I was sort of underwhelmed by Mohawk, though I do like it. But hey, to each his own...

It's beautiful. Sabu Toyozumi studied with the AEC, and has done the tune on his albums - namely, Message to Chicago (Trio).

Marshall is good on that Graham Collier "Down Another Road" LP (Fontana, reissued on CD)... and yes, he does get a track pretty much to himself. Have you checked out Collier's music yet, AK? The first three slay me, the others mildly jab. If you're not hip on Elton Dean, then I would avoid "Hoppertunity Box" and "Monster Band" like the plague, as well as much Soft Machine from the early 70s. But then, avoiding that stuff takes a big chunk out of one's exposure to the British jazz/rock cross-pollination, which is pretty endemic to all the stuff you're wanting to hear.

Used to have that on LP; should get that one back.

AK, The one with Berger is a cooperative group with John McLaughlin, and it's called Where Fortune Smiles. It should be included, at least in part, on the Dawn Sessions CD. How Many Clouds is an amazing record; the first half is mostly large ensemble, and the song "Galata Bridge" has to be heard to be believed. I don't have Algonquin, but I'd like to. It was reissued on CD a few years back, and I know the first two are OOP so you'd better be quick! Enjoy, CT

I don't understand what the deal is with fidelity complaints on that record - it's one of the better-sounding radio tapes I've ever heard, for sure, and the music is probably the best Rudd and Tchicai recorded together.

I think that the LP sounds good, though a bit muddy - still, it's a bootlegged radio tape source, so far above par when you think about it. CD can't be any worse, right? Funny, Universal reissuing a bootleg concert LP. Great record, though!

I didn't know he'd died of AIDS. Still, I doubt from touching the blood on the keys one could 'get it.' It's actually a fairly difficult disease to get.

Shorter hardly solos on any recordings from the 70s, save Shepp's "Coral Rock." He was going a bit (more) out of his mind at that point, so the story goes.

Sangrey's right - Tes Esat is certifiably insane, and possibly beyond 'out.' I mean, we all know Shorter's a weird motherfucker, but have you ever heard Gary Windo's "Dogface" record, or his work with Ray Russell? I mean, the guy's a nut. I bet Dyani was having a blast working with that bunch of crazies. CT

I've never heard an ESP jazz release I didn't like, but recommending the Marzette Watts and the Giuseppi Logan records to someone who prefers more 'tonal' saxophone playing (not to mention 'hates clarinet') is a might dubious... Just trying to keep 'em out of the used bins! CT
