Quick post-return update. I made the 'bash' on the Friday morning. Scott of Mosaic was there with a nice stall selling 'promo' Mosaics at 20% discount and some regular sets (including Selects) at 10% discount. There was also a nice selection of partial OOP sets at $5 per CD. Most of the stalls were dealers of 78s and it looked to be 'de rigeur' to bring along your portable turntable to check out the shellac before purchase. Some amazing stuff by the look of it but not really my particular scene. Joe from Euclid was also there with several boxes of modern jazz goodies from his store. Chatting with Scott he confirmed that Mosaic are looking to bring out a 1-LP 'set' of this new Coltrane/Monk material, to coincide with a forthcoming CD ( ). By all accounts it would also seem that the late 'run' of sales on the Byrd /Adams set also took everyone by suprise up in Stamford. As for the journey, the drive in the pimpmobile was quite 'exciting'.

Listened to most of that Elmo show en route to Newark yesterday. It included an interview with Bertha Hope, who gave some fascinating and very erudite insights into the circumstances of the music. Bertha also did a very nice gig at the Marriott Brooklyn (solo and quartet) on Friday night which I was fortunate to catch (quartet - Bertha Hope, Roni Ben-Hur, Walter Booker, Leroy Williams). Too bad that there wasn't better attendance from the NYC area though. Of particular note - that radio show also included an excerpt from one of Bertha's tapes of a club gig Elmo did back in 1958 in Vancouver with Harold Land, Scott LaFaro and Clifford Jarvis.

Some good stuff in Academy today (first thing I saw was a Grachan Moncur 'Evolution' mono original for $20 - not mint but not bad at all) but my reaction in Jazz Record Center was . We have nothing in the UK that even compares with this. Scored two Tal Farlow mint Norgrans (incredible), a Japanese Mercury box with the Brownie EP, a Ken McIntyre United Artists 'Way Way Out' and a few other items such as Gerald Wilson's 'Eternal Equinox'. That place is unbelievable - the jazz equivalent of a candy store. You could lose a week or three in there.

I hope to be there Friday morning. I'll be driving a 5 litre Mustang pimpmobile so I have the wheels to get to the location..

Great that they are bringing the Lonnie Smith out. That one is quite difficult to find. Strange decision about 'Reach Out' though, as its not long ago since the last mid-price reissue of this one. Why is Hutcherson's 'Inner Glow' still languishing in limbo land?

I saw the 'Miles Davis Story' when it was originally broadcast by UK Channel 4 TV and have bought the DVD. On the whole I think it is the best all-round documentary of Miles' life and work and is very good at covering, with little bias, the various periods of Miles' career. Ian Carr had a major input to this documentary. Element of hero-worship - yes - but also great insight at times. He's also very open to the music recorded late in Miles' career. Love that bit of film where Miles is doodling away on that sketch pad and doing his best to ignore the fawning interviewer (Jools Holland on 'The Tube', I think).

The '4 Men With Beards' Black Rhythmn Happening is a good one. Nice remastering and much improved sleeve with great notes (by Eddie) and gatefold cover.

Wow... I'm actually in Brooklyn in a couple of days time and would have most definitely taken you up on this but I'm not sure I could fit it into the B757 aircraft hold. Very nice unit !

Wasn't this one of the LPs that was released around the time of the NY USA to Liberty transition? Most of the copies I have seen are Liberty pressings but occasionally you come across the NY USA.

Really? I think I paid about $20-25 for a pretty good copy (of the original stereo, not the mono).

For fans of early 60s Brit jazz hard bop, this one is strongly recommended: Graham Bond (on alto) is on fire and Don Rendell puts in his usual exemplary performance. Cooking rythmn section too. Session is an unusual one - recorded for the US Jazzland label in London. I heard that Bond was making so much vibration tapping his feet during the recording that the engineers had to get him to take his shoes off. Available in the US through the Bards..

A good friend of mine listened to it once, threw it out in disgust and has refused to listen to MW's music ever since ! Can't believe its that bad..

I was in the Bath shop today and noticed the 'Art Wolf' was in there ( ). My job-lot order of Vocalions has been held up slightly owing to the release of the Westbrook so I've added that to the bundle (that'll make 3 of 'Love Songs' including the vinyl ( ) but must have the 'Magic Garden'.
