bit rate than the musically "sparce" sections. It works better for me because I would record everything at the highest bit rate possible and then I can't get as many on my MP3 player.
  12. Bextra, ten milligrams a day, has changed my life
  13. I use CDEX at VBR.
  14. I admit that I have not done any serious comparsion between SACD and any other format. While I agree that LP can be superior to CD, I suppose that the "crappy" CD sound often is enough for me - that is, with my preferences and equipment. You may have a point, since I think under the right conditions not only die-hard audiophiles are able to distinguish CD sound from LP sound, for example. The problem seems to be that not many care about it. Besides, a cheap turntable does not necessarily sound good - I believe that millions of people nevertheless experienced an improvement when they switched from an entry-level turntable to an entry-level CD player. I think most people thought (think) that CD is superior because it never develops those pops and crackles you get when you don't care properly for the media. SACD is lovely. But they don't play in my car.

  16. Do you think that's because our expectations have become so low due to the crappy sound quality from CDs? 44K is certainly not great either. Compare an SACD or an LP to a CD. On the other hand, MP3s sound fine in the car and they let me take 300 albums to work on my Archos.
  17. Randy, Rick Hicks, Uncle Skid and I were talking about your Father last week. I didn't know that he was a Jazz musician as well. Seems it definately runs in the family!
  18. The shirts there are built for the Jazz Workshop. I put prices there so if anyone REALLY needs one quickly they could grab them. The prices listed are $3.00 above cost which I will pass on to Jim should anyone choose to buy one. I believe that the "plan" is for Jim to setup his own CafePress account and make many of the designs available.
  19. I agree with Joe. (I can't believe I just said that. )
  20. Jim et. al. need to bless the final design(s) it is after all their logo that we'll be sporting. I'm certain, however, that as long as the logo is faithfully reproduced Jim will want folks to have what they like best. My plan was to submit the winning design to my CafePress account as get shirts for Skid and me ASAP since time is running short (are you practicing tonight Uncle Skid?). Then I was going to offer Jim as much help as he wants/needs to get the CafePress stuff setup (that way checks get to him without passing through my books). Then the ordering would be open to everyone. My estimate is that people could start ordering by next Monday and be sporting cool new Big O duds by the following weekend. So, after we decide I will need graphics 8"x10" or 10"x8" 100-300 DPI jpg or png. In fact nothing stops you from emailing them to me now if you feel your design is "finished." Jim?
  21. With that said, there is nothing that stops us from selecting more than one design. I would recommend that we limit it to two. Everyone can purchase as many of each as they wish.
  22. I would ask that everyone go back and read the first post in this thread. I am HUGELY in favor of Organissimo selling the shirts, I was in fact the guy that first suggested it to Jim. However, the first priority is for Uncle Skid and me to be able to convey to 400+ jazz fans that this forum is the place where cool folks gather to discuss Jazz. Getting some subset of those 400+ people visiting here has a lot of advantages for all of us. The effective design will let people know, without interaction from us, that this is the place they want to come to for Jazz conversation.
  23. No problem -- I'll be the first to admit I don't have a clue when it comes to things like that. I'm just hoping that someone can work in an aesthetically pleasing picture of Geddy Lee somewhere on that shirt. While I'm fully in favor of a bassist appearing on the shirt Geddy Lee was not the bassist I had in mind!
