Sandusky Investigation Findings
Tim McG replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Dipping my toe into poisoned waters again, but Sandusky arguably was nuts to some significant degree, while Paterno and the other enablers didn't have that excuse (if excuse it is). They were -- seemingly cold-bloodly, rationally -- playing the game to their own personal and institutional advantage, probably thinking, "Don't bother me with this s---t, I've got a good thing going here." If I were Dante, they'd be in a lower circle of Hell than Sandusky. Where I completely understand the disgust with those who chose to turn a blind eye, there is nothing on this or any other planet worse than a Sandusky who victimizes innocent children. The enablers are one thing, but the actual act is far worse and more damaging to a kid who endures it day after endless day. Hell would be too good a place for the likes of Sandusky. I take your point about the direct damage done, but what about my point about the difference between deeds done as a result, arguably, of madness of some sort and deeds done coldbloodedy, in the service of "rational" self-interest? The former deeds, again arguably, the perpetrator could not really check himself because he did not see them as reprehensible but through some cracked lens that either turned black into white or because he took twisted satisfaction in the blackness. The latter deeds, however, could have been checked as readily as, say, a particular investment strategy could be, but the perpertators chose consciously and (so it would seem) coolly not to do that. They knew right from wrong and chose to do wrong, having carefully weighed the consequences (see some of the memos in the Freeh report). The Sanduskys of this world, I think, weigh only means of seduction/assault and means of evading detection; they are as little moral actors as rats would be. Agreed. Enablers should most certainly shoulder much of the blame in a child abuse case. However, and this is not meant to excuse that sort of cold, callous inaction, the ultimate decision to abuse a child lies directly at the feet of the perpetrator. Paterno played a role, but I honestly do think people are foisting far too much blame on his head than is realisticaly justified. IMHO, it would be comparable to blaming the gun for a bullet wound; somebody had to pull the trigger, yes? That is the one who should be vilified the most....whether or not they can help themselves is, in fact, open to debate. Sandusky knew right from wrong, too. Why else would he threaten his victims if they ratted him out? It doesn't excuse enablers, but they are that for a variety of reasons and often, weighing the consequences isn't the controlling factor. More often, as we saw at Penn State, self-preservation is. In families it is even more embedded if not wholly heinous and wicked. Bottom line is the kid suffers regardless. -

Cliff reads this forum. He knows he owes you. Speaking of Lee's "many places I've been," any chance you want Justin Smoak back? The Rangers appear to be doing just fine without Cliff Lee. Interesting HR derby in the Giants vs. Phillies game [where even the starting pitchers each jacked one] yesterday...won on a bunt by Blanco. Go figure.

Um...Guys? Sandusky was the pedophile. Paterno was a part of the cover-up after the authorities dropped charges in 1998. To what degree, will be surely found out in the trials of Curley and Schultz. Not the same thing as mass murdering scum as Pete alluded. -

Oh c'mon. Mass murdering despots are not even on par with the likes of a Joe Paterno. -
Maybe it has more to do with that stupid "chop" tune the PA plays every 20 seconds. Seriously. Do they really have to play that song so often? Geez, it gets annoying. Apparently, the stadium "music director" only has three active braincells and/or the memory span of a gnat. No wonder nobody shows up to the games. In the meantime, Santiago Casilla needs to go down to Fresno AAA. I mean, he's blown 5-6 save opportunities and has an abysmal 10.75 ERA. I dunno. The Phillies would be a close second. I still can't believe they lost to the Dodgers yesterday; bad relief coupled with bone head mistakes blew it for them after a very nice come back courtesy the hitters. Wow, the chop drives former braves players that were fat, & unproductive, into insufferable assholes when they come to town? I didn't know that! Will have to see what happens the next time a guy like that comes to the Ted! Well...he has certainly blossomed into a very good All-Star MVP player since leaving Chop-lanta. Coincidence? I think not If the Mets had an average bullpen, not even a good one, they'd have 6-7 more wins, possibly more. Sure would have been nice if they showed up last night vs. the Dodgers.

Heat's starting back up here...and humid thanks to that tropical storm off Baja California. Ugh.

This is egregious, no doubt....but that would be punishing the wrong people. It seems to me, since Curley and Schultz are not strictly football overseers, the NCAA should give the entire Penn State sports program the death penalty if that's how they feel about it. Why stop there? Maybe the NCAA should punish any team which has played against Penn State. Punish all coaching friends of Paterno, as well. Hell, let's nail that stupid Nitany Lion mascot too, while we're at it. Here's to the NCAA looking through the wrong end of the telescope. -
Tell your son that the Giants had the very same poblems in the 1990s and early 2000s. I still have a twitch in my eye because of Felix Rodriguez, Tyler Walker and [Grrrr ] Armando Benitez. It could be worse. I also remember 1986 [and 1982] when the Angels should have gone to the WS if not for Gene "Can't win the big one and I'll prove it to you" Mauch. And I know he's not a reliever, but don't even get me started on Barry Zito. This, too, shall pass

I stand corrected: Happily the Giants won and if not for a Sanchez throwing error, Lincecum could have gotten the win. From what I read sounded like he had a great game. I agree. Here's hoping that will continue.

