  1. Let the discussions begin. Most of the tracks are well known standards. So people should not have that much problems identifying them. I'm more interested in identifying the musicians. For the tracks with big bands, I don't expect someone to know who the third trumpet player is, just who are the soloists. Hope you all enjoy.
  2. 1 For Clarinet And String Quartet (Ned Rothenberg) Adagio For Strings (Charlie Haden) Heart Strings (Pat Martino) Four String Drive (Mike Clark) Apron Strings (Beady Belle) Next up: Bird
  3. Last week WKCR did an artists profile on Derek Bailey. I listened to the three hour program. The program played a number of pieces by his group "Company." What am I missing? I really was not impressed with his playing on any of these recordings. Nothing against free jazz or Derek Bailey. I do go and listen to free jazz live and do like it, but I didn't find anything innovative in the music played on the WKCR program. Anyone have some suggestions of what I should give a listen too from him? His long career and playing with so many great musicians leads me to believe he merits a second listen.
  4. Beautiful sound. I sure hope he doesn't lose that. It's one of the best. I also like his harmonic ideas. I don't always go for tenor players running chords and I think George does more than that. He's a thinker. Sometimes working things out somewhat is a viable approach. With that approach when one is inspired there are options. He was pretty inspired IMO on his solo on Dolphin Dance. Very well worth studying. You also can tell a guy's good when he's exposed, and on the duet record he made with---I think---Tete Montelu (sp?) he's right out there and it holds up beautifully. I remember a wise statement by Eddie Harris in a radio interview. He said something like 'you wanna hear where a tenor player's really at? Pan down the rhythm section and see if you still can pat your foot to him.' The last two time I did see him, which was after the gig I first mentioned, he sounded great.
  5. Big Bill Broonzy. I didn't not get this. I listen to Mississippi Delta blues and I know him. But I must say I don't have that recording.
  6. Sweat Hogs John Travolta Tony Manero
  7. Corrected. I guess I was overly exciting about your upcoming BFT. Yes - our own Johnny E did a west coast tour with them in December. They played Bellingham, Washington, where my wife has relatives, about a week and a half before I was out there. I may have cursed a little. For a moment I thought you knew all the answers to my BFT. I thought, damn, it was that easy, we haven't even started.
  8. I never heard of The Tipton Saxophone Quartet. If they are ever playing in NYC I will try to catch them. Is it safe to say they are still together?

  24. As was the case with the Panorama Jazz Band, this artist wasn't chosen for this BFT in order to stump folks by picking someone hopelessly obscure. I picked this track because I think that this album is a minor masterpiece, and nobody seems to know it. Hopefully, at least a few people might check out the Panorama and this guy's Pacific Jazz album after this BFT. I do plan on buying Panorama Jazz Band's CD(s). I really liked what I heard from their website.
