Ahem.....no comment I can comment on the 'cardboard' Japanese CD sleeves. They are indeed a pretty exact replica of the original Fontana LPs with the flipback sleeve. My 'Mexican Green' CD is a 'mini-me' version of the Fontana LP.

I saw this CD for sale the other day and I must admit, I don't like what they have done to the cover art. I think I will hold out for a mintish LP copy when I can find one.

I wonder if they are offering overseas shipping on these? (they discontinued this with the darkroom prints).

I noticed in NYC that some branches of Barnes and Noble were stocking it. If I'd had room in my luggage I would have picked up a copy. Ah well..

Hmm. I think the eviction happened Oct 1966, from what I can gather so the LP was sent pre-eviction. Nice idea though !

I think you are correct, Jazzbo. Fred also mentioned that there was some nice sound processing done on the vinyl to make the reissue super quiet. I just wish that I had bought a copy of this when I was there to try it out.

Nice story ! Sounds like amazingly attentive customer service, considering the chaos that was no doubt impacting CME at the time. I wonder if your LPs made an appearance in that Mingus 'elephant gun' video inside one of the packed boxes ready for eviction?

With respect to the LPs, the Mole reissue is definitely inferior to the Fontana in terms of sound quality.

Interesting comments about the mono 100% Proof. I have this one on a good original Fontana mono LP and it sounds excellent to my ears. Perhaps the transfer which was done to CD was less than optimal. In any case, as long as it is around the £10 mark I'll probably pick up the stereo CD when it comes out (don't have the Japanese issue). I have no complaints re: the Jap CD issues of 'Tubbs', 'Tubbs Tours' and the two disks recorded at Ronnie Scotts.

Did you buy them by mail order Brownie or pick them up from Mr Mingus in person?

I have an original LP copy of the 'Music Written For...' 2LP set. When I spoke with Fred Cohen of the Jazz Record Center a few weeks ago he confirmed that Mingus only produced 300 copies of this. The music is great and it needs to be out on CD. Fred did a limited LP reissue of this with Sue Mingus which he sells at the JRC - taken from a mint LP original I think as the master tapes were disposed of by Capitol.

Good move, King Ubu ! I picked up both of these on Saturday and am suitably impressed. The 'Black Marigolds' has some great Joe Harriott and very varied arrangements by Garrick (I have a vinyl so no big suprises really - it's a straight reissue). The Westbrook 'Love Songs' is the definitive CD issue. Mike has swapped the single of 'Original Peter' for the original LP version and also added the single 'Magic Garden' as a bonus track (along with the original 'Original Peter' ). To my mind he is correct and the album is significantly improved as a result. A few cosmetic changes added to the original Deram sleeve art as well, nothing major. Sound of the new CD is also better than the Jap issue (and how many times can one say that..?) Have you got hold of the Skidmore and Henry Lowther yet? Anyway, end of Brit-Jazz sideline and back to the topic at hand...

Dutton Vocalion would get my current vote.

Anyone who doesn't have 'Mexican Green' should jump for that one immediately. I never much liked the sound of my old Mole Jazz LP but have recently replaced with a Fontana LP and it sounds magnificent. A cliche I know but this is probably Tubby's finest LP.

You will enjoy it. Some very nice Tubby on it, not to mention choice playing from Ian Hamer. Some of the material is very much in a jazz-rock vein too.

Great news on the Tubby Hayes front. Looks as though Universal UK are going to reissue a whole load of Tubby Hayes Fontanas this fall. Amongst the titles I know about are the following: 'Return Visit' (with Roland Kirk) 'Mexican Green' ( ) '100% Proof' 'Tubbs Tours' not sure about 'Tubbs' but I suspect it might be in there too. Looks like these will be taken from original stereo masters and not (as with the Japanese '100% Proof') from a mono source. My local Jazz dealer showed me the release paperwork from Universal so its happening, brothers ! Standby to standby with your plastic at Dusty Groove.....

Of course! Tony Hall and Alfred Lion probably had a tape exchange going as a by-product of the 'Blues In Trinity' session by Tubbs, recorded under Hall's juristiction in London. Tempo session in disguise !

I wonder if this is the Japanese vinyl issue of this set? Never heard it but my hunch is that it will be good !
