  1. Followed up by Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Tones' (NY USA mono)
  2. Adrian The drummer was Eric Gravatt. Ex Weather Report and an associate of Tyner's from his Milestone days. ← I must need my hearing testing, John. I was sure that Tyner said Harland on the second intro (his voice was very quiet) but on first announcement I only heard the word 'Eric' and thought 'that couldn't possibly be Eric Gravatt, could it?'. In any event, he was spectacular. He's the guy who spent all those years as a prison guard after playing in Weather Report, right?
  3. Only stereo? Just giving an 'airing' to Baby Face Willette 'Stop and Listen' (BN NY USA mono). Not the greatest of sleeves but the vinyl kicks ass.. Clifford - 'MFPs' were about 10s/50p when they came out in the 1960s/70s, by the way. About the cheapest LPs on the market at the time (along with Ronco, K-Tel etc.)
  4. Yes, a friend of mine has a copy and keeps going on about how great it is ( ). Can usually be picked up around the £15 to £20 mark, thankfully. It originally came out I think on the MFP budget label. Their usual 'fare' was Bert Kaempfert, 'Top Of The Pops' cover compilations etc.
  5. Dexter Gordon 'Dexter Calling' (BN Liberty stereo)
  6. Lee Morgan 'Search For The New Land' (BN NY USA mono)
  7. McCoy isn't actually that old - 11th Dec 1938 I think, which would make him 67. I'm in for the 'Gerald' on Thursday night - currently debating on whether or not to go for the Kurt Elling on Friday night. Opinions? The Gerald Wilson was a no-brainer.. Incidentally, I was watching a video of him yesterday back in 1962 when he was still soloing on trumpet. Must be over 40 years since he stopped being featured on this and just stuck to arranging/directing.. clunky - it was Reginald Veal on bass in McCoy's group plus the excellent Eric Harland on drums, I think. I thought the Poole gig was spectacular, one of the best performances I have ever seen from McCoy. Nice group empathy !
  8. My way, when I went back to vinyl...and I ended up with originals I can think only two worst way to bankrupcy: drugs and gambling. ← You forgot to add trophy women !
  9. I would agree. I started with DMMs, descended into Toshiba and Kings and succumbed to the NY USAs. If you have a decent deck set-up there really is nothing to touch them.
  10. I agree and would really like to see them do that Woody set! ←
  11. Indeed. There was quite a bit of Jazz 625 material wiped to make space for game shows, Bruce Forsyth, 'Blankety Blank' etc. ITV were just as bad. They wiped a whole series of Joe Harriott/John Mayer 'Indo Jazz Fusions' recorded at the HTV Bristol studio.
  12. 'Stanley Turrentine' BN multicolour twofer sides 3 and 4. The mid-sized group material.
  13. Rex Stewart Lex Luther Luther Rix ← Martin Luther John Knox The 'Rev' Ian Paisley
  14. Lon Armstrong Lance Armstrong Louis Armstrong
  15. Yes, I have that one. It's pretty interesting - will have to dig it out, haven't played it for a while.
  16. Up again for air with this thread. Anyone know when the 'Frankly Jazz' website will go live? Just checking out some of the videos (UK released by TCB Publishing back in the 1980s) this afternoon. The Sammy Davis Jr is sort of neat, with Davis on vibes featured with his regular touring group. Much of that particular show also features Victor Feldman and his trio plus Jimmy Rowles (on piano for Feldman's vibes feature). The Gerald Wilson video is pretty damn interesting in that it features Gerald playing trumpet as well as directing the band. This particular video also includes the great show with the Jazz Crusaders and featuring music from 'Freedom Sound' and 'Looking Forward'. Anyone seen the Shorty Rogers and Shelly Manne broadcasts from this show? According to the list of shows these look to be the only ones I am missing. Looks like this series only had one short run in 1962. Let's hope that these come out on DVD at some stage.
  17. Turrentine multi-colour twofer is next up on deck !
  18. Joe Harriott/John Mayer 'Indo Jazz Fusions II' (Columbia Lansdowne mono). Just the thing when cooking up a fresh green Thai curry.. Followed up with 'Indo Jazz Suite' - also by Harriott/Mayer. I really must get hold of the 'Curried Jazz' LP by Kenny Wheeler & co.
  19. Suspect that Tony Higgins is fighting a lone battle with Universal, Roger. Clearly, from his great sleeve notes on the 'Impressed' compilations he's well and truly into this stuff in a very big way. Second your comments about the 'Will Power' reissue. That's exactly how a Brit jazz reissue should be done. Big thumbs up to Vocalion. 'Will Power' is indeed a sleeper in the pantheon of rare but very good British jazz. Incidentally - and after all these years - I've just been lucky enough to get myself a vinyl 2LP set of it to go with the CDs. It's in the mail..
  20. Hmmm... Joe Harriott comes out as Matvey Blanter (whoever he/she is ) Bach was second choice..
  21. Big John Patton 'Got A Good Thing Goin' (BN NY USA mono). The perfect supplement to the Mosaic Select.
  22. Wayne 'Mr Gone' Shorter Alan Shorter Gato Barbieri
  23. Big John Patton CDs 1 and 3. Already one of my all-time favourite Mosaics..
  24. Oliver Nelson 'Three Dimensions' (Impulse - 'Dedication Series' twofer reissue). This is a good 'un.
