  2. well then, you're hearing it from me. on record, and especially live, i hear rollins' influence in lovano's phrasing and the way he approaches standards. of course, i also hear the mark of coleman hawkins (maybe more so than ben webster), who had a considerable influence on sonny. ← Being influenced by someone and sounding like someone can be two different things. To say that Lovano has been influenced by Rollins is not saying much because practically every modern saxophonist has been influenced by Coltrane &/or Rollins. For example, I can hear Rollins' influence in the playing of Clifford Jordan, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis and even Archie Shepp but none of them sound like Rollins to me. In the same way, Lovano doesn't sound at all like Rollins to my ears no matter even if Newk is his main influence which I don't believe he is in any event.
  3. I find Lovano to be uneven but I do enjoy much of his work. The initial note in this thread mentions that the "common opinion" is that he sounds like Rollins. I've never heard anyone say that, nor seen such an assertion in print, and of course, IMO, he does not at all evoke the Rollins of any period from the '50s through the current time. In any event, these are my three favorite Lovano albums, the last two of which constitute the nonet group:
  4. Well, I live in Dan's neck of the woods and do shop at the same Border's but have no complaints with that particular store. Similarly, I've never had a problem with the Walgreen's (different branch than Dan - there' s practically one every half mile down here) I frequent. Stores that I avoid or very rarely frequent: Lowe's - every time I could not get what I needed at this store, Home Depot had it so I just don't go to Lowe's anymore. Case in point, two A/C filters of unusual dimensions, Home Depot had 'em, Lowe's did not. Office Max - Office Depot and the less frequent in these parts, Staples, kick their ass every time. Winn Dixie - they've declared bankruptcy for a reason; Publix is far superior down here on so many levels, e.g., cleanliness, gourmet choices of foods, quality prepared dinners, fresh fish, etc. Barnes & Noble - don't get me wrong here. Great looking stores, terrific choice of books, CDs, etc., but too goddamn expensive. Discounts are minimal and they try to hook you every time at the counter with a membership fee that will entitle you to nominal discounts on merchandise. I found I'm much better off browsing there and then ordering from Amazon.com, and other online distributors. That's about it for now.

  8. This discussion reminds me of what rock producer/impresario Bill Graham said many years ago in response to the news that high decibel levels of music similar to those present at his concerts had destroyed a statistically significant number of cells in the ear canals of laboratory guinea pigs. He replied, "I'll keep that in mind when I see a rise in guinea pig attendance". -_-
  9. Diz and Bird at Town Hall. Today marks the 60th anniversary of this terrific performance. Much thanks again to all who were involved in this marvelous and, to my ears, essential release.

  12. Not that I could add much to this discussion but I'd like it to be known that not only do I own an original Blue J's LP (and an Indent for that matter as well), but more significantly, I did attend the Blue J's concert that resulted in the recording. Nearly 32 years ago already, jeez!

  22. Glad you got to meet Mr. Woker, Dan. Beautiful guy with a nice store not only to browse in and buy from, but also to meet fellow jazz lovers and have great conversation. You'll appreciate this Dan: I was up at Stereo Jack's early the very same day that Pedro knocked down Zimmer. All the young students in the bar in which I watched the game cheered. Cambridge is a wonderful town.
  23. Don't know of any reviews but I recently borrowed a copy from the library and enjoyed the read. Maggin does his research although, based on some of the comments in this forum from those who had personal contact with Diz, some of his more egregious behavioral episodes are not mentioned in the bio. Nevertheless, I dug the book but have not read the Shipton which many prefer. I'm also embarrassed to admit that while I've owned Diz's own TO BE OR NOT TO BOP for some time, I've yet to read it. I read this particular bio because I enjoyed the one Maggin did of Getz previously.
