On a jazz-related note, I've read that British tenorist Ronnie Scott was friendly with Robert Graves and he and his ex-wife used to stay with Graves in Majorca (think that's where Graves' house was) back in the 1960s.

Did Melba do the horn arrangements for Freddie Hobbard's 'Hub Cap'? Those arrangements are awesome and sound very much like her style with the close, subtle harmonies. There's a picture of her on the LP in the studio at this session with Randy Weston so looks as if this is a strong possibility.

Sadly, I suspect bottom line economics is behind a lot of what is now happening at Ronnie's. £25 admission is outrageous and the new membership fees look stratospheric as well. Ronnie always gave musicians union members and students a price break mid-week, a gesture which was much appreciated by many. The last straw for me though has been to take the 'Jazz at Ronnie Scotts' magazine archive off-line before everyone had chance to download copies ! Talking of Keith Tippett - at least the Bath Fest had the good sense to present this most important musician this year in the splendor of the Georgian Guildhall.

No problem ! I always thought that it this punchy start was quite deliberate and done for effect (the LP I have is a white label Contemporary). Really like that opening track !

I believe Mobley did several weeks of residency at the club and also sorted out accomodation and other UK gigs for Hank. In fact Ronnie Scott has a huge Mobley fan (I've read that he owned many Mobley BN vinyl originals) and his own style of playing was very strongly influenced by Hank.

Starts straight away into the theme with Simmons and Donald in unison on the original LP. Quite abrupt.

But why have they taken away the archive of 'Jazz at Ronnie Scots' magazine from their website? That was a useful resource. Used to be free but now you have to pay a fortune for it. Sign of the times..

It was originally broadcast on BBC TV back in the 1970s - a classic. Still one of the best things the BBC has ever done with a masterful performance by Derek Jacobi. The series was really a series of plays - hence the lack of any action/battle scenes. Quite a lavish budget for the times though, as I remember. I must buy the DVDs for this one. Also the George Smiley stuff..

I've told this story prevously in the BNBB but to put into context just how low-key Joe was in the early 80s on a visit I made to Germany to see friends I was taking a look at a high-school magazine brought home by one of the family and there was an advert for a school concert by Joe Henderson for something like 5 DM admission ! This was a school in a very rural/low key place too. I'll bet it was totally brilliant - of course it had already been and gone by the time I saw the mag. My reaction at the time was one of total and utter amazement. He was still pretty well unknown by the public at large when I saw him in Toronto back around 1990. Never forget that incredibly 'foggy' sound he got on 'Recorda Me' from his old Selmer. By then though I think the word was just starting to spread.
