A bit of yellow around the mike on couw's piccie although the one I've posted does have some yellowing ageing I guess.

But you are early.. Those are interesting thoughts about the evolving nature of the compositions. Some of these pieces remind me of 50s Teddy Charles and (oddly maybe?) the Blue Note Don Grolnicks. I'm just really getting into this album on the vinyl and hope to post some further impressions during the week.

Vic Lewis 'Plays Bossa Nova At Home and Away' (HMV stereo). Some great Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott with a London band on side 1. Side 2 has an equally stellar LA lineup with Shorty Rogers, Jack Sheldon and Bud Shank. A bossa nova theme album that actually works.

Originally released on Contemporary in 1956, this was Tatro's only session as leader with an all-star West Coast lineup. It has one of the coolest cover designs ever: The album, featuring very progressive arrangements for the time (and building on some of the concepts from 'Birth of the Cool'), has been reissued by Fantasy under the 'OJC' imprint. Scott Yanow's review on AllMusic almost deserves a thread of its own. Quote: 'This CD reissue has composer Duane Tatro's only album as a leader, and it is easy to hear why his services were not more in demand. Tatro's 11 originals have overarranged ensembles, plenty of humorless dissonance, and not much solo space for the members of his octet. In other words, the music is rather dry and dull. Despite the presence of trumpeter Stu Williamson, altoist Lennie Niehaus, Bill Holman on tenor and baritonist Jimmy Giuffre, very little of interest occurs, making this a badly dated effort. Discuss... (starts Oct 16)

'Miles Davis Sextet' 10" Prestige LP (LP182)

Looks like Universal are messing around with 'Hum Dono' and its not part of the new 'Impressed' release batch (just the Tubby Hayes reissues this time round). Too bad - they should get their act together with this fine session.

Yes, I think this reissue was on RCA Novus. Occasionally I come across the Hodges LP that you mention. Don't think I've seen the Oliver Nelson original.

What about those couple of tracks featuring Thomas on the Oliver Nelson 'Black, Brown and Beautiful' collection put out on RCA and reissued in the late 1980s? That one is fantastic and also has some very fine Johnny Hodges (one of his very last sessions I think).

Still can't believe that this one has sold only 4500ish copies considering this is a desert-island Hankophile's dream (hello Aric ). - incredible !

Johnnie Spence Big Band 'Why Not?' (UK Verve). I thought it sounded suspiciously like the CBBB in parts but then I noticed one Mr K. Clare listed on the drums.

Bought a near mint copy of that 'Tune Up' twofer the other week. The pressing quality of those green label reissues is usually very good and - as has been noted - there are some great sleeve notes.

Warne Marsh 'All Music' (Nessa)

I like it - in fact more so than I was expecting to. Good music throughout the box, which I've hardly scratched the surface of yet. The quality of the West Coast backing bands is outstanding throughout and Mosaic's sound, very good.
