third Dexter Gordon box-set
MartyJazz replied to Vincent, Paris's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Jim S. Can you expound on the "problems" that you say Moody presented at the POWER session(s), problems that you statle led to his "dismissal" from a follow-up session? I found that mention very curious. On a side note, I just want to add my congrats on a very well written review of this box set. A very fine read. -
third Dexter Gordon box-set
MartyJazz replied to Vincent, Paris's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Lon: I'm afraid Mr. Sangrey is playing with you somewhat. I'm reading the 2nd page of his thoroughly engaging review and I quote this one sentence paragraph: "The availability of all of these outstanding dates" - and at this point, Jim is only referring to THE TOWER OF POWER, MORE POWER, THE PANTHER, THE JUMPIN' BLUES and THE CHASE - "in a single set augmented by 14 previously unreleased performances, all of them worthy and revealing, is reason enough for any serious fan and/or student of the music to add this box to their collection." So the question is, do you consider yourself to be a serious fan of the music? Obviously, we (certainly, I include myself) have to shell out for this box (eventually, if not this minute). -

Rooster's official "BFT #25" sign-up thread
MartyJazz replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Speak for yourself. I'm in couw's camp. It's been over 3 weeks since King Ubu posted his answers to BFT #24. #25 should be on the last lap by now instead of there being a no show at the starting gate. It's not fair to the regular subscribers to this particular forum much less those of us waiting patiently for our turn to host a BFT. -
I have the 2 disc Braxton set above which is simply titled IN THE TRADITION. It was released in 1991.

Artie Shaw's Mosaic collection
MartyJazz replied to Hiptobird's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed the article. As for calling himself an "80% loser", again I concur with Gunther Schuller's assessment of Shaw in his fabulous book, THE SWING ERA, "methinks he protests too much". He was quite certain of his greatness. -
The least you can do is spell his name right. Jaret Baseball certainly is a funny game. One pitcher gets a win by throwing barely 50% of his pitches over the plate. The other one sails along, makes two mistakes, and gets beat. And lets not forget the pathetic home plate umpire, who gave Wright both of his punchouts on pitches that were at least six inches to a foot inside. Hey, if it means anything to you, I thought Schilling was by far the superior pitcher. He just ran out of gas, understandable considering he has been recuperating from ankle surgery for some time. Just wanted to bust some Red Sox chops. Complaining about umpire strike calls??!!. That's not worthy of you, Dan. As for my spelling, I did realize afterwards that I had Wright's first name wrong, but was just a bit lazy to do an edit. I'll leave it to the perfectionists among us to do that. Speaking of perfectionist, as in perfect game, Randy goes tonight. Good luck ( )
