  1. I know its become an oxymoron but I still can't believe it's still in print !
  2. I just saw him the once - about 15 years ago in a club gig with Louis Hayes, sharing the front line with Charles Tolliver and Gary Bartz. What a lineup ! He was very much in his prime and that's the way I want to remember him. RIP - I'll try to dig out the very fine Enjas, 'Bushman's Song' and 'Countin' On The Blues', tonight.
  3. That's sad news. Michelot was a class act - I like his work with Miles Davis on 'Acenseur' and also the mid-sized group 50s sessions under his own name. RIP.
  4. Viewer discretion required for certain areas of this site !
  5. I think I read somewhere that Mingus's knowledge of the classics was encyclopaedic. Now spining: 'VSOP Mercury' box set - the Cannonball Adderley and Quincy Jones sides 'Bethelehem's Best' (Bethlehem Records 3LP box set sampler with mainly mid 50s sessions - Shavers, Mariano, Chris Connor, Pettiford etc)
  6. Minnie Caldwell Minnie the Minx Dennis The Menace
  7. Taiwanese Fontana?
  8. I saw a copy of the Charcoal Sketches in NYC (it was the bit about the 'Industrial North' that caught my attention). It might have been at the Downtown Music Gallery. Never heard anything by Basil Kirchin but this has got me curious. That's very sad that he passed away just last week.
  9. Koo Stark Prince Andrew ( ) Prince
  10. His seller name sure is appropriate !
  11. He's also on the wonderful 'Cleopatra's Needle' by Ronnie Ross (Fontana), rare late 60s session way overdue for CD issue.
  12. Same here, but my curiosity is arroused. Damn, will have to filter on 'Freddie Slack'.
  13. Bought this set from Mosaic recently and it wasn't even on my radar ! Very glad I did - it's one of their unheralded gems. Just working my way through disks 7-9. Very fine arrangements from Bill Holman and Russ Garcia on the disk 7 and Anita is truly a class act. Beautifully re-mastered by Malcolm Addey. How can you go wrong?
  14. Gordon Haskell General Gordon General George Patton
  15. Saw most of the Hyde Park thing on TV. Madonna put on a good show and got the crowd worked up and the Floyd were worth checking out, with the unlikely sight of Roger Waters back in the lineup. McCartney wrapped things up nicely. Not particularly my scene on the whole but seemed to be a good show.
  16. Hopefully 'Jazz In Britain 68-69' gets a re-release either through Dutton Vovalion or 'Impressed Repressed'. That one is very long OOP, I don't think it's ever been re-issued as an LP after the early 70s original and certainly not as a CD. Very much anticipated. 'Around 6' is very highly recommended. Great band with Parker and strong sense of purpose to this album. The 'Azimuth' albums seem to get a mixed reaction (particularly 'Azimuth 85' but I like them (Wheeler and Winstone are always great to see live). ECM did a 3CD set of their stuff some time ago but I'm not sure if it is still in print.
  17. The Complete Verve/Clef Anita O'Day set. Disk VII with the Bill Holman arrangements and orchestra. Wow !
  18. Recently picked up a DVD with this documentary of Sonny Simmons (Brandon Evans, 110 minutes, Cathode Films). Have yet to check it out. Anyone else have this and have any opinions on it?
  19. Monty Budwig Conrad Herwig Zelig
  20. John Coltrane 'Live In Seattle' (Impulse 2LP red/black label). Yikes - grunge started here . Time to hit the pit methinks...
  21. That's very sad - much too young. Unfortunately, looks like his close relatives were also very short-lived.
  22. The Liberty vinyl of that one is absolutely outstanding.
  23. Great album - Muhal cooks on that one. Currently spinning: Wayne Shorter 'Adams Apple' (BN blue label Liberty - wow, sounds great) Donald Byrd 'Fancy Free' (BN Liberty) Kenny Cox 'Multidirection' (BN Liberty, needs to be reissued on CD )
  24. Don't know that particular Linn power amp but the Linn amps I have heard have had impressively tight musical reproduction. I find the same thing with Naim with regard to customer service here in the UK. When I give them a call they are able to check up the full service history on all my kit - particularly useful for the Hi-Cap obtained second-hand. The fact that they are 20 miles down the road in Salisbury also helps ! Both Linn and Naim seem to attract very loyal customer bases.
