I'm sure I saw ex-Herman trumpeter Lyn Biviano featured on one of those Welk shows.

Hmmm. Not only have you now got a Mobley vinyl set but also it would appear a A. Hill vinyl set. Grrrrr. - It shouldn't be allowed !!!!!!

Up for this thread. I had the very great pleasure of seeing McCoy and his trio (with Reginald Veal, Eric Harland) on Monday night. Over the years I've maybe seen him play about half a dozen times and the performance on Monday was as good as I've ever heard him - simple as that. A magnificent, stately and rivetting performance, and for my money this is the best trio he has ever led. He has aged quite a bit facially since I last saw him in LA about 6 years ago but his playing seemed very much rejuvinated and full of the 'great drive' of old, nobody like him gets that incredible big sound out of the keys. The only performance from him I've seen which compares was a 1981/82 gig with Joe Ford and John Blake at Ronnie Scotts and that one was incendiary. For anyone who gets the chance to see McCoy and trio in the near future - don't pass ! This particular gig in the UK looks to have been one of just a few performances (Manchester and London also on the itinery I think) - I'm sad to say - was not well attended. Those present gave him a huge, appreciative ovation at the end though.

There's also a Wes Montgomery, a Coleman Hawkins and definitely a Monk. I think I've seen a Johnny Hodges too.

These Vogues can be very nice finds if found in good condition. Early ones from the mid-50s were in the 10", later issues through into the 1960s were 12". The Pacific Jazz pressings come in either 10" or 12" - most of the PJ's I've seen are the 12". I have in my collection Vogues of the 'Bob Brookmeyer With Strings' and a couple of the Bud Shanks. They also did some of the early Lexington Blue Notes. Nice to see mention of Alun Morgan's name, Patricia. His essays and sleevenotes are usually very informative and immaculately put together. I rank him up there along with Charles Fox, in that respect.

There's a video performance of part of 'Calling Planet Earth' on that 'Sun Ra - A Joyful Noise' DVD.

That Ardley track on CD1 of 'Will Power' features some nice duet vocals by Norma Winstone and Pepi Lemer. If my memory is right they were teamed up quite a bit in the 1970s along with Maggie Nichols. Recall hearing Pepi Lemer featured quite a bit back in the 1970s on BBC Radio live jazz sessions (I think she was/is married to pianist Pete Lemer).

Is this the same session that was released on Pacific Jazz, recorded in California? That is a very nice date, with some excellent arrangements! I have the Pacific Jazz release. ← Sounds like it. That Clifford Brown Pacific Jazz session certainly came out on a UK Vogue 12" LP. Lots of Pacific Jazz sessions were UK issued under the Vogue label.

I have the LP version and I rarely play it. Will have to put that to rights this week.

Hi Roger ! Yes, the vinyl 'Will Power' is very rare. One copy of the Argo 2LP went on ebay from a US buyer last week for over $200. I paid £11.99 for the 2CD the other day - much more like it. A great little set - the lovely Neil Ardley tune on CD1 is very similar to the key theme on 'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows', indeed the music as a whole is somewhat reminiscent of that recording. Highly recommended . I have vague recollections of possibly seeing a copy of the vinyl 2LP in a deletion rack for a couple of pounds many, many years ago - not sure if I have mentioned this, might have been at Mole. Maybe I'm imagining it (I'm thinking I've seen this as the brown cover is sort of familiar). If true, I could almost weep.... The Alan Skidmore is a wonderful session that is easily my favourite of the first batch of Duttons. As I think was mentioned this month in 'Jazz Review', if it had come out at the time on Blue Note, it would have caused quite a stir on the US scene. One of the very best UK late 60s/early 70s sessions, I think.

There was a whole series of these put out by UK Fontana in the 1960s. Most of them are reissues I think. I see them quite often.

What are your first impressions of the Basie and Farmer ... sets? ← In both cases - superb. I have the Basie set playing right now. Played 2 CDs of each so far and it's been a real pleasure. These are very good Mosaic sets and the Addey mastering is well up to scratch. The sound of the Basie in particular is incredible, considering the age of the recordings.
