  1. Dexter Gordon 'A Swingin' Affair' (BN NY USA mono) John Cameron 'Cover Lover' (UK Columbia stereo). With Ronnie Ross and lots of Cameron vocals in an 'Anthony Newley' vein. Prince Lasha 'Firebirds Live Vol 2' (Birdseye)
  2. Great Dexter Gordon Blue Note vinyl on deck but the lively soccer action on screen (sans sound) is proving to be a distraction !
  3. Phenomenal ! Don't miss..
  4. Just got hold of a black label deepgroove copy of 'The Word From Bird' so it will be interesting playing these two great LPs back to back today.
  5. Wow - incredible ! Thanks for posting.
  6. Grant Green 'Carryin' On' (BN Liberty stereo) Joe Henderson 'Page One' (BN NY USA mono)
  7. IT MOOST BE TIME TOO GIVE THIS WUN A SPIN (An overlooked gem IMO)
  8. BN 4191 mono original being pulled out for a spin tonight. Great session - one of my favourites. Side 1 in particular is knockout.
  9. Not to worry, John. My archive of complete 60's 'Jazz Monthly's' is useful in such circumstances. In October's edition under 'coming events' it says: 'Jazz Expo '69 ''' October 27th 8pm. 'Guitar Workshop' with Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Grant Green etc. Newport All-Stars featuring Ruby Braff, Red Norvo etc., Dakota Staton. Sarah Vaughan and Maynard were featured on the 25th Oct. Hamp was featured on the 26th with Red Norvo and Gary Burton and that gig also had The Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. October 28th had Louis Jordan, Bill Coleman and Albert Nicholas. Oct 29th had Hamp, Teddy Wilson and Ben Webster. October 30th had Albert King, Otis Spann, John Lee Hooker and Champion Jack Dupree, Monk and Cecil Taylor were featured on October 31st and Miles, Mary Lou Williams and John Hendricks were featured on 1st Nov. Venue for all of the above was the venerable Hammersmith, Odeon. (in fact this was Miles last UK appearance until 1982, when he was back at Hammersmith (remember it well ).
  10. egads ! already up to 3 bids..
  11. Damn - this is just sad news. I knew the place as the 'Cafe des Copains' during my time in the city and always though that it was perfect of its type, as a small intimate venue. Great music, generally appreciative audiences and very nice food, as I recall. Extremely civilised ! Probably my favourite evening in there was one time it was full up and got to stand with my beer smack bang next to John Lewis as he did his mini-suite 'Paris' tribute. Incredible ! The memory recalls great evenings listening to Pat LaBarbara, Jay McShann, Sir Charles Thompson, Joanne Brackeen.... (sigh)
  12. The DeJohnette/Scofield/Goldings group is on at North Sea on Saturday night next week - look forward to checking it out (haven't yet heard the CDs).
  13. That's still one of the best box sets out there. Not a dull moment on it and superbly compiled by 'Boxman' Koyama.
  14. 'Red Garland's Piano' (Prestige Bergenfield)
  15. PM sent on the Dizzy Reece and Davis 'Seven Steps' !
  16. Good question. My guess is that this would have originally been issued in the UK on Fontana (an imprint of Philips), as UK CBS didn't start operating until around 1965/66. Certainly, this is the case with 'Miles Ahead' and 'Porgy and Bess'.
  17. There sure is ! Big Miller was very much loved on the Edmonton scene.
  18. Related to Brooke Shields?
  19. Italy were very unlucky not to score with those two post hits very early on in extra time. That would have sewn it up.
  20. What a fine game ! Two very well matched sides but Italy just had that extra 'magic ingredient X' and created two wonderful goals in the very last minutes. Sorry for Germany - Klinsmann very sporting in applauding the winning goal. I guess the meltdown today in the Italian League will go on the back burner after this result !
  21. Thanks - yes, seen it. Have met Martino on a couple of occasions and have found him to be an extremely courteous and thoughtful guy. Incidentally, of all the acts in the line up for this Fest, it is Yusef Lateef with the Belmondos that fires me up the most by far. I've gone all these years without ever seeing Yusef live and it's great that he's putting in an appearance here at North Sea (not sure if there are any other European dates planned).
  22. Yep, I'd deduced that - but what a shame to have to pass on the Martino !
  23. Splendid ! Still to book my flight but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. My first North Sea too (hopefully). Can't beat the lineup at this Fest. Dillemas galore - should one go and see Yusef Lateef or (at same time) the Pat Martino Quartet?
