  1. Pink Floyd, MC5, The Frost, The Mother of Invention
  2. I got a sneak listen to their CD that comes out today. I'm picking it up tonight.
  3. Since I was the whiney, slow guy last time, I thought I'd mention that the CDs arrived today . I'm on track 7 of disc 1 right now. HEY!! EVERYBODY QUIET!!!! BASS SOLO! My wife hates it when I do that in the car.
  4. I've been aware of it for a while and watching for it to come out either locally or on DVD. I became aware of them when I was a freshman in high school (1967). The things that you love at that age never really go away. When I got divorced ~15 years ago I did the usual stuff that freshly divorced people do, including the topic of this thread and getting CDs of the music that I listened to in high school. MC5, The Frost, Zappa, Iggy I never listen to rock anymore except when that mood comes along and then its full volume "Human Being Lawnmower", "Sweet Jane", "First Day of May" .... Gawd, I hope my kids don't read this forum
  5. ... and, on an entirely different note: MC5 kicks out the jams, motherfuckers! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still get goosebumps when I hear: "...and I want to know.. Are you Ready to testify? I give You a testimonial...the MC5" or: "Just put that mic in my hand and let me Kick Out The Jams" or: "Starts out with Brother Wayne Kramer, Brother Wayne Kramer" This and Zappa was 95% of what I listened to in High School. Has anybody else listened to Wayne Kramer's recent stuff?
  6. The scary thing is that he is a real live "elected" send-your-butt to prison judge. He got his masters in psychology before changing his mind an getting a JD.
  7. I made this point in a pychology class that was taught by a local judge. He got irate with me claiming that I was wrong it goesn't feel good people only do it to escape their problems in life. You can't keep people from using them by lying to them about it.
  8. I got a gig a couple of years ago playing CCR tunes. I didn't know any of them so I bought a CD. The cover art was right, the silk screen on the CD was right. The CD contained some strange electronical thing. The first track's lyrics were, " |: Muthaf*ka in da house.....Cheap. :| " I don't get it. All of the rest of the lyrics are in German. I still have it. I bet its a collector's piece. I'll trade ya for the Paul Chambers & Wynton Kelly Mosaic
  9. The Blue Mitchell arrived today. Number 3758.
  10. So I either got the last one or I'll get a nice letter explaining that I can't have it after all.
  11. Not your fault, I'm the guy that lives down the dirt road in between the small city and the smaller town. I'm blaming my wife, she's the one that wanted the big yard with limited neighbors. Don't tell her I said that.
  12. Considering it takes much longer to get a CD into the remote regions of Michigan than over the drink we should consider a common discussion start date regardless of when we get the discs, to give everybody an equal chance. Most of the problem for me is fact that I have a Muskegon address but I don't live in Muskegon and my mail doesn't come out of the Muskegon Post Office (I don't think I've even seen the word Muskegon appear that many times in a sentence before ). Uncle Skid lives 20 minutes away, also has a Muskegon address but doesn't live in Muskegon and consistantly gets things like Blue Note catalogs and stuff at least a day before I do because his mail does come out of the Muskegon Post Office. It would be nicer (for me) if the discussion wasn't on page 3 the day my CD arrives.
  13. Nope, that's homemade (and not very well I might add). I've been toying with the idea of putting it on a T-shirt. I like the bumpersticker idea as well. One of these days! I'd buy one. A t-shirt not a bumper sticker. Uncle Skid keeps threatening to paste a soccer ball on my vehicle (all real musicians drive red mini-vans, red cuz we're cool and minivans for hauling all the stuff). Have you thought about Cafe Press? No out of pocket expenses, they handle everything. I sell Bass Clef stuff, well sell is the wrong word since I intentionally make no profit at it. I was looking for stuff with a bass clef on it and found bassically nothing. So I set up a cafe press shop with t-shirts and stuff with bass clefs on them. Surprisingly I've had over 100 people buy the stuff. You can set it up to make a profit if you want, I chose not to because I just wanted a decent t-shirt and thought someone else might enjoy it as well.
  14. I'm probably going to make a fool of myself by posting this without reading the previous posts first. With that said, I'm also not going to try to identify any of the songs. I'm simply going to transfer my impressions as I listen. I'm sitting down with it right now and this is actually my second time through. The previous was in the car and it took several trips around town to get through it I hate the fact that the discussion on both this one and the last started about a week before I got the CD. Track 1 Its got to be a movie theme of some sort. 3:20 is that a motorcycle in the background? Big band stuff doesn't really appeal to me. Track 2 I like the bassist, he's not afraid of getting dizzy on the high end of the neck. Too bad it turned latin. At 2 minutes in I convinced that its a movie theme too. Track 3 More big band. I like bassists that use the whole neck. If I close my eyes I can see the closing credits of the movie. Track 4 I know that I know this one. What is it?!? Jeez, I hate that. WHAT IS IT? I definitely know the bassist. I should recognize the horn player. This is my kind of thing. I really enjoyed this one. Small combo. Track 5 I liked this one but not enough to buy it. Track 6 Anything that starts with this much bass has got to be good. No chordal instrument? Track 7 Same bass tone as the last song. Still no one person playing chords. Is the bassist Rufus Reid? Track 8 Pass Track 9 Pass Track 10 Latin, Big Band, and Vocals. Pass. Voice reminds me of Jack Bruce. Track 11 Isn't this still track 10? Track 12 Track 13 Track 14 Perfect pitch is the ability to throw a banjo in a dumpster and have it hit an accordian. That is without doubt the finest jazz accordion playing I've ever heard and I typed that with a straight face. Track 15 He nearly lost me during that 1 minute rubato intro. There's that accordion again. Track 16 This feels like an extended theme from a '60s TV show. Track 17 Both of my greyhounds hated this one. I've never seen them react to music this way before and they've been subjected to a lot of different music. Track 18 No opinion Track 19 Starting at about 1:30 this becomes a good example of the kind of stuff I like. Track 20 My wife thinks that its James Moody. Maybe.
  15. Charles Mingus and Ray Brown every day. Just like your vitamins. The Mosaic Select #5 Paul Chambers is pretty much stuck in the car CD player. I recently picked up a couple of Ellington DVDs that have occupied all of my TV time.
  16. Did you ever wonder about those smileys? Smileys
  17. I used to have to be in Grand Rapids every Saturday morning at 8:00 am and was able to catch your show on the way there and Marion MacPartland on the way back home. I don't miss the 1.5 hour round trip for an hour session but I do miss my time with you and Marion.
  18. I finally caved in and just ordered the Blue Mitchell set. Youse guys are all responsible for this!
  19. I've never bought a CD at WalMart/K-Mart/Target/... But I do buy them from Amazon and CDUniverse .... as well as Schuler's (pretty good coffee there too). I'd be happy to from a local record store if they had a decent selection of jazz and classical and if I don't have to shout over the heavy metal / rap to ask the clerk a question.
  20. I'd like to hear your position.
  21. I'm teaching until 9:00
  22. I just spoke to Derico Watson, He's just ended his tour with Victor Wooten and is coming home to Muskegon. The weekend of March 12 he will be at Pints & Quarts. He says that the line-up on Friday night isn't set yet but on Sunday he will be there with Dave Spring and Kurt Ellenberger. Dave Spring is an awesome bassist and Dave speaks highly of Kurt Ellenberger.
  23. Seriously! That ain't funny!
  24. Don't even joke about running out of coffee
  25. I got my check today ! $13.86 Now what CD do I buy?
