  1. Bless her for such a tremendous, completely altruistic decision. In light of the recent terrible division created by the Schiavo affair, it would be great if people everywhere could unite to celebrate a true pro-life situation by giving a monetary donation. I would.
  2. Yeah, I heard that and thought that Sutcliffe too had read the article in the Post and had not bothered to really think about it. Berman, by profession, is more prone to put facts into context.
  3. Well, of course you're correct. But how would you like to win 103 games in a 154 game season as the Yanks did in 1954, only to finish in 2nd place to the Cleveland Indians (who won an incredible 111 games that year) and not qualify for a postseason? That's one year Mantle didn't play in the postseason. The point is that without going into a baseball encyclopedia, I would bet that considering the history of Yankee success, there most probably were years that all four Hall of Famers mentioned in the article did not play in the postseason simply because there was not a playoff system in place during their eras. And please, I completely understand hatred of the Yankees. I have felt that way in the past about the Boston Celtics, the Green Bay Packers and the Montreal Canadiens, all of whom dominated their respective sports for significant lengths of time in the past, but it's irrelevant to the point I'm making.
  4. April 14th. Recorded on this date: 1937, Lionel Hampton with Cootie Williams, Lawrence Brown, Mezz Mezzrow, Johnny Hodges, Jess Stacy, Alan Reuss, John Kirby & Cozy Cole record at least 3 titles for RCA Victor: "Buzzin' Around with the Bee", "Whoa Babe", "Stompology". 1957, Sonny Rollins with J.J. Johnson, Thelonious Monk &/or Horace Silver, Paul Chambers & Art Blakey record 6 titles: SONNY ROLLINS, VOL. 2 (Blue Note): 1964, Sonny Rollins 3 with Bob Cranshaw & Roy McCurdy record: "Four" (2 takes), "I Remember Clifford (RCA Victor). 1993, James Carter 4 with Craig Taborn, Jaribu Shahid & Tani Tabbal record Carter's first album - JC ON THE SET (completed on 4/15, Columbia): 1995, Randy Weston group with Talib Kibwe, Billy Harper, Benny Powell, Alex Blake, Billy Higgins & Neil Clarke record 12 titles - SAGA (completed on 4/17, Verve):

Anybody have any thoughts one way or the other about THE CONDOR (Soul Note), circa '85. I believe it's a sextet recording with Steve Potts. Any Irene Aebi vocals (all of which I can do without)? I can trade for it, which is why I'm asking.
  6. Jared Wright the WIN, Curt Schilling the LOSS Sweet!!!!!!!
  7. I don't know, maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I saw Dexter several times and he always pronounced it as sax- ahf -a- nist, with the accent on the 2nd syllable.
  8. Mike Vaccaro in today's New York Post is writing about Yankee problems after only 7 games into the season when he then makes the following point and I quote: "Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera have never missed the postseason, which is remarkable, and even more astonishing if you think that Mickey Mantle missed October six times in 18 years as a Yankee, Joe DiMaggio three times in 13 years, Lou Gehrig seven times in 17 years and Babe Ruth eight times in 15 years." All those previous Yankees never had a post season that included anything other than the World Series. Playoffs, which by definition are in the postseason, were nonexistent back then. Had they existed, Mantle, Dimaggio, Gehrig and Ruth would have appeared in the postseason a greater number of times. I cannot understand why a sports writer puts stuff like that down and doesn't even bother to qualify his statements.
  9. Anybody know whether Artie had kept his unplayed (at least professionally) clarinet for the past half century? I bet that would go for a nice sum!
  10. Don't know if Laserlight has reissued this L R C Tyner disc. If so, their cover has to be an improvement over this (yuk!):
  11. That's a terrific improvement over the original L R C "art work":
  12. You hit upon something that raises a bit of a dilemma for me. OTOH, it's great to go into a store wherein the owner(s) are shelling out rent and creating somewhat of an aesthetically appealing environment with assorted shelving & displays, etc., all of which takes time and bucks. And most important, you and me the consumers get to touch and feel the merchandise, view the album covers, glean whatever info we can re personnel, tunes, recording dates, etc. We then think, the hell with paying $16, $17, $18, or whatever...we go home and get it cheaper online. Seems a bit unfair, doesn't it. Mind you, this is not criticism of you, I do it too. But it's no wonder, you can't find decent jazz selections at so many stores, even the ones that seem to want to maintain a well rounded choice of CDs. At this point, most of the stores I go into are the 2nd hand CD shops where promo copies of newer CDs can be had generally for $8 apiece. Obviously, this doesn't do much to support the artist. But no jazz fan I've ever met likes to throw away money (unless we're bidding on a rare "must have").

