  1. BTW, nobody including Joe Buck et al bothered to mention that what A-Rod did really hurt the Yanks. Jeter should have been on 2nd base in scoring position as a result of a typical fielder's choice instead of having to return to 1st base due to A-Rod's bush interference ploy. Instead, Buck kept stating during the umpires' conference that Jeter will return to 1st base but neglected to point out that the resulting interference call is a punitive one.
  2. Agreed. Very, very unYankee-like. And to make things worse, it stirred up the idiot segment of the crowd who either didn't really understand why A-Rod was justifiably called out for interference or didn't care. Maybe A-Rod doesn't yet know that clutch hits with men on base in the late innings of close games are what really wins in the post season, because he sure as hell isn't delivering any.
  3. Need a second baseman? Miguel Cairo hit .290 and played the position very well this year. The Yanks view him as an unsung tremendous addition to the team.
  4. When I lived in the New York metro area over 10 years ago, Woody regularly performed at Michael's Pub on Monday evening with a Dixieland band. I did catch him on one occasion. Not great, but quite serviceable on clarinet playing in that style.
  5. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hate when injuries enter the equation in any sport. I like for teams to play at full strength so that there should be no excuses on either side. Not to mention that rooting for any injury to a player on an opposing team is equivalent to wishing that someone you don't know should experience pain, for how else are injuries manifested? If it's true that we've seen the last of Schilling this year, then the Yanks will have no excuse whatsoever if they lose this series to the Sox who would be playing without their ace pitcher. Well all I can say Dan is that if the Sox can somehow perform the unthinkable, then the taste of victory will be that much sweeter.
  6. As someone who owns quite a few of Tubby's CDs, I'm interested in this one. When was it recorded and can you give me a link for obtaining it? Thanks
  7. Here I am rooting for a perfect game and the Sox get 10 hits and plate 7 runs in the last 3 innings! I guess the only good that comes out of that is that the Sox have the aggravation of losing a close one rather than shrugging off a laugher. Either way, the Sox are very tough, but certainly much less so if Schilling doesn't sufficiently recover from his bad ankle. I expect Martinez to be extremely tough tonight especially because he will be ready to overcome that foolish "they're my daddy" comment. For me, the most frustrating moment of last night's game was Tanyon Sturtze serving a meatball to Varitek on an 0-2 pitch. That is my pet peeve. In the last decade or so, pitchers are far more willing to throw hittable pitches on 0-2 counts than when I first started watching baseball nearly 50 years ago. An 0-2 pitch should never be a strike, period! Ideally, it should be close enough so that the hitter might go after it in his eagerness to protect the plate. I can't fathom what the reasons are for a high strike fastball on 0-2 which is what Sturtze threw Varitek. I stormed around the house for a good 5 minutes after I saw that.
  8. Second your thoughts about Shaw if only being alive is the test. Interesting about your apparent regard for Dodds. I recall Shaw - who could be mighty off-putting with his frankness - severely putting down Dodds in print while stating that for that period Jimmy Noone was his personal favorite on clarinet.
  9. I hope. Will the Pats ever lose?
  10. Good! After raiding my team, the Jets, of four top notch players a year ago, I wish them nothing but the worst. It was good to see Laverneus as a goat this past game. Good receiver but way overpaid thanks to Mr. Snyder. Meanwhile the Jets with the help of some significant 2nd year and rookie talent are 3-0!
  11. I would have replied sooner however a second hurricane here in southeast Florida put me out of commission until today. I confess that I have not painstakingly compared each of the other tracks on the ANGEL EYES session as of yet but will do so to see if other alternate takes exist. BTW, I'm surprised that I have yet to see this session issued on CD, at least here in the U.S.
  12. Apropos of the discussion of Brubeck mono and stereo recordings, I made an interesting find a few years ago. For many years I've owned a stereo Brubeck LP titled ANGEL EYES with a gorgeous blue-eyed blonde woman's face on the cover. I've always loved the first track in particular, a swinging take of "Will You Still be Mine". A few years ago, I'm at the local library where one can find quite a few items of interest that people hand in for the library to sell for mere pennies, e.g., books and most importantly, LPs. So I cop this clean mono copy of ANGEL EYES for the outrageous sum of 25 cents. Just to make sure how clean it is in terms of sound, I put it on the turntable and DAMN, the take of will You Still be Mine" is most definitely an alternate one and also quite good. So I now have both the stereo and mono copies of Brubeck's ANGEL EYES Columbia releases in my collection. Anyone else aware of this, especially any Brubeck or Paul Desmond discographers out there?
