  1. Stacks of great stuff over the past few days: Many of the Uptown LPs including Dameronia, JR Monterose and Wess/Coles All of the Philly Joe Jones Galaxies Stack of great Prestige and Milestone twofers Japanese King, Atlas and Toshiba West Coast LPs including Shelly Manne, Rumsey's All Stars, Art Pepper, Toshiko etc. Sadly part of a shop closing-down sale..
  2. I caught him live just the once - with a Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, late in life. I know that he made a notable impression over here in the UK when he toured with Gillespie, Stitt, Monk and Blakey as part of that 'Giants of Jazz' package. Indeed a giant..
  3. I was playing disk one of the Anita O'Day this morning and was again astonished at the very high level of the performances. This is one heck of a set; for anyone into vocals and West Coast Jazz in general, don't miss it.
  4. Re: Jimmy Rowser. He's on that DVD of the Les McCann Trio In Concert that Rhapsody have issued with the Sonny Criss All Stars.
  5. Yes - and a brief glimpse of Joe Zawinul too. Great movie all round..
  6. Tod Coolman Ornette Coleman Old King Cole
  7. There's also that appearance by Tubby Hayes' group in the 60s Hammer Horror movie 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors'. I really must get hold of that one. Another favourite is the movie 'Kes' by Ken Loach - low budget 60s British movie. That one has a very nice soundtrack by John Cameron with appearances by Harold McNair on flute and also Ronnie Ross. Nice movie too, which captures the Northern grittiness of the era very well.
  8. Just picked up a few OJC LPs. The Red Rodney 'Modern Music From Chicago', the Elmo Hope 'Meditations' and the Sleet 'All Members'. Have also hit upon a motherlode of 1970s Prestige and Milestone twofer sets (most of the Dolphys, Stitt, Parker, Mulligan/Baker, Oliver Nelson etc) and this is a very good way for the vinyl enthusiast to pick up much of the material captured in the OJCs in good sound.
  9. There's lots of good jazz in the Clint Eastwood film 'Play Misty for Me'. At one point though there's some moody orchestral background music that sounds suspiciously like the Gerald Wilson Orchestra (it's the voicings used that make me think this). I think the scene is the one where he returns to his oceanfront home at night from the radio station and the psycho lady is waiting for him. Gerald or not, its a very nice bid of film jazz.
  10. 'Patato' Valdes Chucho Valdes Fidel Castro
  11. My sincere condolences at this time.
  12. Don Sleet 'All Members' (OJC) Manny Albam etc 'Something New, Something Blue' (Fresh Sounds)
  13. Very sad news. One of those guys who you assume is always with us. Sadly no more, RIP.
  14. Love those UK Vogue doubles. That Johnny Richards is very good, particularly the 'Diablo' session. Particular favourites from this series are the various volumes of 'West Coast Scene', the Stan Getz/Johnny Smith, the Harry Edison 'Sweet Tracks' and the various Roulette Basies. The John Handy 'In The Vernacular' still seems to elude me though.
  15. Jimmy Forrest 'Black Forrest' (Delmark) With Grant Green and Elvin Jones Cannonball Adderley 'Spontaneous Combustion' (Savoy 2LP set)
  16. Once again, this looks unmissable !
  17. John Coltrane 'The Stardust Session' (Prestige 2LP set)
  18. Thank the Lord Phil Seamen wasn't on drums is all I can say..
  19. Make sure you post your thoughts after the set is OOP
  20. George Coleman Octet 'Big George' (Affinity). Brings back good memories of seeing these guys back in the day.
  21. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this set (not that I am going to pull the trigger or anything.. )
  22. Looks like the Man himself must be on holiday today !
  23. Several of the 'Frankly Jazz' show tunes are included on the very fine 'Katanga!' session, which is included in the Select. The show was, I believe, sponsored by Dick Bock of PC and during each episode they publicise the then-current product of the artist featured. The Amy/Bolton had a quick feature on 'Katanga' I believe and the Jazz Crusaders show featured 'Freedom Sound'.
  24. Got this one from one of the CD clubs when it originally came out and on the whole it's a . Good reminder for me to dig it out again.
  25. That probably means 2 days..
