I have by what is now a long OOP CD on the French Arco label. Titled "Punjab", it is a live date, November '86, led by Joe Henderson in which the rhythm section consists entirely of women: Renee Rosnes, Marlene Rosenberg and Sylvia Quenca. Offhand, I believe Rosnes' first name on the CD is listed as Irene. I'll go fish it out and give it a listen within the next day or two.

I like that. Well better to be nouveau riche than not be "riche" at all. As far as Yanks pitching goes. The do look a bit sharper yes. That's what a $200 Million Dollar pay roll will do for you I guess. For that money I would expect them to win the World Series, the Super Bowl and solve the crisis in Iraq. I'll settle for the World Series.
-
Well, I guess it was to be expected that we heard nothing from the Sox fans from Sunday night through this morning. Finally a win and now their nouveau riche supporters are out and about again. Meanwhile, between Randy, Pavano and Mussina, our starting pitchers are looking mucho better than yours, at least for now. (Admittedly, Mariano is cause for concern).

Excuse me for coming late to this thread. In any event, while I cannot recommend a definitive Stubblefield performance, I wonder whether you've checked out any of the Fort Apache Band recordings where he is prominently featured.

Inmate, Warden's Wife Found 10 Years Later
MartyJazz replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It used to be a line in a sexual fantasy, as in, "my wife and I like to role play occasionally". "Oh yeah, like how?" "Well tonight, we're doing escaped prisoner and the warden's wife." Truth is stranger than......... -
If you get king size enjoyment out of listening to them and there was no way you could have copped the music elsewhere, then it was worth a king size price if not a king's ransom. I don't have those sets but I'll wager that I do have most of the music on LP (most likely) and CD (less so). Good enough for me. Most importantly, enjoy them.

Didn't you put it up for sale in the "Offering & Looking For" section? Was it a dupe or what?

I recall reading many years ago J.C. Thomas' biog of Trane - I think it was the first one done of Trane - wherein the author discusses a late '60s scheduled double bill of Monk and Trane. In any event, Trane's sidemen - this was the Pharoah edition, I believe - were late showing up (if they did at all) due to inclement weather. As a result Trane sat in with Monk. I certainly don't think that Carnegie Hall was the venue, more like some place in the midwest, but other than the 5 Spot material, the article posted above is the only other time I've heard of these JazzBigs getting together. Exciting news, if true.

I've met fellow southeast Floridians: David Gartner (dsgtrane) whom I knew before I became an Org subscriber Dan Gould (only 7 miles away and very adept at transferring private open reel tape broadcasts to CD-Rs on the PC) Evan Marks (Bright Moments) at a concert in Fort Lauderdale a year or so ago. I've also met: Jeff Krow (jazzkrow) and wife in Portland, OR when we visited the northwest this past summer and they gave us a wonderful tour around their city. Jack Woker (stereojack) at his jazz CD/record shop, Stereo Jack's, in Cambridge, MA, when we visited our Harvard student nephew a couple of years ago. Also, Michael Weiss, a wonderful pianist, is a long time friend from when my wife and I lived in the same apartment building as he in Brooklyn many years ago. Hope to meet more as it's always a treat.

I hear what you're saying, but I did cut loose a KG album (was it "Simply Said" ? I can't remember) because I thought it was quite a step down for him and it did frequently evoke a repugnance in me that I normally associate with smooth jazz. I have and like "Black Hope", "Triology" and "Pursuance" and I really dug KG when I saw him perform with Roy's Birds of a Feather band back in late '02. Again, the contributor above may have only heard music that at least one critic has associated with being "smooth" as per the following excerpt from a review in the AMG guide of KG's album "Happy Folks": "As on his previous album, Simply Said, he employed Marcus Miller on a selective basis as an electric bassist, also promoting Miller to co-producer. Miller, who knew his way around contemporary jazz, helped turn the opening track, "Song for DiFang," into the kind of number that potentially could be played on smooth jazz radio stations. And those stations probably also would feel at home with the title track, slotted second in the album's sequence, which featured vocals by Jean Norris. Indeed, if you stopped listening there, you'd classify Happy People as a contemporary jazz album." This could all be due to the possibility that one man's R&B/Funk can be another man's example of "smooth".

I've got a vinyl of this and the CD. But that's me...dupes all over the place.

What's a "mong"?
-
Hey thanks a lot. I enjoyed reading the material and imagining him delivering it. Extremely likeable on stage. I'm really sorry he's gone.
-
Oh, no!!!! I really dug him a lot. Really sad news. How and why?

Having recently received a CD copy of Stanley Cowell's BRILLIANT CIRCLES (Black Lion), I was very disappointed in that the infrequently recorded tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington sounded like he was playing in a closet a couple of studios away. So I took out my LP copy (Freedom Polydor) and heard it the way it should sound.

I'm not an Ella completist but I do have quite a few CDs by her, all from her glory years with Verve. Since this one is arranged & conducted by Riddle, I'm afraid that I'll have to get this one too.