Where I steadfastly agree with this, I also must state that as a person who waited until the Freeh investigation was done, I saw evidence that Paterno was, in fact, a part of the hush-hush, wink-and-a-nod silencing of the facts. Which, in direct correlation, enables Sandusky to continue abusing kids. I, too, would like to know why the authorities didn't nail Sandusky back in 1998. I'm willing to bet the ranch Shultz and Curley had plenty to do with that one. The only thing I believe the Freeh report stretched the limits of fact finding is the statement of Sandusky being in the office a few steps away from Paterno's office. The supposition was he could have confronted him. That's not evidence, it's opinion. It is too easy to say a person should do this or that unless they have had to do it themselves. That doesn't excuse Paterno for his inaction, but it is not an easy thing to do by any stretch of the imagination. Nevertheless, the old adage holds true here: If there is that much smoke there has to be a fire. Paterno was, indeed, part of the cover up. To what degree will be discovered in the eventual trials of Schultz and Curley, I am certain. -
Poncho Sanchez got called out a few weeks ago for doing the same thing. Hopefully, this isn't the beginning of a trend.

Mr. Radio Dude, EVERY comment that has been made here is pertinent to the Sandusky case. Broaden your mind and maybe you'll see that. In the meantime, if you don't like what you read, move along. It's really that simple. Or, here's an idea, make a well-thought out, meaningful contribution. Better yet, make one at the PSU board. I'm sure you'll find many like-minded people there. Tiddly-Winks Team Captain Exactly, JetMan. Some people here just don't get it. Mike comes from a BBS which encourages verbal clutter and mental vagrancy. Well put, my friend. Mr. Hijacking busy at work!! That other BBS is the one at which you've been banned for life, right? And at your behest, Mike. Here, you actually have to tolerate opposing views, not insult them. I left on my own terms by waving bye-bye with my verbal knuckles knowing full well what would happen. Best decision I ever made on the Web. Now stay on topic. -

Thanks, Dan. For the record, I never was defending Paterno. I was, however, attempting to focus on the difficulties in gaining a conviction of a pedophile, the manner in which that must be done and, at the time, with no tanigble evidence to accuse Paterno of anything beyond what some folks here think one man can do when the authorities dropped the charges. . Now that the Freeh Inquiry is out and with tangible evidence linking Paterno to the cover up, I am convinced he was a part of the whole thing. You see, I don't make assumptions about anything or anybody without proof and because I don't some folks here [including the interlopers from another BBS] took that to mean I was this "ardent supporter" which I am not. Never have been. I mean, geez...I'm a Native Californian. Why in the hell would I even care about Big 10 football? I do, however, care very deeply about students and the victims of child abuse. And if that's my crime, then you can hang my butt from the nearest flagpole. Clearly the *record* shows you defended Paterno to the hilt while mounting evidence of the types of discoveries the report announced have been lining up like waves. Anyone can see it at another BBS under "Goodbye Joepa" thread if one wants to kill some time. This is not about you and your deep care of students, and so far as interlopers, did someone around here appoint you greeter? HA-HA!! Where are the mods when you need them? I have a right to be here like everybody else, except for this guy's harassing and challenging my participation here. And you also have the right to be wrong...again. Hijacking this thread in an effort to turn it into a pissing contest speaks volumes on your intent, Mike. Where, indeed, are the Mods when you need them? -

Interesting, Mike. Tell me, could you also "give a crap" about about lies you spread about me relative to what I actually say on this BBS? The conversation was on topic and completly relative to the discussion regarding a corrupt athletic system which allows for cover-ups and abuses in an effort to save the program. Man up, Mike. You got a problem with me send me a PM and we'll talk, OK? -

The only money losers would be the ones that receive no revenue from TV contracts and/or make no bowl appearances. Even that would be a stretch. And those wouldn't even lose money if they cut down on the free rides. There is no community outreach reasoning in the big 4 states (PA, FL, TX and CA) which produce most of the professional football player population! Funny thing -- my Division 4 school had absolutely no problem attracting students without even so much as a hint of athletic glory! My Division I school had a helluva time attracting students who were athletes; they had to compete with the likes of USC and UCLA, but I get your point. My campus was/is the 2nd largest in California, but largely due to the fact, like San Diego State, it is a commuter school. As to community out reach, it is still very important if you want donors to give to the college and the city to support it. The good news is they have a good basketball and baseball team so that offers students that something to do when not hitting the books. That being said, I would hazard to guess that the LaCross, wrestling, H2O polo, volleyball, tennis, cross-country or softball teams struggle mightily with regard to gate receipts; thus lose money.
