With Mingus he was a young up and comer (maybe 18), a shadow of the monster he'd become.

Door of the Cage and Marionettes on a High Wire are both brilliant Carroll albums. Erica Lindsay is excellent on those. I think of them more in the Miles 2nd quintet vein rather than Lee Morganish.
I know the feeling. I've enjoyed his alto playing more than his tenor playing, but I'm no fan. If I want to hear someone blowing his brains out I'll stick with Pharoah Sanders at his most extreme.
I grew up watching Zero Hour on late night TV. It was one of those films in regular rotation. I think it's that one and another film that were the main inspirations for Airplane. I'd say Airplane is very much in the Mel Brooks mode.
