  1. Just a short post to say that I have received Amancio D'Silva 'Reflections' from Honest Jon's (overnight delivery - remarkable). It is a very good reissue - the white vinyl had me nervous but the sonics are good. Tony Higgins' notes are also very thorough and informative, including session reel photos. As for the Zev/Elemental/Jazz Detective releases I have picked up this time - no problems noted with any of them, including the Lateef.
  2. Why the negativism? All inputs to this thread should be invited instead of applying your interpretation. If nothing else, it makes the board more welcoming. Not worth my effort commenting further. 🙄
  3. Yes, I have an order in for the Amancio with HJs. Surprised that they still have the Bill Evans still in stock as it flew off the shelves everywhere else. Their stock of the Zev stuff seems limited to just the two Sun Ra's though - maybe there is more to come. I have the Bill Evans on the big Riverside CD box but not otherwise on vinyl.
  4. This thread is titled 'No one buys books'. No mention of whether or not new.
  5. I find myself buying more than ever these days (and will have to have a clear out soon). As a regular visitor to our National Trust historic houses and gardens, most of these have second hand bookshops where bargains can be found for a few £. Similarly, Oxfam. I don't think I've used a library for 30 years !
  6. Indeed - hard to believe that you are not there, facing the stage. My copies are the green deep-groove pressing.
  7. Yes, same here. I have early stereo copies and can't think of anything that sounds better than them for live recordings.
  8. Thanks for that. That would explain why my 'local' didn't have it on the day.
  9. Yes, it is a gem of a set. If my memory is right I bought it in the LP version when it was on 'last chance' on the Mosaic site. Those were the days..
  10. The best way to hear those JJ Columbias is likely on the Mosaic set. The only one I have on separate LP I think is 'A Touch of Satin' on a UK CBS issue.
  11. Another spin of 'Sun Ra - Inside the Light World: Sun Ra Meets the OVC' (Strut 2LPs). A fine previously-unissued 80s Ra session, in good studio sound (at 'Mission Control', Boston) and with nice sleeve liner and booklet, including Bill Sebastien interview. Youtube has video of the band plus OVC light show in action with the music from a couple of tracks on this one. Woops sorry - wrong thread ! Was tempted with this one but the box sold out quickly locally, on the day. Will be more than happy with the CDs.
  12. Sun Ra 'Inside the Light World: Sun Ra Meets the OVC' (Strut 2LPs)
  13. Dexter Gordon Quartet 'Live at Chateauvallon 1978' (Elemental). Nice INA recording from a few RSDs back. Bonus of sleeve notes by Michael Cuscuna and Maxine Gordon. A superb LP !
  14. The idea of a Singers Unlimited TV show for teens on Sunday night in the 70s would be unthinkable here in the UK. We would have more likely had T-Rex, Slade, Bay City Rollers, the Glitter creature or something from the Osmond/Cassidy corporations !
  15. That 'Yoshis' is a really good CD. Bonus for me is that my copy came from our good friend BillF's collection, bless him.
  16. Picked up straggler LP copies of two of the Sun Ra's (Elemental Chicago concerts plus the Strut) so that is me done for this year. The store also had a second hand copy of David Meeker's 'Jazz in the Movies' book so added that one too. All of the stores I visited seem to have sold their copies of the Bill Evans on Craft in super fast time.
  17. Yes - she was (not sure if it is still going). In fact I saw her mc-ing there on a few of my visits to that venue when located at Helms Ave and even doing a vocal, although can't remember who with. She is interviewed in the booklet.
  18. I've been happy with their LPs to date. The one time I did have a defective disk they shipped out a replacement from the US pretty pronto.
  19. Yeah, it's nice - and very varied stylistically too, something for everyone for the audience who were there. Originally wasn't going to get this one on LP but succumbed. Sonically it isn't audiophile but is very acceptable. I'm not a fan overall of the Yusef Atlantics and this one is very much in his acoustic/non-fusion bag. Lots of solo space for Kenny Barron, not surprisingly.
  20. Yusef Lateef 'Atlantis Lullaby - The Concert From Avignon' (Elemental 2LP)
  21. On the second disk from 1966 with the Penthouse broadcasts, Ruth adds a vocal to the short 3rd track of each broadcast. Works well ! As mentioned in the booklet, she was also a good friend of Manne and helped him to scout out the location of the Manne-Hole club.
  22. Shelly Manne and His Men 'Jazz From The Pacific Northwest' (Reel to Real 2LP) A definite find - Monterey and Penthouse, Seattle recordings by 2 groups in good sound.