  14. How about the occasional announcer who repeats Pee Wee Marquette's gaffe: "Art Blake-ley"!
  15. Nothing jars the ear and senses more than to hear Bechet's classic version of "Summertime" on a college station, only to have the young announcer say afterwards, "That was the great New Orleans player, Sidney BECKETT".
  16. April 12th. Recorded on this date: 1952, Charles Mingus with Lee Konitz, Phyllis Pinkerton, George Koutzen, Al Levitt, Jackie Paris & Bob Benton record 4 titles (Debut): "Portrait", "I've Lost My Love", "Extrasensory Perception", "Precognition". 1977, Archie Shepp 4 with Dave Burrell, Cameron Brown & Charlie Persip appear at the 'Rising Sun Celebrity Club', Montreal, and perform: "U-jaama", "Sonny's Back", "The Girl from Ipanema", "Donna Lee", "In a Sentimental Mood", "Steam", "Crucificado", "Confirmation". 17. Precisely what I was thinking as I was going through this thread. I'm so tired after 40+ years of listening and collecting of having to be SO mindful of the listening sensibilities of guests in my house whenever I put on music. I feel like screaming sometimes, "Wake up already, get educated, these sounds are so swinging and vibrant and they're 35, 40, 50, 60 (whatever the case may be) years old! How could you be so goddamn ignorant musically and so negatively responsive?" Excuse the rant. I'll be all right.
  18. wouldn't that be a bit of a morbid session? I agree. But thanks anyway.
  19. April 11th. Recorded on this date: 1958, Max Roach 4 with George Coleman, Kenny Dorham & Nelson Boyd record "Billie's Bounce", "Koko", "Parker's Mood". (released on PLAYS THE MUSIC OF CHARLIE PARKER - Mercury) 1961, Benny Golson with Nick Travis, Bill Elton, Willie Ruff, Hal McKusick, Sol Schlinger, Tommy Williams and Albert 'Tootie' Heath record 3 titles: "Out of This World" (add Bernie Glow), "The Touch" (add Art Farmer), "Time". (released on TAKE A NUMBER FROM 1 TO 10 - Argo) 1979, Archie Shepp with Howard Johnson, Mickey Tucker, Takashi 'Gon' Mizuhashi & Roy Brooks record 3 Horace Silver tunes and one Tadd Dameron composition - TRAY OF SILVER (Denon):

    Renee Rosnes

I thoroughly agree with your assessment of FOR THE MOMENT. The version of "Summer Night" that she does with Joe is my all time favorite of that terrific tune. They really cook on it with Renee coming across very Corea-ish (acoustically of course).
  21. Will be in New Orleans next weekend Fri and Sat (4/15-16) nights. Any recommendationns of clubs, acts, in a modern jazz vein? I'm not interested in the Preservation Hall, Dixieland stuff. Thanks.
  22. April 10th. Also recorded on this date: 1963, Roy Haynes 4 featuring Booker Ervin, Ronnie Mathews & Larry Ridley record 6 titles - CRACKLIN' (New Jazz):
  23. April 9th. Also recorded on this date: 1960, Miles Davis 5 with John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb perform in Holland (Natasha and other bootleg labels): "So What", "'Round Midnight", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Walkin', "The Theme". 1977, McCoy Tyner records the first of two separate trio dates, with Ron Carter & Tony Williams - "Wave", "Blues on the Corner", "I Mean You", "The Greeting", "Prelude to a Kiss", "Moment's Notice" (available on SUPERTRIOS - Milestone). 1984, Chico Freeman with John Purcell, Kenny Kirkland, Mark Thompson, Cecil McBee & Elvin Jones records 6 titles - THE PIED PIPER (Black-Hawk).
  24. Well, I for one was looking forward to more live recordings on the Label M line. Besides the Hubbard-Heath, I have the one of Getz which was done in '75, also at the 'Left Bank'. Considering there is a ten year span between these two recordings alone, there are probably many live dates recorded at this one club. Were there any other live dates issued on the Label M line?
  25. The combative tone this thread has taken is all too reminiscent of the old (but never dead, it seems) controversy regarding the significance of west coast jazz within the entire jazz realm, so to speak. This issue has never been resolved, proponents and detractors galore for the past half century. There are those like myself who don't consider ourselves as members of either camp but who do like these recordings (I've owned the Contemporary LPs for 35 years). Yet I would never think of putting them on a so-called desert island list, not that I've ever attempted to construct one. I guess I'm more in the Nessa camp then as far as attitude towards the music but for those who really extol the value of these recordings (and I'm not sure if Dan is one of them, he just seems to be bugged at anyone telling anybody not to rave excessively), hey, enjoy and celebrate as much as you want. That's what is one of the many joys of this board.
