  1. "although someone mentioned “Dwight” Dickerson – is that a nickname of his?" My mistake - pianist brother of Walt. Will certainly play this BFT again and again. Some I thought I'd got right but not so, particularly mistook Bob Gordon for Jack Nimitz. Thoroughly enjoyable listen, and the guessing was fun too. Thanks a lot, Martin.

I tried to get the bigger file from the site, but it turned out a dead link. There is only so much magic one can apply to bad graphics. ← Yes, I tried that too. Gave a message in German (?) which even I could understand. Thanks for trying.

So here's the list of twenty that I'm still looking for. If anyone spots them, please let me know. List transferred to later post. August 26.

But the good news is that another cover picture has become available. Thanks to Couw's usual expert picture manipulation input, it has been processed and is now on the website www.ronnieross.com, in the Jazz Discography at 57/1. This gives me a full set for that year and brings the total I'm still looking for down to twenty only. Unfortunately, the album itself on eBay has already gone too high for me and looks as if it might go a lot higher yet. Particularly glad to get this one though as it is an out and out jazz album from an important period.

That sophisiticated software one sees in the movies where a filter runs through a picture making it clearer at each stage is apparently not around here then? Been watching too many i guess.

Another request for help. Can anyone make this picture clear enough to read? I'm particularly interested in track 5 of Side 1 and the details which come after the title - "Majo Taj" I think it is - but to be able to read it all would be good. It comes from here.

As presaged by Sidewinder, the album "Thames Suite" has been issued on CD and I now have a new picture posted in the Ronnie Ross Jazz Discography as below. I did not have this on my sought for list as I had one already but it did have a severe glare problem right in the middle so this one is much better. List is still at twenty one.
  8. 13. Gonsalves for one? Not sure if anyone has suggested this already. I made a note a long time ago and somehow missed it.

And here I am again already, posting succulent morsels of news on Ronnie Ross front. An album unknown to me has surfaced; unfortunatley not unknown material but I have added it to the Ronnie Ross Jazz Discography at the expense of a morning's work. The cover picture is displayed below.

So just to round things off here is the current list of cover pictures still sought. Please keep your eyes open during your surfing for any of these. I will eagerly follow up any hint of a find. Be nice to get down to twenty, or below even. List transferred to later post. August 26.

And, thanks to King Ubu , more details have become available on items in the 1965 section (65/1 and 65/2) of the Ronnie Ross Jazz Discography www.ronnieross.com. I have yet to include them because I am living in hopes of getting the actual recordings from the same source and will then I expect be able to verify even more details by listening .

Another cover picture of a kind. It is of one side of a 78 which contains two of the tracks from the session. The four tracks in the Ronnie Ross Jazz Discography www.ronnieross.com are from two sessions in October 1956 so I assume they were put together as an EP which would have had a cover, whereas the 78 just came in the usual brown paper that I vaguely remember. So this "picture" does not reduce my list of still wanted as the EP cover has not yet surfaced. I live in hope.
  13. Completely missed the tune on 5, but knowing now it's "Little Niles, album has to bethis one.
  14. Oh, yes! Me too.
  15. Count me in as number one, please. sending pm
  16. Well, if others have ID'd it, I've yet to hear from them. Good going. BTW, did you know it's based on the changes to "Days of Wine and Roses"??!!!! ← No, didn't know that and would never have guessed. I must listen again to see if I can hear it. I'm trying to remember what the tune is of 3, and that's not the only one. Sometimes the more one tries, the more the answers seem to recede.
  17. I definitely do not know anything about the first item but I like the tango rhythm at beginning and end and some good soloing in between. Somehow I wish they had kept the tango feel all the way through.
  18. I have identified number 2 on this disc - probably others have too I guess. first track of this album. I will try to post more later if I can think of anything but it's an uphill struggle.
  19. I liked every minute of this disc. 1. Tune is familiar but I don’t know what it is and can’t identify any of the players. Sounds like Ellington I should think. Reveled in this one - propulsive. 2. The baritone player sounds very like Pepper Adams but I don’t know the tune. Having listened several times (because I like it), but no names appear from the mists as to the other players. I can’t connect to anyone who is often found in PA’s company. 3. Now here’s one I know. Got the 1968 CD not too long ago together with another from 1971 by the pianist (who composed this tune) but was struck by the change in approach over a mere three years. Hampton Hawes "Blues for Bud". Track 8. 4. Don’t know anyone here or the tune. 5. Very familiar – no trouble identifying this. A favourite trumpeter and baritone player. I can’t say I listen to the tenor player all that much but no complaints on this album. Pianist – can’t get enough of him. Dizzy Reece, "Asia Minor". Track 4. 6. Liked it but no idea who or what. 7. Know the tune well from album Brother John by Elvin with Pat LaBarbera on tenor. Dameron’s “Whatever Possessed Me”. No inspiration as to the players though. 8. No ideas. 9. Don’t know the tune. Dwight Dickerson’s name comes to mind, mainly because of the moaning and groaning going on. 10. Sounds like west coast but I can’t think of a name for the tune even though it is rather familiar. Perhaps Niehaus and Nimitz, alto and baritone. 11. Another one I know well. Blue Mitchell, "Blue's Moods", Track 2. 12. Nice interplay. No ideas. 13. Is it Basie? Don’t know. 14. Shelly Manne, "Perk Up", Track 7. Mike Wofford’s "Bleep", sounding like a Monk composition I thought. 15. Another one I know, from “Fabulous Fats” album. Track 9. 16. No idea. 17. Don’t know the tune or the players but looking forward to finding out as I would like this album. There’s a feel a little like some of the Ronnie Ross things I’ve got in the ensemble passages. 18. Clueless again. Thanks a lot for a very engrossing disc, Martin. For those I think I know, I tried putting in links to AMG but wouldn't work so I've put the names. I suppose anyone who doesn't want to know doesn't have to look.
  20. This is a freak event. Lately UK has been on the tail end until now. Hope our luck lasts.
  21. First of the month, the sun rises (or would have but for the rain and clouds) and BFT28 discs arrive. That's what I call good timing. Thanks Martin. Will listen later today.
  22. Three volumes? Lucky you!
  23. from AMG - "This CD reissue (a fine hard bop date) adds an alternate take of "Tip-Toeing" to the original program. "
  24. Gigi Gryce on that album too. I am just reading Mike Fitzgerald's and Noal Cohen's book about him - "Rat Race Blues". Engrossing stuff. Ice cream addict it seems. Spurned cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.
