  1. Thank you Brownie for your quick reply.
  2. A new set with "The Original Chet Baker & Gerry Mulligan Quartet, Complete Recordings" was recently released by the Spanish label Disconforme. Do you have any idea if it is the same material that was included in the OOP Mosaic sets of Chet?
  3. Given that Bechet spent so much time in France, such a set would be really nice to have. Too bad it is oop. Perhaps we should start lobbying Mosaic for a set -- something like their Django set.
  4. If I remember correctly, Vouge (France) issued app 10 years ago a set of 8 CDs with his complete recordings for the label. Of course it is OOP, but I hope one day I'll put my hands on it.
  5. "Hollywood All-Star Sessions" is a great set. I like specially the sessions with Sonny Stitt. In general, Art Pepper was such a great artist that you can’t go wrong with him.
  6. Thank you for the rec DrJ. I'll look for it.
  7. Mr. Beautiful is of course George Cables. This is how the great Art Pepper used to introduce him when they played together. Cables is a great pianist. His beautiful playing is another reason to listen to Art Pepper's recordings on Galaxy. I was so impressed from his playing that I bought two of his CDs: Shared Secrets and Cables' Vision. To be honest, I am afraid my English is not good enough to express my disappointment. The right definition to what cables recorded is elevator's music combined with light fusion. Not what I expected from him. Maybe Mr. Cables is at his best when he plays solo or in a trio format, like he recorded for Steeplechase. Any comments or recommendations???

    Geri Allen

    Thanks Jazzbo.

    Geri Allen

What I am looking for is Allen's recording with Woody Shaw for Blue Note: Bemsha Swing. Have you ever listened to this CD? Any opinion???
  10. Hi Saxophone__Vagina, Bix and Tram is also a very good set (if you like the old jazz).
  11. Leeway, The Mosaic set is excellent. I am not familiar with the Proper set and I don’t know what material is included in this set but from my experience with them I know that usually the sound is very good and their booklets are very nice. If you are not familiar with Stitt at all you better start with his recordings for Prestige.
  12. Thanks for your reply birksworks. If we agree on Myra lets talk about Geri. Please give another listen to Geri's recordings with Haden and Motian: Segments and their recording at the V.V. If you don’t hear any similarities between her playing and Crispell's playing, than I come to a conclusion that it is only my sick imagination…..
  13. I absolutely agree.
  14. For me the most identifiable jazz composers are Monk and of course M I N G U S!!!
  15. During the last few weeks I’ve been listening a lot to Geri Allen’s CDs. Since I am also a fan of Marilyn Crispell, I have the impression that Allen was deeply influenced by Crispell. The same impression I get when I listen to Myra Melford’s recordings from the early 90’s. Do you agree with me or I am the only one who has this feeling???

    Geri Allen

Another great trio recording by Geri Allen is *Segments*, with Haden & Motian. During the 80's they collaborated frequently and this reissue is one of the results of their collaboration. A very impressive performance of *La Pasionaria* that you all know from the LMO recordings (The Ballad of the Fallen). If you consider yourself as Geri's fans you must listen to it.
  17. I think *Live in Seattle* is a much better album than *OM*. *OM* is the only album from Coltrane's last years I can't listen to.

    Geri Allen

I am another Allen fan. I find her first album, *The Printmakers* as one of her best. A trio with Andrew Cyrille & Anthony Cox. One of the best free improvisation I have ever heard.
  19. Earl Hines is a great pianist and when he plays solo he sounds better than with a group. Sometimes he plays Ellington much better than Ellington himself. His interpretation of *The Shepherd* is beautiful.
