  1. Exactly. It's terrible. Jazz Standard was one of a number of places I really enjoyed going in the "before time," food was good and the music and sound were often excellent. The loss of places like this, and the fact that NYC is still siding with landlords keeping properties empty as "investments" and tax breaks, shrinking availability of artists' spaces, etc., is one reason why I'm leaving the city in the near term.
  2. yeah, gutted here as well. Though we were not always on the same page politically I found her to be a warm and generous person.
  3. My bad and bad eyes, thanks!
  4. Sad news to report: multi-instrumentalist Zusaan Kali Fasteau (Sea Ensemble, Archie Shepp, many of her own configurations) died on Nov. 20, 2020 at age 73. Knew her a bit through the scene and saw her perform many times. Her CDs on the Flying Note label are varied and often superb. Completely individual personality and a creative wizard, she will be missed. https://ssqfuneralhome.com/tribute/details/2618/Zusaan-Fasteau/obituary.html
  5. I've seen Robinson play a number of times -- with Muhal, Warren Smith, J.D. Parran, and others. Fantastic musician that rarely gets his due.
  6. Sad to report that the great Danish trumpeter Allan Botchinsky passed on Nov. 26 at 80. He worked with, among others, Sahib Shihab, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Oscar Pettiford, the Jazz Quintet-60 and Radiojazzgruppen. 9. Lowell Davidson -- Trio -- (ESP) dusting off an old favorite.
  10. Asante is an incredible album, perhaps one of Tyner's best.
  11. I've listened to an original before -- this has a little less murk to it and a bump in clarity. Not a drastic difference, just a bit of brightening in the corners.
  12. We all know about Crapton's tendencies. This should come as no surprise. Barf.
  13. ah dang! yeah I can tell that's not the problem at least. yeah mine does have a click at the beginning of track B2, during a solo tenor cadenza.
  14. Got it, but side B of the first record is very scuffy -- seems to play okay but I am nevertheless going to ask Resonance whether a replacement of that disc can be procured.
  15. I have that Horo, it's really nice.

  17. Ah ok, I only have heard the Arnhem stuff so this is even further expanded. Most stores here are not carrying the set on vinyl but I think JRC is. Hope there's no scrum to get it!
  18. Agreed on both counts -- I have several of them and they're all excellent.
  19. oh, and of course there's this somewhat more contemporary outfit: https://www.discogs.com/artist/70515-School-Days