  13. Don't know if this is from The Lighthouse or not (far as I know, nobody knows for sure), but supposedly Tony Waters (congas) is on the Lighthouse date, but Waters isn't on the "Jazz Patterns" bootleg (or at least he can't be heard on the bootleg). Neither "Punjab" nor "Power To The People" are on the Joe Henderson box (or on this new Lighthouse release), and "Power To The People' in particular really lets everyone stretch out. It covers an entire side of the bootleg LP, and probably goes on for 20 minutes. Also, "Power To The People" is one of my very favorite Milestone-era Joe tunes. Anybody know of any CD-issue of "Jazz Patterns"?? Not looking (or expecting) so much a legit release of this material, but something like a European gray-market issue (Jazz-door, Jazz-up, or one of those labels)?? Sidebar: weren't most of those labels from Italy?? JAZZ PATTERNS is indeed the bootleg LP that I was referring to. I had always believed that it had been recorded at the Lighthouse around the same time as the legit Milestone material. As I indicated in my previous post, I am not aware of JAZZ PATTERNS having ever been issued on any CD, bootleg or not.
  14. Are there any tracks on it that were not issued on the Joe Henderson Milestone box set? I ask because indeed there are extra tracks that were issued many years ago on a bootleg LP that I own. It would be nice to have all the material on CD.
  15. What is "HACF"? Haven't a Coughin' Flu?
  16. Just under 2,000 jazz CDs (over 2,000 if you count each CD of a 2, 3 or 4 CD issue), 65 CD boxed sets, and over 5,000 jazz LPs. I'm trying to figure out a way to take it all with me when I'm gone.
  17. Can't say I know what the theme of this disc is yet, but here goes my preliminary reactions: 1) Has to be George Adams on tenor. Very distinctive player 2) Well if the tenor on the 1st track is distinctive what can I say about this one? It's almost embarrassing to point out who it is as he and this piece should be automatically known to any jazz fan. The only question is, where did this live version of this tune that he has played on at least 5,000 occasions come from? 3) "Straight, No Chaser". Avant garde piano of interest, no idea who it is. 4) "Bye Bye Blackbird" segueing into "Naima". Don't recognize the alto player. Dug the quote from "When Lights are Low". 5) Woody Shaw?
  18. 1) "My Favorite Things", don't recognize piano player 3) Definitely don't have this recording however it sounds very much like a Blue Note date with Stanley Turrentine and Lee Morgan. Hadn't been aware that they ever recorded together so I was doubting my guess however a Lee Morgan discography I have indicates that they did record a date together sometime in '64. Is this track from it (assuming I have the front line right)? 4) "Taking a Chance on Love". Like this tune. Nice piano trio version. 5) "It Might as Well be Spring". Trombone doesn't do much for me. 7) "Killing Me Softly". Alto player sounds a little tired. Not a good jazz tune. 10) "Them There Eyes". Sounds possibly like Al Cohn. 11) Can't place this good '40s sounding swing track but sounds like Benny Carter on alto, Hawk, and possibly Buck Clayton 12) "All the Things....". Recognized Konitz immediately. Other alto sounded like Anthony Braxton which leads me to believe that this track is from an early '70s Atlantic recording under Brubeck's leadership. Interestingly, the piano player didn't remind me of Dave but I know of no other session in which these two alto players appeared together. 13) "Lester Leaps In" . Can't place tenor. Thanks, enjoyable disc.
  19. Discs received. Impressions of Disc One already written down. Listening to Disc 2 as I type this. Many thanks.
  20. J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets Jets!
  21. Many years ago I had the nerve to get into a discussion with Archie Shepp wherein I insisted that Bird wrote "Donna Lee' while Shepp maintained that Miles was the composer. Obviously he was correct. Glad I didn't bet.
  22. I have a bootleg VHS tape of two Art Ford Jazz Party shows. While the personnel listed is somewhat incomplete for the show that includes Hawkins (no bassist identified, for example), the participants include Charlie Shavers (tp); Vic Dickinson (tb); Pee Wee Russell (cl); Harry Sheppard (vb); Willie 'the Lion' Smith (p); Dick Thompson (g); Sonny Greer (d); May Barnes (vcl). Hope this helps.
  23. For the jazz lovers on this board, one CD that I'm surprised has not been mentioned is his very first for the Reprise label, RING-A-DING DING! Except for the title dismissible track, it consists of standards arranged by Johnny Mandel (original LP issue which had 12 tracks) and features solos by Frank Rosolino and Don Fagerquist among others. Terrific, swinging Frank. The arrangement of "Let's Fall in Love" is worth the price of admission alone. The CD has 3 additional tracks done by other arrangers including one by Nelson Riddle.
  24. Plus CD-Rs enable you to make fantastic compilation CD-Rs for the car, parties, etc.
  25. As one who has benefited from your use of this machine, I can attest to the fact that transfers from source cassettes are excellent. The only negative I can see is that when indexing the tracks from a live recording, a split second of silence is inserted during the applause between cuts.
